I agree with David, Asterisk 11 is the current sweet-spot unless you require
some of the new Asterisk 13 features.
We probably should consider ending Asterisk 1.8 versions in our "official"
images, possibly 2016 will be the last year for Asterisk 1.8 unless there are
objections.

Well 1.8 is officially past its end-of-life date. I have been using
Asterisk 11 for several years now and it is working reliably. I did try
Asterisk 13 when it first came out but had issues with calls just
disconnecting on me after say 10 minutes or so. Because of that I went
back to Asterisk 11

Without knowing how you use Asterisk in your AstLinux image it is hard to
advise which version is the best.
