Re: Asset Create and Update Permission Limits

2012-08-31 Thread ITSM.Support
Hi,

Please find some additional info below:

If you are an Asset Admin for a Company you can create, update and delete any
asset.

Comments: True. Additionally, you can
1. Access to do Bulk Updates
2. Access to Manage Inventory
3. Ability to relate one CI to other
4. Full access to manage all configurations
5. Full access to manage all costs
6. Full Access to manage all schedules

If you are an Asset User and are a member of any of the Supported by groups
related to an asset then you can modify that asset (with some limitations).

Comments: True, Full Access to those CI’s affiliated to their support groups
(read access to others).

ITSM 7.6.4 sp2

The Asset Management application appears to have only two levels of
permissioning (not concerned update Asset Viewer).

This my understanding:
If you are an Asset Admin for a Company you can create, update and delete any
asset.
If you are an Asset User and are a memeber of any of the Supported by groups
related to an asset then you can modify that asset (with some limitations).

Are there any other levels that I am missing? Is there something between the
Asset Admin and the Supported by permissioning?

Thank you

Re: Asset Create and Update Permission Limits

2012-08-31 Thread Frank Caruso
Thank you for the extra information but I was looking to confirm that there are
no other levels of permissions within Asset management, something between an
Asset Admin and being in a Supported by group.

As an Asset Admin you can do everything or if you are an Asset User within a
Supported by group you have some limited update permissions. We are finding
this permission model very limiting. Assets can bounce around different parts
of the country and having to keep updating the Supported by group each time the
asset moves is a task our end users do not want to handle. The only other
choice I see is making them all Asset Admins or modifying underlying ITSM work
flow, groups and roles.

Has anybody had this same issue?

Thank you again.

 Misi,
I tend to agree with you, but in the last several years I found MANY things
that the Remedy server does poorly...I'll give you an example.

You need to get the sum of a particular table column via filter with the
default server side table chunk of 1000, and you have 200,000 records in the
 table.

Issuing a SELECT SUM(COLUMN) FROM TABLE WHERE QUALIFICATION returns the
 result in sub second.

If you however do a set-field COLSUM(COLUMN), it's interesting to watch the
Remedy server do its thing and how it does itaccording to the docs, the
server side table chunk size is used to manage memory, but in this situation
it actually causes NO memory savings, and causes the entire process to take
WAYYY T long...basically what it does is

SELECT TOP 1001 C1, C2, C3, etc FROM TABLE WHERE QUALIFICATION

Where C1-x are the columns in the table. Then it determines that there are
more records than that, so it adds 1000 to the select

SELECT TOP 2001 C1, C2, C3, etc FROM TABLE WHERE QUALIFICATION

Again, determining that it needs more records

 Etc

It continues issuing queries until the 'top' is high enough to select all of
the records, each subsequent select taking more time than the last. I have
seen this process take over 10 minutes with a single transaction in a custom
system I was working on at the time. Converting COLSUM set-field calls to
SELECT SUM calls greatly enhanced the performance and scalability of the
 process.

I agree with you that things should be done 'inside' the Remedy framework
where that doesn't significantly impact performance of the process, but I
have come across countless situations in the last several years that pushed
Remedy beyond its boundaries and needed 'help' from other methods of doing
things to get them done properly. In fact I'm presenting one of those @ RUG
 this year :)

 Hi,

Well, this particular code might very well work across databases.

The other main concern with Direct SQL is that it is untraceable by the AR
System. The AR System does not understand what you are doing, and you can not
use AR tools to trace and analyze it in the same way as other workflow.

Then we have the issue of going straight at the T-tables, and other things
related to datatype-conversion for timestamps, enum-values

You will also be bypassing permissions.

I am convinced that using the ARAPI and the provided AR-workflow-actions is
worth some effort in lieu of direct SQL. Even if it would mean some small
 performance hit.

In this specific case, it much depends on the nomber of records in the table.

It might be faster, but it is direct SQL and may not work on any
 database...

 select count(*) from HPD_Help_Desk

Does Remedy support a database where the above ANSI SQL won't work?

I suppose if ARS implements view names for their tables differently in
another database, it would not be HPD_Help_Desk, but does anyone
know of which database that would be? Just curious because the above
works on Oracle and SQL Server.

What I have noticed in DS 7.6.04 is the View ID cannot be changed for the
initial view of a new form. When adding additional views to a form you can
change the View ID before saving the new view.

I have used archgid.exe to update View IDs without any issue. Looks like
Victor will need to use archgid.exe to change the initial View ID for a new
form and then from there on out you can change it in Dev Studio.

Re: Customizing view ID

2012-08-31 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
Either use archgid after saving the form or when creating the form do a Form -
Duplicate View (and set the ID to what you want it to be). Then you can delete
the original default view that is generated and just work with the view that
has your view ID.

I have used archgid.exe to update View IDs without any issue.  Looks like

form and then from there on out you can change it in Dev Studio.

Want to create a join form between two classes. One class is
BMC:PhysicalLocation and the other is a custom class. I can create the join
form using the developer tool but none of the underlying forms permissions
(roles) are carried forward, not even Public. I tried adding my join form
directly to the Asset Management application but that was not allowed. I then
tried creating the join form from the Asset Management Application but it said
I had to Overlay the object first, which is not possible unless you change your
development mode and that does not sound like something I want to do.

How does one easily create join forms against classes that carry forward
underlying permissions?

Thank you

Re: Customizing view ID

2012-08-31 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza

This is a ‘me too’ kind of a response.. I have observed the same too..

I have also ‘heard’ some talk that the Id that it automatically assigns, is
used internally by the AR Server to know that it’s the Default Admin View. But
I never believed that, because you can change the default admin view to
something else and the view ID doesn’t’ change..

So given that, I would love to know if there was intent behind not allowing a
user to fix the view ID while form creation, and if so what that intent was.
Because it would have been nice to be able to fix it before creating the form
rather than using the archgid to achieve that..
