You pretty much have to keep exploring and using the left Alt key. Follow the ringing sound and you'll find a crowd of people. There'll be a scene. Then you have to explore again until you fight your first battle.

I also thought of getting a talking all in one device similar to this one but if software can replace it, then I am all up for that.and also, what do you use to measure things? preferably if it does have the metric system because imperial is just a nightmare I never lived with plus no one uses it in this country.

Re: Need help with a paper

Hmm, it depends. Pure blind gaming seems to be fractionally small, typically revolving around things like muds, interactive fiction, a select number of specially designed audiogames, and a selection of mobile games. However, there are also plenty of mainstream games blind gamers play using various things like cues, guides, and such, like GTA 5, Injustice, Killer Instinct, Doom 2, etc. So you could try checking out Sightless Kombat and a few others in that space who do reviews of the accessibility, or rather playability of mainstream games. Oh, and lets not forget things like Pen and Paper games like Dungeons and Dragons, or board and card games either.I've also seen talks from the dev's on Overwatch who wanted to design their game so it can be played purely with sound, but then immediately say they don't think that would be possible, which is a pretty good indictator of the attitude of some in the mainstream community, or of their lack of familiarity with audiogaming. Also check out Ian Hamilton who advocates for accessibility in the mainstream community, or Karen Steven's whos worked with EA on accessibility, on Gamasutra.com. I've also heard a bit from Ian Hamilton and from various sources that Microsoft also has a small accessibility team who works on a few skunkworks accessibility projects, like that braille game controller addon for example.Other more local people to talk or do some research on could also be some of the dev's here like Aprone, etc. who have experience developing for the community, and their thoughts on it. Both Karen Stevens and Ian Hamilton have accounts on audiogames.net, but i'm not sure as to how active or responsive they may be.

If you do a search on your paper library for audio games, you will get lots of bits and pieces about what you are looking for. There are a ton of news articles posted on the Games_access email list.If you also search google news for blind gamers or audio games, you will find some stuff. It will be a paper looking at how the mainstream community looks at the audio game community. My hypothesis is that the view is that it is a nich market that consists of mostly MUDs.

Re: Stuck in Code 7 with a Muffin puzzle.

I actually stopped playing the second episode for this very reason. I got stuck on the while loops Muffin puzzle and couldn't figure it out no matter what I tried. It wasn't that I didn't understand the concept of while loops, it just seemed that there wasn't enough space for me to type a solution that would work. This was a while back when the second episode was first released, so of course I couldn't find information around to help. I just gave up as a result. There have been puzzles throughout the game that took me a while to wrap my head around, but I enjoy the challenge. This is the first time I've been completely stuck. I'd like to be able to finish the episode at some point since I was initially very excited about buying it.

Re: No flaming: a question for la esquela.

Sorry, didn't read all of the other posts due to the arguing.Carrying your miniature bag, and sweeping and mopping wouldn't be too difficult.Use an Arduino with 2 servos for the wheels, and just do a simple robot car design. This could carry a small bag. Second, you could add in the design street sweepers use for the broom, and use a ultrasound sensor to figure out how close the wall is. Then you can program it to go strait with the broom in front until it reaches a wall, then stop, do something to move the dirt into a dustpan that is under the robot, then turn around and repeat. It probably won't work very well, but it would be fun and fit the project. You will need a couple hundred dollars to spend on parts though, but everything is reusable in future projects. Here is a fantastic site for blind people building with Arduino:http://blarbl.blogspot.com/I would look at:http://blarbl.blogspot.com/2017/08/meet … hield.htmlfor the Grove shield, which is incredible, and:http://blarbl.blogspot.com/2016/01/ardu … s.html?m=1Which is how to upload sketches to your board. If you are in the bay area, join:https://www.meetup.com/Blind-Arduino-Monthly-Meetup/Otherwise email Josh or I about questions you have after following the above guides.Developing with Arduino is not hard, it just takes a bit of yak shaving.Huge hint:For every starter project, just replace the buzzer from the Grove starter kit with the LED. They use similar code to get working, although the buzzer is way more functional, you can play music with it, whereas the LED just shows digital on off states, or analogue step states.

Re: Mailman has been released!

I was able to figure almost everything out. The most cryptic part was the implicit rule of delivering letters. In my opinion, it cannot be logically explained other than "because that's how the world works in this game". What I wanted is adding such "logically unguessable" elements to the readme, just like you have done.Another thing I want to see is the learn game sounds option. We are implicitly associating a sound to a certain physical object in the virtual world while playing audiogames. In order to think and experiment with the game world, we must do it correctly. In other words, knowing what each object is truly opens the opportunity for players to think.Let me raise another example about how to handle pits. I browsed the sounds folder and how files were named. When I heard one of the sounds, I remembered how it was named and guessed what it was. It was associated with a different object in CP, so I couldn't have been correctly get the new usage of that sound without reading the file name. Now I knew what it was. Then, I was able to logically understand that it might be usable to handle pits. Do you get what I mean? Differences between what must be explained and what doesn't have to be.Another option is making tiny bits of information scattered in the game. In this approach, readme doesn't need to be changed and "figuring out the world" consept survives. Plus, players will be able to naturally and gradually get how the world "truly" works, not their guesses that might not be 100% correct and sometimes don't make sense. When we (not necessarily blind persons) buy a console game, what we do first? Read the xxx-page manual? Go to their website and search for accessible version of that manual? Nope. We insert disk, cartridge, or just run the game. And we can play. That's how mainstream games well design what I have just talked. That being said, this game is yours. So, make it as you like. Generally the number of players will follow based on how we handle our releases, but it is still a choice that you do not care about how many players like it.After knowing the mechanics, yeah, that's a challenging game indeed. You've certainly added new strategy to the CP spin-offs!

In other words, knowing what each object is truly opens the opportunity for players to think. That being said, this game is yours. So, make it as you like. Generally the number of players will follow based on how we handle our releases, but it is still a choice that you do not care about how many players like it.

There are a few choices available to you depending on the scale and functions of the robot you have in mind. For this particular project I would recommend Python (disclaimer: I typically recommend Python regardless), since its syntax is easy to use, is versatile and powerful, has been used before in numerous robotics projects, and is supported on the kinds of micro-computers your likely to use, like the Raspberry Pi. If your new to it, try looking up free books like Dive Into Python, the Python Practice Book, or Think Python for the basics, and go from there to more robotics oriented books. You could also end up using the Arduino, but its controller interface is a little more hardware based and uses an off brand variant of C.Now as for the kind of robot, well that depends. An overkill project would be something like the life-sized 3D printed humanoid robot [Inmoov], the leg schematics aren't exactly functional, but you can attach the torso to something like a seguey scooter. Total cost of components and materials is somewhere around 2000$.  Once assembled you can make it do basically whatever you want, pre-program it to mix drinks? Maybe use sign language? Robotic Bartender? Glorified juicer? You get the idea. Now, if your interested in something more practical like an autonomous Drone, you could look into the [Pi0 Drone] for about 200$, which uses a Raspberry Pi Zero micro computer, a 75$'ish flight conrtroller board, and various motors and chassis components, 3D printed or not. There are other drone projects you could look up with regular Raspberry Pi's (like [this]), Arduino's, or others if you like, like RC Cars, for example. I'm reminded of a neato game called [Isotopium Chernobyl] where they built a room scale model of Chernobyl and let people connect to RC Drone vehicles through the internet to drive around in the scale model, pretty cool stuff. For something like mopping or sweeping, your looking at something like a Roomba autonomous vacuum cleaner. There are a few projects around for hacking those things with a Raspberry pi, or maybe [this] project using an arduino based autonomous hacked together vacuum robot. Think abit more on what you have in mind, and we can get a bit more specific on the components and approaches available.

Hmmm, is there a screen reader that you could use on the command line? If so, will it work with the default rraspberry OS? If so, could you just not dump the GUI and just use the command line for everything? Just wondering. If I knew how to get said screen and do away with the GUI, and knew how to make a image, then I might be able to make you said talking image. Of course, I have a raspberry pi 0w that I access over SSH that I am using for my own tasks that requires a computer that I could just shove into a corner and forget.

Re: Two questions regarding recording

2019-10-06 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : turtlepower17 via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Two questions regarding recording

I'm referring to the build quality of the tape player, and the parts used to make it. As i was saying in one of my previous posts, a lot of the tape players and turntables which are fairly cheap these days are geared towards a market that wants to transfer a lot of recordings to their computers. That's why they include a USB connector. The unfortunate side effect of this, however, is that most people who are doing this don't really know or care about how to make decent recordings. To make them cheap enough for the average consumer, they also have to cut a lot of corners in terms of what parts are being used. Since I know more about turntables, I'll give an example of what I'm talking about. Often, these cheap ones have ceramic cartridges, and a crappy stylus that at best will give your records a harsh, unpleasant sound, or at worst, can actually damage them. The build quality also leaves a lot to be desired. They're usually made of a lot of cheap plastic, and don't even get me started about the tiny little speakers that are often built into them. Also, this is just a personal pet peeve of mine, but I really don't understand why a turntable should have tluetooth, that's idiotic to me. You're listening to vinyl for the retro experience, get the hell out of here with that.Don't get me wrong, not every turntable was good back in the day, either, of course, but I've had experience with two of these modern ones, and I wish I hadn't subjected my records to that. I was so happy when I got my hands on an older stereo system from the 80's earlier this summer. It sounds excellent, and still works very well after all these years. Speaking of which, you're actually not taking that much of a risk in obtaining an older device, if that's what you want. Many things were built to last back in those days. You would, of course, have to consider whether the tape player was recently serviced, since the belts are often the first things to degrade in them, but you can easily ask the seller that. Other than that, you can most likely get yourself a unit that's in perfectly good working order, it most likely isn't as difficult as you might think. So, since you're not, I presume, dealing with rare or older tapes that need cleaning up and digitizing, you could probably get away with buying one of these things. It's not a choice I'd personally make, but I imagine that, if you're just using it to record sounds, it would work well enough. I can only assume you'd be hooking an external mic to it anyway, to get the best possible sound, so the possibility of the internal one being crappy might not matter, either.

Honestly, I'm less concerned about the audio quality than just being able to record to tape. Assuming that's the quality you were talking about. Of course there's also the physical quality of the equipment after decades to be taken into consideration, which is a very good point. And getting something that's still in good shape by this point is probably not cheap.I don't really know if deck just refers to all tape recorders, or if it's a specific kind. People always referred to the one I had as a dictaphone, for what that's worth, but surprise surprise, if you try googling that, all you get are digital recorders today.

Re: why developers should port their games to the Mac

I've never been an Apple fan boy, but a big selling point was having voiceover built right into the computer, and not having to spend a grand on Jaws.. I even said in my post from a few days back that Apple's $100 a year charge to developers is a bit harsh when some are not charging for the programs they're developing.. I can still see, and I get to watch TV and movies in HD, I produce music that sounds professional, I like Apple music just fine, and I don't have to take this thing into an IT at all. My Mac does what I need it to, and I'm happy with it.. I believe the more noise that visually impaired Apple users make, the better. For users, and developers. I heard many times that Macs are much more sicure than PCs also. For three years I've had a better experience than I had than the passed 15 or so I had using a PC, but still I'm not waving any Apple flags.. All I'm saying is use what works for you. Don't be upset at others who don't agree with you, because in America they have the right to their own thoughts. I could go back to windows if the issues I had are rectified, and Apple keeps going downhill. What happend to freedom of speech?

Re: Need help with a paper

So, as someone who is at university doing Business, I can tell you that you're going to have a little trouble with this one.the blind community is, comparatively, very small. of that, the gaming community is absolutely tiny.the blind game community probably peaks around 500, which is a sneeze to games like With some games lucky enough to see between 100 and 200 players on during a peak time. Sighted games, especially larger ones, can number as low as 3600 at any one time, and shoot up to, I kid you not, the hundreds of thousands. That's more what you want to focus on, is a comparison between styles, attitudes and sizes, with reference materials pointing at more niche markets, and perhaps a short analysis on how developers could corner this market by appealing to certain areas. That all being said, I just did a quick google on "Article, gaming as a blind person" and got a few promising results.HTH

Do you use any of these three calendar solutions?

Do you use any of these three calendar solutions?

Hi there,So as some of you are aware, I have been slogging through the careful, delicate, frustrating but ultimately rewarding task of building a highly adaptive, easy to use calendar program that combines many solutions into one, beautifully crafted end result. As part of the end product, it will combine google calendar, outlook calendar, and iCloud calendar into one solution, with options to choose which calendars, within those, are synced, and so on and so forth.I won't go into too much detail about features, because that is not really relevant to this topic.I am posting this because I am looking for people who use google calendar, outlook calendar or iCloud calendar and have a familiarity with the options it has available and common things you do with it.I, much to my dismay, meet none of these requirements, though I am learning slowly. For this reason, I am ultimately looking for testers who fit the following requirements:1. Use one of the above solutions.2. Are able to bug test with at least some degree of accuracy.3. Are able to give constructive feedback.4. Are able to communicate clearly through email or skype text. (No voice chatting).5. Are able to work discretely, (no pre release versions for public consumtion). If you think you would be able to do this, please get in touch with me.Testing is no where near ready yet, and we're looking at a timeline of probably a month, if not a month and a half, before I would be confident enough to say yes, lets turn this over to testing, but even so, I'd love to have, at least by then, a list of posssibles. So do get in touch if you can help, feature requests, related to the above solutions, or otherwise related, are welcome, as well.https://nathantech.net/contact to get in touch. Thanks!

Vocalizer Nathan does question marks, but not exclamation marks. Honestly this is what happens when you go strictly off of speech units and have limited text preprocessing. I think NV Speech Player was trying to rectify that situation creating a cross between Dectalk and Espeak, but unfortunately NV Access abandoned the project and just made a modified espeak variant off of it with Speech Player's artifacts.

Re: Mailman has been released!

Americranian, I'm afraid my chess analogy still holds true. All of your beginner chess players, so to speak, are Crazy Party players. You assume that either 1. the only people who will like this game are Crazy Party players who ought to know a little of what they're doing, or 2. everybody plays Crazy Party. Both assumptions are fallacious. Therefore, your average player may indeed be a beginner chess player, but they may not be either. You won't know until or unless they really start getting frustrated when you start telling them their moves don't work.Let me put this another way, and dispense with the analogy for now. You make a lot of assumptions, it seems, and most of them are wrong or unverifiable. These hurt your credibility. Why, for instance, would you assume that everyone plays Crazy Party? Just to put a nail in that coffin, I don't. I actually am among a smallish group of people who ultimately does not like CP's minigames. I think they are an excellent way to ruin keyboards, and I find the grind for coins pointless when coins...uh, kind of don't do anything. At least the battle mode requires the sort of strategy I like. Now obviously, lots of people like the minigames in CP, and power to them, but it's not for me, personally. But why would you deliberately limit your audience to those who enjoy CP? A better question: if you're not assuming everyone plays or likes CP, then why are you treating everyone as if they have knowledge that they may not in fact have? That's just backward.I recognize that you don't want to spoil everything and that you do want some exploration and figuring out on one's own to be part of the way the game works. I can respect that. But the clear consensus is that you're not doing enough, so if you are going to sit down and try to explain things a little better, this is a really excellent time to do it.You'll note that I said you still have the time and the ability to turn this around. I believe it; wouldn't have said it if I didn't. I'm underwhelmed by the first impression I've gotten from you, but the beauty of first impressions is that they can be fixed in time. You owe me nothing in this case, but I do hope you get stuff together. Now, as far as your question, let me help with that.I find there are three levels of game knowledge overall. I'll rank them from lowest to highest.1. What the hell is going on?Players know very little of what to do or how to do it. They also don't know what to expect. They may be capable of learning, but the first little while is going to feel like hitting one's head against a wall while one dies or loses over and over. To me personally, this is insanely frustrating. Other players appear to feel the same way. Not absolutely everybody hates this, but if you insist on it too much, it will send some players away long before they gain enough skill rr knowledge to get to whatever it is that makes your game worthwhile. That entry barrier I spoke of in my last post is very high, and if players don't break it, then you've lost them.2. Okay, let's see how to do this betterThe player is armed with the basics of gameplay and set loose. They should understand at least entry-level mechanics. They may explore or experiment and die a lot, but they're doing so because there's a point to it...or because they think there is. A lot of MUDs do this really well (Alter Aeon being a bad example, actually). They'll, say, give you starter gear, a map or two and some basic quests, help you get around the first few areas, then basically say "Okay, you're on your own". Players are given the tools to succeed but not hand-held in how they use those tools. A lot of players (self included) like this. The more complex or frenetic a game is, the more this matters. Entry barrier is middling to low, so while one might find frustration with a few repeated failures, one has the idea that with persistence, it will get better. In short, there is a sense of progress, even from failure. It doesn't feel so random; we're not just throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks. To me, at least, and to many players I've spoken to over the years, this is the sweet spot.3. What's the point? This is the other end of the spectrum. You have told the player absolutely everything, and either they're gaming the system hard because they're pros, or else they think the system is too weird/overcomplicated without even playing. These games are the sort which tell you every keystroke, provide a cheat code or two to make gameplay easier, warn you about every big surprise and mechanic, and try to give you optimal strategies for success. I actually feel that Alter Aeon does this for a large part of its early game, really hand-holds newbies by making the first eighteen levels or so ridiculously easy, and then just sort of yanks the security blanket. Other games which do this to some extent would include A Hero's Call (which despite nasty exploration issues gives you lots of

Alright, let's continue."First off, not everyone has the time nor inclination to figure things out with little to no documentation."No disagreement there, this game is not for everyone."The attitude I'm seeing from the dev is that the people who are doing the thing as they'd expect are good little lab rats, and the ones that are not are just frustrating."Excuse me? Where did I say that you, the royal you, are frustrating to me? I made the game because I enjoy making games. I released the game because I wanted you all to enjoy the new twist on the mechanics that I made. Hell, I was in the process of sitting down and writing down exactly what each grid did with some tips as to how to play the game. You know why, ironcross? Because I, despite what you may think of me now, care. I want to have players. I have explained earlier that the earlier issue was miscommunication, to which you promptly have closed your eyes and continued stating that I do not care about anybody besides whomever is playing the game correctly. Post 27's words, "the mentality of I'm always right" doesn't help anyone. What is it in my posts that sets you off?I wrote this:"See, and this frustrates me as well. Why are some people able to figure this out and others aren't? What's so different about the way people approach this game?"That was a genuine question. I want to know how people approach this. I want to know the thought process behind somebody trying things out because I may want to redo the same "figure things out" concept in the future. The quote above doesn't mean "God those people who can't figure the game out are idiots and those who can play my game are amazing", it means "I am frustrated with the way this game was received because I overlooked the many different ways one's brain may function and am looking for feedback as to why my approach didn't work."Nyanchan and Stevo have raised excellent points, one about the mailboxes and one about pointing to oh shit's cryptic bit of info at the start. I am doing my best to take their knowledge and use it to further this project. You, on the other hand, have contributed little to the development process, and constantly badger me about my attitude. If my attitude is horrendous, show it to me, don't just say it's crappy. Explain your position, don't just state it."I can say from their attitude and presentation, I'll probably never try another game they make unless it gets a hell of a lot better reception."That is your choice. Like I said, until you show me exactly where I'm going wrong, I can't improve and frankly, won't listen to you.

Re: The Rpg Tools Pack, a small set of Bgt Includes.

Hi all!Yes, I'm still working on this, but am facing difficulties because I have nowhere to host, because github gives me audio challenges that won't show up!I'm continuing to try to fix it, but in the mean time, still know that I am working on this and willing to take suggestions and critisisms.I have recently started indenting, maybe a little bit because of your guys' points, which are correct.I've switched the readme to a much more well layed out html file, and cleaned up the function explaanations.I've continued work on the object classes, and are working my way towards releasing that.A few more menu functions are added.@Ironcross: Could you give a few points that you don't like about the way I coded parts of this? @ironcross: What do you mean things aren't in functions? There isn't any main loops in this code, and everything is split into tiny, quick use functions to make things a lot easier. If you think I overdid it with the functions then please explain, but for right now, I don't understand where your coming from.Mr. Ironcross wrote:A lot of the BGT code I've seen is just horrible. Now, I have never got closed source stuff, but the things I've seen just... bleh. And I won't pretend to be something I'm not and sit here and act like I'm some hot shot programmer but... No classes, or use of includes and no user written classes. No organizing code into functions where it would make sense to do so. I.e. everything is just in the main loop, where I might create a function to grab input, put that in the loop, then one for checking for collisions, and another for updating the sound pool. You also have no, and I do mean no indenting. So the code is just nasty, messy, and way to drawn out and not efficient.Thank you for reading and have a good day!

Milos and All,I've placed the command reference in the zip file. It can also be found here in the DropBox. I added a bit of clarification to some of the more confusing bits of the UI, but it's 90% the same text as the game help. Incidentally, I also discovered how to redirect ships in-flight, which was a thing I had previously wondered about. My previous games haven't reached the level where deep space communications was possible.

Re: Mailman has been released!

I had written earlier after post 54 but decided not to post it. I think I will re-write it now due to 55's attitude.First off, not everyone has the time nor inclination to figure things out with little to no documentation. The fact that some people are doing this is great, the fact that others are not is fine as well. The attitude I'm seeing from the dev is that the people who are doing the thing as they'd expect are good little lab rats, and the ones that are not are just frustrating. Excuse me, but that's just rude and condescending.I play games for fun, if it's fun for me, I play it. If not, I will set it aside. I think people are generally in agreement with that statement. What is fun for some is not for others, and vise versa. But for the dev to be in here and talking down to us because of our preferences is bullshit in my opinion. As a developer, I can understand the fact that you'd want to make a game you'd actually play. So, you'll get people who will want to play it, because the genre and content align with what they like, but you'll have others that won't want to play it. I was actually excited about this game until I spent some time with it, then saw it for what it was. And again, if people are cool with this, fine, so be it, play it and have a good time. But don't try to invalidate our concerns and feelings about the game, especially the dev. I can say from their attitude and presentation, I'll probably never try another game they make unless it gets a hell of a lot better reception. I tried this one without letting the rest of the thread influence me, and it just wasn't a good fit for me.

From the JAWS Tandem quick start guide: "For Tandem Direct sessions (typically used by corporations within a network) there is a charge for any computer that acts as a controller such as a help desk."Wow, just wow! So connections using the Tandem Center server are free, but to run a peer to peer session you need to pay them even more money? WTF? Wouldn't it be the other way around since it costs money and resources to run a central server like that? The greed of this company is appalling! Here are your options as I see them. You can either use Tandem Center which is free, or pay I don't know how much money for the privilege to host peer to peer sessions. It might also require JAWS Professional.

Ah, TrueVoice. I always found that synth's reaction to exclamation marks to be pretty hilarious. Interestingly enough, some versions of it actually reacted more subtly to the exclamation mark, and the rather over the top reaction may have been added later. And I think you're referring to the SAPI 5 version of Microsoft Sam? It also seems like Sam, Mike and Mary tried to guess where the the rise in pitch should be, though they seemed to fail most times.

I don't remember actually when exactly it happened, I was 12 or 14 years old since I started to pay attention to programming and I knew that in our school there is a programming language called Pascal. So the first program I wrote was that adds two integers together and prints the result and also compares them both and says which is the greater one or both them are equal. If we're talking about something real, then one of the first programs was an atempt to make a snake game. I loved it because it was my first game, but it never grew up, Snake just always was constructed from one peace only and you needed to walk around the rectangular map and collect the fruits that were made of char(219) and if you touch the border, you dead. When you collect the fruit, snake starts to walk quicker than before...
