[android-developers] WIFI_P2P_PEERS_CHANGED_ACTION not broadcasting.
I am trying to develop wifi application...I've been doing it according to the source given in developer.android.com...But the WifiDirectBroadcastReceiver is getting notified for all the intents except for WIFI_WIFP2P_PEERS_CHANGED_ACTION. It shows success for discoverPeers(). But the intent is not being generated for peers_changed_action. I did everything i could and read every link in web. [android-developers] With security keyguard active transition between activities is weird
Hi, maybe someone has an idea, i'm looking for an answer for ages but no luck. I have my main activity A and when the user presses a button i open another activity B. But when this happens B doesn't just appear on top of A: - A disappears - secure keyguard shows up - B appears And when i get rid of B the same thing happens. This is annoying because there's a lot of flickering with no real purpose on the screen. Is there any way to achieve direct transition from A to B while keyguard is active without merging the 2 activities into 1? Re: [android-developers] ContentProvider contains dirty data from a previous JUnit test
In this case, I am testing the activities of my app with ActivityInstrumentationTestCase2. (I also have tests for the ContentProvider using ProviderTestCase2.) The two tests that I outlined earlier are for the data entry activity. I want to verify that the data entered is inserted into the underlying database. The Activity inserts the data via `getContentResolver.insert()`. The test case then opens the database directly to assert that the data is there. How would I use a MockContentProvider and/or other mock objects to perform this kind of testing? The `ContentProvider` is created indirectly by calling `getContentResolver()` from inside a method of the `Activity` under test. I will have to look into using `ApplicationTestCase` as you suggest. [android-developers] Unable to create new android application
First post ever.. I am running os x mountain lion and very recently downloaded and installed adt 21. I have previously had eclipse juno and helios installed as well as old versions of the SDK. Issue: Create a new android application project using the wizard, tick/untick various options or leave all defaults - no matter what I do, when I get to the last step and click Finish, the wizard does not close, an empty shell of a project is created with no files (only directories) and ADT starts chewing memory. I managed to create an empty project from the command line, however when I edit code in ADT I get no code autocomplete. I have spent the last 2 days trying various things including: 1) removing all traces of previous eclipse installations and plugins (including files in ~/Library, ~.android, ~.eclipse keyring, .metadata in my workspace) then re-installing ADT. 2) Removing components of the android SDK and re-installing (both from command line and from within eclipse (ADT) 3) I have even created a brand new user and installed the ADT on that account. I'm sort of desperate now, anybody have any ideas please? My configuration: java version 1.6.0_37 Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode) ADT: v21.0.1-543035 OS: 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) I am the computer administrator Thanks Stu -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. You have most of it. Just add a call to the JavaScript function from your code like this: mWebView.loadUrl(javascript:bookBtn();) ; That will fire the function just like if you did it in the address bar of a browser. Mark Murphy has this method documented in one of his books (http:// commonsware.com/). You might shell out for a subscription. [android-developers] Re: Call a WebView javascript function from the activity?
If you're having trouble debugging the JavaScript and HTML portion of your webview, you can always load that portion in a browser and use the standard debugging tools it provides to reveal errors. The debugging capabilities of webview are pretty limited. Do check your logs for JavaScript errors though, some show there, although they are more cryptic than we are used to seeing in the browser console. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: Unique ID for a device: why aren't devices certified Android-compliant?
A perfect use case for wanting a unique id is for trial software or simply keeping track of settings. Say for instance you have an app that has settings that are stored on a server. If the user uninstalls the app, then at a later date reinstalls it, those settings can be reinstated if there is a way to identify the device. The ANDROID_ID is really nice because it doesn't require any permissions to do so and it keeps the user relatively anonymous. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: Dev Console profile edit page??
I've been working with Google's API's and things since 2005 and have never encountered the level of technical competence that's been demonstrated with the Android market. It's as if a person with zero experience developing systems is at the wheel of this project. If it were me doing these things, I'd quit and try and join the forest service, although they wouldn't have me because of fear I'd burn the woods down tripping over a lantern while peeing. The scenarios I envision for the market are as follows: 1. A person with great power at Google is responsible for the Android market and everyone is afraid to tell him/her they are screwing the pooch. 2. The Android people just don't give a rat's behind about the market. 3. This is a grand experiment to see just how far the developer community can be pushed before we storm the Googleplex with torches and pitch forks. I'm inclined to believe #1 as I think the people who work on Android that I've met and had dealing with so far seem genuinely concerned and dedicated to making this platform a success. #3 does seem to be a possibility. Perhaps this part of someone's dissertation. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. Why would you need an app to implement this? I don't think you'll see much difference between zero seconds and 2 seconds in regard to battery life. Market rank can change depending on a number of factors such as country, carrier and even device. I've seen differences of as much as 20 positions depending on device alone. I believe being able to provide refunds is important. When you go to a real-world store Since a user upgrading to a pro version isn't buying anything tangible, it's more like going into a donut shop, buying a donut and eating it. How many consumers ask for refunds at that point? Under some circumstances, a refund is called for but not in the same way as a consumer returning an unopened package that can be resold. To me, issuing a refund for a software product is only to be done under some unusual circumstance not because of buyer remorse. I've had this policy for over 30 years and it has served me well. I have the policy stated in several places and so far, it hasn't been a problem. If you state this clearly then it shouldn't be an issue with the consumers. Sure, you may scare away a few by having this policy but the end result is less complaining and customers who are more likely to be satisfied. I see no reason to change this policy with apps. [android-developers] Re: Reducing 1 star ratings for IM; strategies
My main app Radar Now! couldn't possibly be simpler. You just start the app and that's it. Even with its simplicity, I still get one star ratings that claim doesn't work or my favorite sux. There will always be the dolt who can't figure out how to screw in a light bulb and consequently claims it doesn't work. You'll just to accept that and move on. Just try to make all instructions understandable by the lowest common denominator and you should have less problems. One thing that might help is a new rating system for apps where device owners have to read some simple instructions and answer three questions. If they can't get at least one right, then they get a rating of imbecile and are prevented from seeing apps that have omit imbeciles. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: What's the general consensus on the non-Android affiliated app stores?
I would be wary of the Chinese companies, you have no control over what they do and payment would be problematic. Most of the others are legitimate and offer an alternative to the somewhat quirky Android market. The issue isn't the companies offering these services, it's one of being in a small niche. Most mobile users depend on the market that came with their device. [android-developers] Re: Proposal to Market Place
...did you know you can download your app, rate it and comment it under your google market account ? A far better use for this tactic is to answer negative comments with a preface like Developer Comment: I've tested the app completely on the XYZ and it works perfectly. or something to that effect. That way you show any potential users that you care about the comments and are actively engaged, plus the obvious fact that the thing does in fact work on the XYZ in spite of the 1 star jerk's comment. As for feedback from users, I suggest making it very easy for them by supplying a method for them to simply click a button/link/whatever in side the app to contact you directly. That's what I do and have received extremely valuable suggestions and bug reports and questions from people having some sort of difficulty. [android-developers] Re: Pubish: Target phones with fast hardware.
What i need is target hardware like Memory, CPU, and OpenGL 2. I read a comment on this article http://androinica.com/2010/05/12/dear-google-please-let-android-developers-target-their-apps-for-specific-devices/ I really like this comment: *The problem here is not (and should never be) fixed by blocking specific devices. If anything, because the list of devices will soon be too large for a single person to handle. * * It should be handled by requiring the correct hardware, if the Market doesn't already support that. Barcode Scanner, for example, could require auto-focus camera (there are already means for requiring a camera, for example; we just need a requirement for auto-focus). Raging Thunder 2 should ask for OpenGL ES 2, or a certain amount of VRAM, or whatever. * *tl;dr the Market needs many improvements, but blacklisting or whitelisting devices is a horrible solution. Check for hardware capabilities.*** * * Basically android already supports this partially with the uses-feature in the xml manifest. However there should be more support for the hardware types i mentioned. So: How should i do it now? And how is this going to be supported in the future? My only option now is to detect it on startup and give an alert box to the user that it doesnt work on their phone. However then my whole sale-model is ruined. 2010/11/20 DutchAndroidGuru dutchandroidg...@gmail.com I have an application that loads a 3dmodel and renders it. These models are rather big and i can only get it to work fast on faster hardware phones such as the Nexus One. However there is no way to target faster hardware phones. Now i get very good ratings (on phones where it work) and very bad rating (on slow phones). Also: i would like to know the phone type when a user comments. In this way i can test it and check whether the user had a valid point or not. Could you please add this? [android-developers] Re: Do you spend any time sending DMCA notices
I sent one recently to Appbrain. They sent me an e-mail suggesting that someone was trying to claim my apps on their site. It seemed to me to be a spammy attempt to get me to sign up on their site and pay them for app promotion. Here's the text: (redacted) ** Hello USNaviguide LLC, bogus e-mail@gmail.com requested to claim ownership of your apps on www.appbrain.com, the online Android app directory. Claiming your app gives access to the advanced AppBrain stats, and to AppBrain's free and paid promotion services. Please click this link to claim your developer account on AppBrain: http://www.appbrain.com/verify_dev?d=redacted Please contact me if you have any questions. Best regards, Mathijs Vogelzang, AppBrain team ** This unscrupulous marketing tactic prompted me to ask them to remove my apps from their site. When they wouldn't do that, I filed a DMCA notice which got them to do it. SInce then, I've noticed app comment spam like this: by Dylan (October 13, 2010) Great App! Search for more free apps at www.redacted.com The site is always a parked domain using Google AdSense for domains but the kicker is the primary result in the ads is always Appbrain. This leads me to believe that Appbrain is spamming comments to promote their questionable site. I've seen this app spam in one form or another on dozens of popular apps. As far as I know, there is no way to stop such unscrupulous marketing tactics nor is there a way to remove or block these appbrain spammers from continuing this spammy marketing campaign. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: Do you spend any time sending DMCA notices
To me, that appbrain e-mail smacked of a scam to get me to sign up with their site and a come-on for paid promotion of my app. Plus, the e-mail address they had as the one who was trying to claim my app was bogus. The additional facts that the app comment spam implicates appbrain in spamming dozens of apps to promote their site shows immoral business practices. How many others have had their app continuously spammed by these AdSense for domains comments? Don't you find it curious that Appbrain is always the primary advertiser? It appears as if Appbrain is a scam and a source of spam. Not only have they been spamming comments in apps but also spamming developers in a bid to solicit paid promotion. The only conclusion I can come to is appbrain is run by people who are trying their best to scam money out of developers and generate traffic by spam and other unscrupulous methods. Appbrain is basically no different than a pirate site in that they are using dishonest methods to profit off the hard work of developers. Developers should demand their apps be removed from Appbrain's scam site. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: appbucket: all apps for $9.99 per year, are we just going to watch?
The problem with publicizing that they are pirates is that people looking for pirate Android sites will now find them. It's better to use phrases like Appbucket is a scam and Appbucket took my money and I got nothing or Appbucket stole my credit card number - all of which would scare people away rather than attract them. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: appbucket: all apps for $9.99 per year, are we just going to watch?
True, but the second and third options could set you up for a lawsuit. That would be rich. A pirate suing for such a thing... They would have to reveal who they really are and that would probably open themselves up for more trouble than it would be worth. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. I guess you'd just have to post anonymously... that would be easy enough. Let them try and find the real person behind the post. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: Reading webpage data
Try using read instead: byte[] buffer = new byte[2048]; ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream(); while ((size = in.read(buffer, 0, buffer.length)) != -1) { total += size ; baos.write(buffer, 0, size) ; } Warning: code pasted from brain - could contain errors... -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: How to calculate distance between to city (dynamically)
The Haversine formula computes distance between two points along a spheroid (such as Earth). You will need to know the coordinates of each city to use this formula. Coordinates for nearly all cities in the world can be downloaded from the geonames.org website for free. The Google geocoder will also return those coordinates but you'll have to obey the terms in order for you to use that service. For the exact formula, try searching Google. -John Coryat -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group.
