[android-developers] Re: Incoming Emails - Incoming SMS - What is the way to catch them?

2008-12-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There is a fundamental difference between the two... to get notified
of an incoming email you either have to make periodic calls to an
email server or you need to develop a pseudo-push technique... as to
the latter read through here:

[android-developers] Re: Receiving SMS Messages in 1.0?

2008-12-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Cristina,
First off, thanks for the code, I have been looking everywhere for
this and was annoyed to only find references to code from the outdated
SDK's.
Just a couple of questions for you. I'm trying to implement your code
above and was wondering what permissions need to be added to the
manifest file. Also, I'm still fairly new to this, is there a way to
send binary SMS's to the emulator through either DDMS or a command
line? My app will intercept and handle small binary files sent via
SMS from non android devices. I have the binary files, and would
prefer not to write another android app and set up a new emulator just
to be able to send the files via SMS.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Chris

 Can you provide the code you use to send de binarySMSand to receive

[android-developers] Looking for Talented Developers

2008-12-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tenth Muse Enterprises is in search of developers with experience in
Android and with the ability to expand our ideas to other platforms.
Currently we have 2 projects (Perseus and Proteus) that are in need of
talented software engineers, one a relatively simple but impactful
product that will utilize GPS and will need to have web or server
based data that is submitted by an end user, and relayed to other end
users.  Very simple.

The other project (Proteus) is much more detailed and in depth and the
details cannot be discussed at all here due to US patent laws, however
I promise that this is a highly ambitious idea that will change the
way mobile devices are used forever.

Please understand that anyone looking to participate in either project
must be willing to sign a strict confidentiality agreement before any
information can be shared, or negotiations for contracted work can
begin.

If you are interested in being a part of these exciting projects,
please send your resume and examples or links to your past work to

[android-developers] Re: Overriding Contacts View

2008-12-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

Wow that was quick - thanks.

I know this is the intent.

Here is what I did:
-
I have added it to my manifest XML -

receiver android:name=CallButtonIntentReceiver
intent-filter
action
android:name=android.intent.action.CALL_BUTTON/
/intent-filter
/receiver

-
Then created a class called 'CallButtonIntentReceiver' -

public class CallButtonIntentReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver {

private static final String ACTION =
android.intent.action.CALL_BUTTON;

@Override
public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
Intent newIntent = new Intent
(android.intent.action.MY_INTENT);
context.startActivity(newIntent);
}
}

-
and in my main activity:

private final BroadcastReceiver mCallButtonIntentReceiver = new
CallButtonIntentReceiver();

private void registerIntentReceivers() {
IntentFilter filter = new IntentFilter
(android.intent.action.CALL_BUTTON);
Intent intnt = registerReceiver(mCallButtonIntentReceiver,
filter);
}

calling 'registerIntentReceivers' from OnCreate.

--

While this compiles and runs - intnt in 'registerIntentReceivers'
above returns null
when run, and nothing happens when I press the GREEN (CALL) button on
my emulator.

Am I doing anything wrong ?
Do I need to ask for any specific permission ?

TIA

[android-developers] Iptables

2008-12-02 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I'm trying to develop a firewall for Android using the sdk, and I
understand the only way to do so using java and without modifying
Android itself is through iptables. There are some old comments in
this group that claim that iptables is no included in Android, but
after the release of the code, I checked and iptables is included
among the projects used in Andoid (maybe it has been a latter
addition). Therefore I assume that it can be used in Android.

My code tries to execute commands using a java Process, and so far it
seems to work,since I've been able to do an ls, for example. But
when I use iptables I don't receive any result(after trying to block
all traffic I can still use the browser), or any error on the outputs
(I've checke both standard and error output). I don't know if that's
caused because I'm not using the command correctly, or because of a
lack of permissions, or because of the absence of iptables among
Android commands.

Does anyone have an idea about the reason for this? (I mean, if
someone knows for sure that iptables is not included, or that is
included but can only be used as an administrator, or any other reason
that is clearly preventing this from working...if there's no apparent
reason for it not to work, then I'll asume it's an error on my code or
in the command I'm trying to execute)

The commands I'm trying to use are:

iptables -F
iptables -X
iptables -Z
iptables -t nat -F

iptables -P INPUT DROP
iptables -P OUTPUT DROP

in order to block all traffic, and therefore see if it's working or
not in an easy way.

Thank you for your help

[android-developers] Android Email Notification

2008-12-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Having read several times the topic on Push Notification Techniques
bellow, I still wonder how the current email notification technique on
android works?!

http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/4778a4e2ed9d49e1/261238ee9cee7859?lnk=gstq=push+notification#261238ee9cee7859

Isn't that technique also periodically utilising the radio just as the
techniques suggested in the post above? I wonder how many hours of
headache would be saved if IPv6 was out there.

Thanks.

[android-developers] Re: Java App UI / Engine C split query

DigitalAirways ( www.digitalairways.com ) use a kind of software
bridge allowing all the Kaleido applications (that are mainly in C/C+

I suppose that you can get in touch with them to get more information.

 If I re-write the entire thing in Java that will take a long time and
 also I would be worried about performance issues with everything
 running in the JVM.

 So if I split it so that the UI is in Java and the engine is in C what
 are the available mechanism(s) for making the C API available to the
 Java application?
 How would I debug this i.e. if I run the Java app in Eclipse how can I
 step into the C code?

 Are there other options?

[android-developers] Returning to my application after a call ends

[android-developers] Can I interfere when a call is initiated (to reformat the number)

Hi,

From my app I start the ACTION_VIEW intent on a contact record, to
allow the user to select a phone number he/she wants to call or SMS.

But - I want to know what number he/she selected. Can I somehow get a
callback on this ?

Or do I have to implement things myself - draw my own screen with all
the contact details, so I can detect the user selecting a phone
field ?

TIA

[android-developers] Android, A Programmer's Guide by Jerome (J.F.) DiMarzio

2008-11-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I bought this book in hopes of learning how to code in Android. It
was very good up to the eigth chapter when everything seemed to go
haywire. None of the intents or actions seem to be available. This
actually started a few chapters earlier and I was able to find the
current equivalents.

But now, by chapter 8, it has become unbearable. Basically, the book
is so out of date and is essentially useless.

Does anyone know of a website where I can get a beginner's tutorial on
developing Android apps?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

[android-developers] Populate ListView from a new thread

2008-11-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I have been stuggling with that one for a while now. I'm sure there is
some built-in mechanism in Android for what I'm trying to achieve,
however, I couldn't find it.

Basically, I have an activity that displays a few views, one of them
being a ListView. To populate the ListView I need to call a web
service, it usually takes about 2 secs for the server to return the
response. Hence, by the time the response comes back, and the
application parses it, the complier throws a NullPointerException in
the adapter class for the ListView.

Could you advice me on a good practice of how to accomplish that?

Thanks,
Yav

[android-developers] Re: Create Thread notation question

2008-11-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes, you use threads in one of the following ways:

1) Implement Runnable
2) Use Thread class (which also implements Runanble)

In this case you have an example of 2 with an inner class.

 Is this an inner class or a inline method definition? I have never seen a
 Thread
 defined in this way before...

[android-developers] Can I play a sound file with deafult UI ?

cases application should create its own UI to interact with user

will start deafult player for appropriate type of file. I found
following note :Using the multimedia capabilities is fairly
straightforward, going through the same intents and activities
mechanism that the rest of Android uses. from here

   BtnCont.setOnClickListener(this);

   BtnSts = (Button) this.findViewById(R.id.BtnSts);
   BtnSts.setOnClickListener(this);

   }
public void onClick(View v) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
if(v.getId()==R.id.BtnMsj){
Log.d(menuOnClick1, ifMsj);
Intent i = new Intent(main.this, mensajes.class);
Bundle b = new Bundle();
b.putString(remitente, remitente);
i.putExtras(b);
startActivity(i);
}
if(v.getId()==R.id.BtnCont){

}
if(v.getId()==R.id.BtnSts){
Log.d(menuOnClick3, ifSts);
Intent k = new Intent(main.this, status.class);
startActivity(k);
}
}

   }

This other one will make them work, but messes data flow, it makes
some variables inaccesible.

public class main extends Activity {

Button BtnMsj,BtnCont, BtnSts, BtnOk, BtnCancel, BtnLogin;

public static final String MY_DEFAULTSTRING_ID = defStrID;
private static final int SECOND_REQUESTCODE = 0x1337;

   BtnMsj = (Button) this.findViewById(R.id.BtnMsj);
   BtnMsj.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener(){

 public void onClick(View arg0) {
 Intent i = new Intent(main.this, mensajes.class);
 Bundle b = new Bundle();

 i.putExtras(b);
 startActivity(i);
 }
   });

   BtnCont = (Button) this.findViewById(R.id.BtnCont);
   BtnCont.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener(){
 public void onClick(View arg0) {
 Intent j = new Intent(main.this, ViewContactos.class);
 startActivity(j);
 }
   });

   BtnSts = (Button) this.findViewById(R.id.BtnSts);
   BtnSts.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener(){
 public void onClick(View arg0) {
 Intent j = new Intent(main.this, status.class);
 startActivity(j);
 }
   });

   }

   }

   }

what should I use to make both work?

[android-developers] AutoCompleteTextView without keyboard input

2008-11-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

This is what i am doing, I have a AutoCompleteTextView that filters
the contact names while you type them similar to what the sms app does
right now. In my app I have a virtual keyboard and I need the same
functionality to happen when I type with my VK.

For example, When I open the keyboard I can put in K in this
texfield and I will see a list with names starting with K, but if I
press my k button I do not get anything.

What I am doing is, concatenating strings into this textField, so when
my k button is pressed I add a k to the string that is already
there, my question is how can I have the TextView automatically start
filtering when I press my button, I have looked and do not see
anything that stands out in the API.

Thanks

  who can help us, when this is no longer the case and anyone can contribute.

 This was based on the (apparently wrong) assumption that the
 MediaPlayer source code is not available. Of course there can be a
 separate discussion on who should do the work.

  as David has said the things being asked for here are already well known
  limitations that effort is being put in to addressing.

 Excellent!

  By and large, all of the things being asked for aren't missing because they
  weren't deemed important, but simply because doing them is not trivial and
  will
  take significant effort to accomplish.

 I think we all understand and respect that. That is also why I think a
 deep understanding of the Android framework is needed to do this
 right. One can hardly expect that at this stage from third-party
 Android application developers who simply get stuck with the currently
 available audio functionality.

  As such, continual requests to have them added is not going to
  make that happen any faster. :)

 I understand. However, sharing some planning information on what is
 expected when would prevent those continual requests. Add some
 disclaimers where needed. Right now we only know that Google is aware
 of the problem and spending effort on it, but we do not have the
 slightest idea what priority it is given, when the next SDK will come
 out and when this particular audio problem is scheduled to be fixed.
 That is an invitation for sending regular reminders because we do
 not have the foggiest idea what is really going on and when we may
 expect results. Developers need to know that for their own application
 development planning, right?

 Anyway, don't let these discussions distract or discourage you from
 the real work. We are eagerly waiting for and will appreciate the
 solid results of your hard work.

If you look at the music player application, there are some lines in

 Does the directory exist? If not, you'll probably need to create it.
 getDir() should lazy-create the directory for you.

[android-developers] slowness in Creation of List with huge items set.

2008-11-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Developers,

  I am working on product Dubmenow, our application dub
provides smart way to share business card. I am using androids native
list view for most of our screens.

  When ever we instantiate List it takes time to load if we have
good amount of list items. Some times it seems application freezes for
some seconds. Although at the time of list creation, we have a
progress bar running. But at some point progress bar freezes (stops
spinning.) and after some time list shows up.
Because of this problem user experience goes for a toss.

Can you guys tell if this a common problem with the ListActivity, that
it takes time to load or to appear on screen if the number of items
are huge? I have seen even in android market place list is implemented
with pagination.

If someone has dealt with this problem and he/she can help me out it
would be appreciable.

Thanks and Regards,
Amit Chhabra

[android-developers] Re: Licensing question pertaining to the dex compilation process

2008-11-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Is this requirement coming from your reading of some license (like the
LGPL)?
If so, it is probably not a correct reading, since most licenses do
not actually *require* dynamic linking (for example, the LGPL does not
require dynamic linking, it just happens to be the method most often
used to fulfill one of it's disjunctive clauses).

To answer the immediate question, .dex files are not statically linked
normally when produced, but are prelinked on the device by odex to
everything in the bootclasspath. It is still possible to have
external references in .dex files that are resolved at runtime
(to .dex files not on the bootclasspath).
So, effectively, the .dex files produced prior to being on the device
are dynamically linked, get prelinked to stuff on the bootclasspath
when put on the device, and any remaining references are resolved at
runtime.
So it is a mixture of static and dynamic linking.

On Nov 20, 11:22 am, Nik Bhattacharya
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 I have a requirement that any 3rd party libraries that I use in my

 put third party jars into a lib directory and use those jars on the
 classpath for my project.  However, with the dex compilation process,
 all of the classes are compiled into a single dex file that then gets
 wrapped into the apk.  Does this now constitute a statically linked
 3rd party library.

 Thanks,
 Nik

   Has anyone else noticed this, and is this an issue with the phone's

[android-developers] Re: Documentation on T-Mobile G1 nightshot-mode?

We aren't supporting any additional features of the G1 camera at this

 unspecified what positive integer values do what for the nightshot-

 indoor use, i.e., under relatively dim light conditions.

imported packages. These packages are not part of android library per
the documentation, so they should be defined somewhere, but I could
not find them anywhere in the source code .
I had the same problem even with settings app.
Can U help me compile the browser app on eclipse ?
Can I compile the apps given on the emulator all at one time ?

fine, CTRL-F12 works fine.. but, and I may be misinformed here, it
appears the actual phone itself is not rotating the screen based on
the keyboard of position of the actual phone.

He even stated many of the default Google application aren't rotating

 to result in the screen being shown in the new orientation.  As such,
 there is no need to do anything yourself, at it looks like to the
 application is that the size of the screen has changed to match the
 new orientation.

 For different resources, normally you also don't need to do anything,
 because when the orientation changes the current activity is destroyed
 and a new one started, and the new one is running with a configuration
 matching the new orientation so will load the appropriate resources as
 it creates and initializes itself.

 The only except is if you are using android:configChanges to avoid
 being restarted due to a configuration change...  which is one of the
 reasons why it is strongly encouraged not to do this, and certainly if
 you are changing layouts due to the orientation I would really suggest
 letting the normal destroy/recreate path execute.  If you really
 really do want to mix the two, you will need to override
 onConfigurationChanged() and re-inflate your view hierarchy and re-
 initialize anything else depending on that or changing resources at
 that point.

Use OGG insteaed of WAVE. You'll find that it is lower overhead and

We will have better audio support in a future SDK.

 was too laggy. In my application, I'm trying to play the sound about
 75 times a minute, that is, once every 0.8 seconds. At this rate,
 there should be plenty of time (0.6 s) between invocations, but even
 with a pool of 10 MediaPlayers, things don't work very well. Like
 Robert Green said in this thread earlier, MediaPlayer is just unusable
 for short, repeated sounds. How has your experience been so far?

 On Nov 2, 11:20 am, tobias429 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

  Thanks for the tip! This actually does the trick. What I'm doing now

  MediaPlayers. bingSound is an instance of this helper class. If i call
  bingSound.play(), the helper class initializes the firstMediaPlayer
  in the array and starts it.

  When bingSound.play() is called again, the helper class takes the
  secondMediaPlayerin the array and so on. With this I can fire off
  the same sound very quickly several times, without having to make sure
  that the sound has finished before it can be played once more.

  For all MediaPlayers created I set the onCompletionListener as you
  suggested with the effect you described: the system does not fill up

  With this everything works fine now. All in all pretty complex though.

   of course you make so many calls to bingSound.start() per unit of time
   that the system has no chance (on average) to finish playing one
   bingSound before the next bingSound request already comes in. This
   approach works for me.

[android-developers] Re: MediaPlayer looping bug?

2008-11-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes, we should document it - I logged a bug. We needed a way to
specify that some ringtone files would loop continuously while others
would only play when triggered by the ring signal from the network.

   I'm trying to write play a sound once using a MediaPlayer object:

   MediaPlayer p1 = MediaPlayer.create(ctx, R.raw.tick);
   p1.setLooping(false);
   p1.start();

   R.raw.tick is a short OGG file. This always causes the MediaPlayer to
   loop. Even if I use an OnCompletionListener, it is never invoked. Is
   this a MediaPlayer bug or am I doing something wrong here?

  Update: Yes, there seems to be a bug with playing OGG files using the
  MediaPlayer. They loop continuously. I switched to WAV files instead
  and they work fine.

 Update: I dug deeper into the Android source code and realised that
 OGG files that contain ANDROID_LOOP=true in their metadata will loop,
 no matter what value you use for setLooping(). Technically, it's not
 a MediaPlayer bug, but it still seems like a backdoor undocumented way
 of causing audio files to loop. It should at least be documented in
 the SDK documentation.

[android-developers] Displaying Equations on Android

2008-11-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am currently working on an application that is essentially an
equation cheat sheet. I want to make the equations look good when
they are displayed, so I am thinking of using MathML, but I don't know
how I would implement this and include everything in a packaged
application. Any advice on how to do this? Or other suggestions for
displaying equations on Android?

Thanks,

Sam

[android-developers] Jythonroid: Jython runs successfully on Android Emulator

2008-11-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What is jythonroid
---

Jythonroid is a project for porting jython on Android platform.
Created by ClassFoo.

Jythonroid is console only at this time. It means oneday Android has
console/terminal app in device, you could use jython on real android
phone. (or please point me if there's an exist console/terminal app
for Android)

Jythondroid was worked on m5-build but outdated when 1.0 SDK comes
out. Now Jythonroid (branch) works on 1.0 SDK Android Emulator
again, Since there's no GUI yet, you could checked out the code, run
the emulator(install in emulator), and use adb shell to try
jythonroid.

[android-developers] Re: Compressed Camera Images

2008-11-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I believe there is a bug in the G1 camera driver that causes it to
ignore some parameters including picture size. Look for a fix in a
future release.

 I'm taking pictures with the Camera using takePicture(null, null,

 calling it as expected, but it seems to have no effect.

 Is there a way to have the camera produce natively small images? Do
 they have to be a specific size?

[android-developers] Re: File permission about MediaPlayer

2008-11-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Due to the Android security model, MediaPlayer does not have root
access rights. It can access the sdcard, but it can't access private
app directories.

Your app can explicitly grant MediaPlayer temporary access to secure
files by opening the file and passing the file descriptor to
MediaPlayer using the setDataSource(FileDescriptor fd) method.

On Nov 4, 10:36 pm, pa018 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Code first:
 InputStream is = ;//some mixed audio
 byte buf[] = new byte[1024];

 System.out.println(tempDir.getAbsolutePath());
 File temp = File.createTempFile(aaa, .mp3,
 this.getCacheDir());

 FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(temp);
 do {
 int numread = is.read(buf);
 if (numread = 0)
 break;
 out.write(buf, 0, numread);
 } while (true);
 out.flush();
 out.close();

 MediaPlayer mp = new MediaPlayer();
 mp.setDataSource(temp.getAbsolutePath());
 mp.prepare();
 mp.start();

 I want to make some audio fragments to one audio file, and
 MediaPlayer could not play with byte or stream, so I have to use
 tempfile.
 upper code would: 11-05 05:47:37.512: WARN/System.err(3934):
 java.io.IOException: Prepare failed.: status=0xFFFC.
 But, if I copy the temp file aaa.mp3 out by File Explore, and copy
 it into cache directory, the aaa.mp3 could be played.
 The temp file created by app in linux is : -rw--- app_18
 app_18  2868352 2008-11-05 03:54 aaa13710.mp3
 The file copyed into cache is : -rw-rw-rw- root root
 2868352 2008-11-05 04:20 aaa13710.mp3
 The fiile copyed into sdcard is:rw-rw- system system
 2868352 2008-11-05 05:12 aaa13710.mp3

so, I guess MediaPlayer play audio files with root account.
 Although creating temp file into sdcard is one solution, but i don't
 think it is a good method for slow efficiency. MediaPlay should be
 able to play with stream or byte, and it is a strange thing that I
 could create an audio file but play it.
 I saw other developers post this error, google wishes developer
 create temp files into sdcard, in fact, creating temp file into sdcard
 cann't solve anything.
