Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Image hosting for Aspace

2020-02-24 Thread Jason Loeffler
Just to be clear, the intent of the original post was to drop a publicly
available, resolvable URI in the appropriate ArchivesSpace digital object
field. Do I have that right?

If that's the case, there's no reason any sufficiently permissive and
addressable web resource couldn't be used; you could make a corpus of files
available and then attach their web addresses to digital objects using API
calls.

Whether this is best practice from a repository management standpoint is
another matter. But as a cheap, relatively frictionless way to make images
available to your admin pages, PUI, and/or ArchivesSpace consumer, it's
very straightforward.

Best, Jason

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Image hosting for Aspace

2020-02-21 Thread Jason Loeffler
Amazon S3 has the least friction by far, most resiliency and security, and
gives you options down the road should you need to extend your service copy
functionality, make your assets portable, or migrate to a repository
implementation. Steps include creating an S3 bucket on AWS, set up a secure
FTP connection to move files to the bucket, and configure/harden
permissions properly. Just make sure you 1) have some sense of the volume
of files (measured in multipes of bytes) beforehand as it is a metered
service and 2) exert some control over which parties in your organization
have access to the bucket. This has come up enough on the forum to warrant
unofficial high-level documentation for non-techinical administrators. If
there's demand, I can pull something together.

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] "lost" collections after transferring between repositories/upgrades?

2018-03-13 Thread Jason Loeffler
In 1.5.1 there was a major issue with "losing" connections between
repositories and digital objects when digital objects were transferred
between repositories.

https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/projects/AR/issues/AR-1405

But what you describe may be an indexing issue. Brute force approach, but
have you rebuilt the index from scratch?

I tried a few of the other log levels at config.rb and receive only info

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] ILS and AS

2017-11-27 Thread Jason Loeffler
Great to hear so much interest and support in ILS integration. Unless
anyone has any other ideas, I propose putting out an open call to the
community to garner interest in forming a working group to:

   - share information
   - flesh out use cases
   - define workflows
   - and, possibly, contribute to a specification for a plugin or core
   enhancements, should the need arise.

Does anyone want to second this approach?

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] ILS and AS

2017-11-27 Thread Jason Loeffler
Hi Shelley,

This topic has been discussed recently in Integrations
<https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/ADC/pages/17137746/Integrations>
meetings,
though, given team members current commitments, we temporarily dropped the
discussion.

At the Academy's New York office, we're currently using a few custom tools
to map ArchivesSpace resource component JSON to MARC bibliographic records.
The latest version of ArchivesSpace has an OAI-PMH MARC responder. If your
ILS has an OAI-PMH client that may be worth exploring. Reconciling subject
and named authorities between the two systems is particularly tricky. Happy
to discuss this in more detail should the occasion arise.

I'm curious to know whether other institutions are grappling with this use
case. If there's a critical mass of support, perhaps the Integrations team
should take this matter up in the future.

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Digital objects in v2.1.1

2017-10-03 Thread Jason Loeffler
Hi Stephen,

Possibly related to https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/browse/ANW-219?

Can one of the core committers weigh in on this?

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Looping indexer of death

2017-09-27 Thread Jason Loeffler
I'm again seeing what I've dubbed the looping indexer of death. Solr
indexer progresses through a repository, emits an opaque error, then bails
out and starts from the top of the queue.

Gist of log output here
<https://gist.githubusercontent.com/jasloe/7dc882b3ac860284586b033aa681a8ed/raw/329342a1db8e9acffd53a39b5849cbbccac80567/looping_indexer_of_death.txt>
.

May or may not be related to:
https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/browse/ANW-220

Checked the database and didn't catch any orphaned records.

Ideas?

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] [EXT] Re: can't view collections on the backend

2017-09-21 Thread Jason Loeffler
Are you making an external http request to an endpoint, resulting in the
log output above? Or are you somehow issuing the POST method internally?

What do you mean by "I simply clicked collections and then clicked on the
first one"?

Can you refer us to the other user report for this error?

Hello,

I’m having a few issues with Archivesspace. First, I cannot view the contents
of a collection on the backend view (:8089). I can view them on the front end
and edit them. But the backend view says (We're sorry, but something went

Hi Jeremy,

Can you include more information about your environment, e.g. server OS and
database server version? Can you connect to the database directly using
your ArchivesSpace username and password as stored in config.rb?

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] rights types and upgrade to 2.1.1

2017-08-23 Thread Jason Loeffler
Thanks, Christine. Yes, I observed Payten's notes at ANW-114 and that
clarifies the issue. All records were migrated to new values correctly and
remarkably quickly.

Our remaining issue is with the re-configuration of default value
templates. For interested parties, I've added my notes to ANW-114 that
further clarifies the issue. We were able to resolve our immediate issue
with MySQL queries. Not sure if this is a bug or a feature but it would be
nice to make the rights statements contained in default templates PREMIS
compliant in a future release.

Best, Jason

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] rights types and upgrade to 2.1.1

2017-08-22 Thread Jason Loeffler
Following an upgrade from 1.5.1 to 2.1.1, we're seeing an issue with rights
statements.

It looks like the upgrade blows away our custom rights statement rights
types from the controlled value rights type enumeration leaving us with
only the new default types: copyright, license, statute, other.

In practice, attempting to edit default values for resources components
yields the following
<https://gist.github.com/minorscience/86d1380dd8ed3680f33bd3877b1f>.
This also prevents the creation of new resource components. Furthermore,
existing records have their rights statement rights type are overwriting
with 'other'.

Just wanted to inquire whether this is replicable for anyone else or
whether there is an additional upgrade task or documentation I'm missing.

Thanks, JL

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] MARCXML export archival objects

2017-08-04 Thread Jason Loeffler
I submitted the ticket that Christine mentioned that would provide this
functionality. Apart from the excellent work on OAI-PMH, I can't think of a
reason not to have parity between resources and archival objects apropos
exporting MARC from the staff interface as well as retrieving records via a
REST API endpoint.

I briefly corresponded with Esha Datta at NYU on this matter last year.
Maybe if Esha is listening she could chime in? As I recall this would
entail extending the export helpers module and probably also the MARC
model.

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Python ArchivesSpace scripting library

2017-08-03 Thread Jason Loeffler
Don't want to add any overhead to this but at one point late last year I
recall a proposal from Max Eckard, Esmé, Sally V., et al. for an Awesome
-style list to house these kinds
of projects. Establishing such a list and collecting the prior art there
might be a good way to help set both projects in motion.

And +1, I can contribute.

Hi Patrick,

I use a CI test harness regularly with Drupal development. Are you looking to
fork AS and customize your code base and deploy that or do you simply want to
write tests for the existing production branch?

Hey List,

I’m pretty new to Continuous Integration and scripted testing, so I thought I’d
email the list. Anyone using TravisCI to create automated tests and to
integrate with their ArchivesSpace production? I’m trying to up our software
deployment game and could use some tips and tricks if you have them.

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] bar coding and migration questions

2017-03-01 Thread Jason Loeffler
Hi Kelly,

Recording Item-level bar codes is possible through the container module.
Yale University, who supported development of the latest version of the
container module, has provided some useful notes here
<http://guides.library.yale.edu/archivesspace/ASpaceContainerManagement>.

There is no way to directly import from an Access database. However, you
could certainly perform an export-based migration whereby you export your
Access data and relationships to an interim format, such as JSON or CSV,
and import the data using the API and/or one or more of the ArchivesSpace
import tools.

Let me know if that helps get your started.

Best, Jason

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] query patterns for strings

2017-02-17 Thread Jason Loeffler
This example works taking into account solr/schema.xml
<https://github.com/hudmol/archivesspace/blob/0bdeaabc6b3e8c878590e3d4db0e8c5b99b8c344/solr/schema.xml>
:

search?page=1&?page_size=1={"query":{"field":"title","value":"foo","jsonmodel_type":"field_query"}}'

This example returns "Unrecognized search field: id".

search?page=1&?page_size=1={"query":{"field":"id","value":"anything","jsonmodel_type":"field_query"}}'

Is there an additional parameter required to address fields where
type="string"?

I am setting up AS with the expectation that the general public will be able to
digitally browse our finding aids should they wish to. In order to do this, my
IT department says that I need a server with dedicated space to support the
browsing,
as well as server space to run the back end of AS. Is this accurate? If so,
does anyone purchase server space from a reputable host? Is it horribly
expensive?

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] GET & POST methods for terms

2017-02-09 Thread Jason Loeffler
Thanks, James. Looking at the docs again, I now see my misunderstanding.

term.*.uri is indeed misleading. Could be a mnemonic for the term database
identifier (term.id) or otherwise a development artifact.

So I take it 1) terms can't be updated by conventional means (i.e. the API)
and 2) my primary alternative is to issue database queries in order to
perform bulk updates to a set of terms?

Hello everyone:

I have a large collection of files that are physically organized by an ID
number present in the records, but would make more sense intellectually to be
displayed in alphabetical order.

Using rapid data entry for file level description, I’d like to enter the files
based on how they are organized physically in the boxes, but then then re-sort
the list alphabetically by title. Is this possible? The only re-ordering
options I see are dragging and dropping individually.

Am I missing anything?

Annie

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] publishing agents -- Is there a global option?

2016-12-15 Thread Jason Loeffler
Following import, the agent records were not published by default? I can't
recall whether that was a bug in 1.4.2.

As there are currently no front-end tools for bulk updating agent records,
you'll have to either publish each one-by-one or otherwise avail yourself
of the API to update agent records. If you have access to the server your
ArchivesSpace instance runs on, it's a fairly straightforward process.
Happy to walk you through the process if needed.

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Deleting in Bulk From the Staff Interface

2016-12-15 Thread Jason Loeffler
Thanks, Noah. I've looked at your scripts in the past and liked what I saw.
CalTech is also doing great work with their Go project. That said,
standardizing around a common toolset would take the burden off of
institutions with developing one-off workarounds (assuming they have
developer support in the first place, of course).

We perform all of our bulk operations with the API. For record creation and
updates, I'm using Catmandu <http://librecat.org/> extensively to process
CSV, MARC, and other formats to ArchivesSpace JSON. (Catmandu is a
meta-language that has a lot of support from the European ILS communities
and it's part of the latest branch of Koha.) Happy to share my Catmandu
scripts with you, if you like. There's also an EAD processor
<https://github.com/LibreCat/Catmandu-EAD> already afoot which I'm eager to
implement.

If there's further community interest, I'd be interested in taking this
offline or forming an informal working group.

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] How are people integrating various ids like ISNI and VIAF in ArchivesSpace

2016-12-14 Thread Jason Loeffler
Hi there.
There are plans for a refactor of the agents module including a more complete
adherence to the EAC-CPF scheme. A revision of the EAC-CPF specification is in
a late draft. Cory Nimer at BYU is leading the charge on that, with comments
coming from the community. The development roadmap should acknowledge planned
work on this. I hope to see this functionality in 2017 as our organization
could definitely use this.
Best, Jason

external systems. Are these on the road map to be included in ArchivesSpaces’
agent model? I think there is a field in EAC that would be used to hold these

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Call for information on ArchivesSpace integrations

2016-12-06 Thread Jason Loeffler
Dear Colleagues,

The ArchivesSpace Technical Advisory Committee Integrations sub-team maintains
a page <https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/wiki/display/ADC/Integrations>
on the ArchivesSpace wiki that documents current and planned integrations.

Please let us know if your member organization has a current or planned
integration by filling out this Google form
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScrz3ZpZRIz6qYf7ZV4plV_6eb8bc3lfPvWO9FquhRKmiqepQ/viewform>
.

We’ll use this information to populate the wiki page, communicate your work
with the ArchivesSpace community, and to develop resources for other member
organizations interested in integrations.

Additionally, if you have an idea for an integration or a specification
that requires technical review, we'd be happy to review it during our
monthly conference call.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at ja...@minorscience.com or
the ArchivesSpace Integrations sub-team lead, Max Eckard, at
ecka...@umich.edu.

Thanks for your contribution to the ArchivesSpace community.

I should add that application performance was a hot topic in August last
year. Some of the issues described have been mitigated and/or implemented;
others not so much.

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Problems working with archival object with large number of direct children

2016-11-15 Thread Jason Loeffler
Hi Sally,

Definitely, yes. We have many resources with 5,000 or more archival object
records. We've deployed on some pretty decent Amazon EC2 boxes (16GB
memory, burstable CPU, etc.) with negligible improvement. I have a feeling
that this is not a resource allocation issue. Looking at the web inspector,
most of the time is spent negotiating jstree and/or
loading* all JSON objects* associated with a resource into the browser.
Maybe an ASpace dev can weigh in.

me know if you need any help interpreting the report.

At some point, and quite apart from this thread, I hope we can collectively
revisit the staff interface architecture and recommend improvements.

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Anyone have an export script (using API) for digital objects to go into DSpace?

2016-11-02 Thread Jason Loeffler
Thanks, Kari.

Lots of ways to do this. I would recommend first retrieving ArchivesSpace
digital objects with the standard API calls. I've only worked with the raw
JSON output but I see there are methods for METS
<http://archivesspace.github.io/archivesspace/api/#get-repositories-repo_id-digital_objects-mets-id-xml>
and MODS
<http://archivesspace.github.io/archivesspace/api/#get-repositories-repo_id-digital_objects-mods-id-xml>
output. Probably the METS output is what you're looking for. From there you
could use Catmandu <https://github.com/LibreCat/Catmandu> to transform your
d.o. collection so that it's inline with whatever DSpace requires. Catmandu
supports myriad formats. Absent bulletproof importers and exporters in
ArchivesSpace, I've worked with Catmandu quite a lot lately to transform
XML- and JSON-formatted documents for import and export to and from
ArchivesSpace. From the DSpace side, I see DSpace vesrion 5 now has a
full-blown REST
<https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC5x/REST+API#RESTAPI-Model-Objectdatatypes>
implementation,
though I have no direct experience working with it.

Let me know if that's helpful. Happy to walk you through Catmandu anytime,
if it seems like a good fit for your use case.

Best, Jason

Hi there Kari,

A script for requesting digital objects from ArchiveSpace or for staging
and importing digital objects into DSpace?

Hi Lydia,
You can iterate over the desired location end points via the API and perform a
delete operation. Let me know if you need help setting this up.

Hello everyone,
I’ve definitely learned to try out my more ambitious projects in our test
instance after this location snafu. We tried to roll back the instance to a
backup last night, reindexed everything, and the bad locations were all still
there! If any of you know of a way to target mass delete the locations (nearly
6500 location entries), please let me know!
