I would be very surprised if your modem is supported by Asterisk - but I

What does 'zap show status' and 'zap show channels' show in the Asterisk

And after you 'modprobe wctdm' what does your dmesg
read? /var/log/messages?
You should see something about a card being recognised
PaulH
After I modprobe wctdm, nothing new shows up in /var/log/messages
IF I wanted to do the whole sophisticated telephony VoIP stuff
asterisk, what hardware would I need? I have a feeling that my fax
modem is probably not going to work out. My wife and I have an income
of $650 a month. After the first-of-the-month bills are payed, we're
lucky if we have $100 left

cheapy PC (throw away PII is fine) and if you want to use the PSTN, a

only need it if you want to
I need to moprobe something else or alter my kernel config for ztcfg

What
I changed
fxsks=2
to
fxsks=1
and now ztcfg works:
camille ~ # ztcfg -vv
Zaptel Configuration

Channel map:
Channel 01: FXS Kewlstart (Default) (Slaves: 01)
1 channels configured.
camille ~ #
I bought the card on ebay. The seller sent some configuration
Here's where I stand:
camille asterisk # ztcfg -vv

Channel 01: FXS Kewlstart (Default) (Slaves: 01)
1 channels configured.
camille*CLI zap show status

Could the fact that asterisk isn't aswering the phone be a firewall
issue? What port(s) on TCP and UDP do I need to open for incoming calls
to be allowed to go to asterisk?

This should show something like this :

Now for some reason instead of giving me an error on the caller ID, it's
not mentioning the caller ID at all. Is there some explicit thing I
need to put in to get the caller ID?

OK. My basic asterisk install seems to be working. I can get caller
ID. My dialplan says:
[incoming]
; incoming calls from the FXO port are directed to this context from
zapata.conf
exten = s/9185415897,1,Set(CALLERID(name)=Michael Sullivan)
exten = s/9185415897,1,HANGUP(1)
exten = s,1,Set
