[Asterisk-Users] Semi-OT: An idea for New Orleans temporary communications infrastructure

2005-09-02 Thread Jeremy Melanson
Just something I was thinking about today...

The communications infrastructure of New Orleans and surrounding
communities has been obliterated. It occurred to me that it may be
possible to provide outgoing phone capability using a few Asterisk
servers, connected wirelessly (routing provided using NoCat, MIT
Roofnet, or some other wireless routing implementation), and 20-30 SIP
phones connected to each server. Using a couple good internet
connections, one could theoretically use asteriskout.com or a similar
service for the outgoing calls.

Some hurdles would need to be overcome:

1. Where to get the equipment. A basic setup for each point of presence
would require 1 computer (preferrably a high-powered laptop, 20-30
low-cost SIP phones, and 1 ethernet switch to connect the phones. We
would also need a means to provide high-gain 802.11b/g networking from
the machine, or some other piece of equipment.

2. Power for the equipment. SIP phones are fairly low in terms of power
consumption. IMHO, a single gas generator for each point of presence
would be required.

3. Internet connectivity. Where and how would one provide internet
connectivity to the nodes, and what would be the required bandwidth?
Could a local ISP, satellite broadband, or telecom provider be contacted
to provide the needed bandwidth? Who would pay for the service?

4. Funding and help. This would obviously cost time and money to
implement. One could potentially solicit donations for equipment and
money, and time from volunteers willing to assist in the rollout and
management.

5. Security. Local law enforcement and/or the Army National Guard may be
required to provide security assistance due to the anarchic state of the
region.

-

It's just an idea I had. It may not even be feasable, or even worth it.
I know that if I was stranded somewhere, I'd at least want to be able to
contact family or loved-ones outside to let them know I'm ok.
I'd be curious if anyone had some thoughts on the value and feasability
of such a project as this. I live in Massachusetts, and have no ability
to get down there myself at the present time, but I'd be willing to
provide what I can with funding, equipment, planning, and remote
administration if needed.

Re: [Asterisk-Users] Polycom Default .cfg

2005-08-24 Thread Jeremy Melanson
I'm using Firmware 1.5.2. On my phone the appropriate settings are under
Menu/Settings/Advanced/Admin Settings/Network Configuration/Server Menu.

Make sure that 'Server Type' is 'FTP, and that 'Server User' and 'Server
Password' are correct. I don't recommend using an anonymous user, but
you may be able to use it by specifying 'anonymous' or 'ftp' for your '
Server User'. I have not verified that this works.

Also, if you are registering your phone's IP address via DHCP, you can
specify your FTP server as a 'TFTP Server' entry in your DHCP Server's
config. Otherwise, make sure that 'Server Address' is correct on the
phone.

[Asterisk-Users] Querying Nagios users...

2005-07-28 Thread Jeremy Melanson
Hi all!

I've created a Nagios plugin that runs CLI commands via the Management
Interface, and checks the output of the command. It was originally
intended to check against my PRI line, but now it's a nice interface to
run just about any CLI command against it.

If anyone is interested, I can send the script (it's in Perl) and an
example of how to check the PRI status in Nagios.

I'd love to hear from other people about how to use it to check other
Asterisk features too.

Re: [Asterisk-Users] Querying Nagios users...

2005-07-28 Thread Jeremy Melanson
Hi Mike.

The attached .tar.gz file contains the Perl script. It requires utils.pm
(part of the nagios-plugins package). In my case, the file is in
/usr/lib/nagios/plugins. You may need to modify the use lib entry in
the script if yours is in a different location. I also recommend that
the script be installed in the same directory, but it is not necessary.

You can get a list of options by typing 'check_ast-cmd -h' from your
shell.

Some caveats:

Currently, all the script does is allow you to issue a command, and
check the output of the Manager Interface against a specified Perl
Regular Expression. It will only tell you if it matches or not.

While you can define the password from the command line (using -P), it
is recommended that you modify the default in the script. Any passwords
called from the command line in using Nagios can be accessed from the
web interface in clear text.

* I'd love to hear from you if you have any suggestions on how to use
this script to test other parts of Asterisk.

Nagios command examples...
If you're reasonably familiar with Nagios, you can probably skip the
info below.

Check the status of PRI:

define command {
  command_name check_ast-pri
  command_line /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_ast-cmd -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -n
AST_PRI -c pri show span 1 -e Status: Provisioned, Up, Active -g
PRI Operational -E Problem with PRI -v
}

define service {
  name ast-pri-options
  service_description ASTERISK-PRI
  is_volatile 0
  max_check_attempts 3
  normal_check_interval 5
  retry_check_interval 1
  register 0
  check_command check_ast-pri
  active_checks_enabled 1
  passive_checks_enabled 0
  parallelize_check 1
  obsess_over_service 1
  check_freshness 0
  notifications_enabled 0
  event_handler_enabled 0
  flap_detection_enabled 0
  process_perf_data 1
  retain_status_information 1
  retain_nonstatus_information 1
  check_period 24x7
host_name [ASTERISK_HOSTNAME] ; Change this value to your Asterisk
machine's host_name (as defined in hosts.cfg).
  contact_groups [CONTACT_GROUP] ; Change the value to a valid
contactgroup (as defined in contactgroups.cfg).
  notification_interval 240
  notification_period 24x7
  notification_options c,r
}

My two (s)cents...

* Anything from New Kids on The Block.

* Put the pop-hook guitar riff from the Friends theme on repeat.

* The Happy Flowers (http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/MrHCIHF/ ,

called Mom, I Gave the Cat Some Acid.

* If you can get the song from this flash animation converted to MP3,
then it might be good (bad):
http://www.ebaumsworld.com/flash/spacepeople.html .

* Just do a web search for Industrial Sound Collage. I'm sure you'll
find something appropriate.

* I have a Barney-themed sound collage I created that I might be
willing to share.

Hope this helps (hinders?) your business.

I guess I didn't word this right.
It's not that SpanDSP ties up extensions, as it definitely doesn't. I
was more referring to the standard hardware-based solutions out there
that need to have a dedicated line for an incoming fax. I need the
ability to send and receive faxes with a good amount of reliability, and
would love to integrate it with Asterisk. I'm just not keen on needing
to buy a bunch of Digium TDM cards just to support such a solution.

Don't get me wrong, SpanDSP is great! I'm just looking for something a
little more enterprise-ready.
