Some backround so i can read tom clancy

Hello everyone. Years ago i tried to read patriot games by tom clancy. I didn’t understand the conflicts between the irish, english, and welsh or the politics that goes along with it. For those of you who might not know patriot games is about an attempt to kidnap the prince and princess of wales and it’s aftermath.  I live in america and have a pretty good grasp on american history, but i’m not too knowledgeable about the history of other countries. I would really like to start reading tom clancy but i think i’m in over my head, since the book was written in the 1980s before i was born so whatever went on i didn’t go through. . If you have read this book or know the history could you give me some backround so i can read this novel properly and understand it?

Re: Yet another Say The Spire video!

I'd appreciate it. If you've seen the other ones some over all feedback would be good too, I mean in terms of it being a worthwhile demo. You know, you've got this thing and it's installed and running, now what do you do with it? I tried not to go super detailed with basics because I figured that was covered pretty well in the readme and the forum here. But if anybody has ways they think it could be improved, aside from the audio which is a bit rough but I don't think I'd redo them all just for that, or anything I'm missing, I'd love to hear it. What I got out of the Say The Spire threads was that people wanted a demo of how the controls worked, you know how you use a controller to navigate and play the game. So that's what I tried to focus on.

Re: where has this community gone to

@ignatriay: This is, a very valid criticism which is rare within this thread - to be expected, I suppose.You're absolutely right, the premature warning was probably overkill. I would not have even made it to that stage, however, if he hadn't mentioned that he wanted the mac OS but didn't want to buy it. You can't have your cake and eat it too in this cas,e because even if he were ignorant of the specific license terms set forth, a little common sense goes a long way. If it's software that you have to buy a device to obtain, and there is no way to download it for free (even as an evaluation) then wouldn't it make sense that you kind of can't work around that without facing trouble?It's easy to tell when someone is playing with fire and I got the feeling that he was. If he had literally just said he wanted a Mac vm, I would have been happy to give a little benefit of the doubt, inform him it isn't possible because reasons, and leave it at a caution. But no, instead he revealed a little too much of his intentions for it to stay at a cautionary phase. When we say intent will be taken into account, we do mean that literally.

Re: where has this community gone to

I just have to say that half the people on this thread could probably run a forum.  You know why we don't?  Because whoever runs the forum will have to put up with some variant of this thread for whatever the unpopular decision of the day is, repeatedly.  I've thought about doing it, not because of the mods but because this site has a limited lifetime before the fact that no one is running the servers causes an issue, but then threads like this remind me why it's just not worth it--much better to be a participant, rather than have an obligation to try to manage these.In the general case audiogames.net isn't enforcing Apple's license, it's doing something that a majority of other forums have done for a long time, namely disallowing piracy.  Given that we have had a mac vm thread every 2 weeks for as long as I can remember, and that many of them have even gone as far as "you can't discuss this here, but we're not making a judgement call wink wink try google wink wink", anyone who has been very active on the forum hasn't got much of a leg to stand on when it comes to going down that road.  Simter has certainly been active enough for that, and I could have sworn that I've seen other places on here where they've been involved in such threads.

You can adjust parameters like head size, ear angle, head shadow, and the speed of sound. WadJS only has a stock HRTF.syngen has a virtualized mixer with a built-in master effects chain. In WadJS you would need to build this yourself with a chain of PolyWads.syngen has a global reverb send with a configurable impulse response and filtering. Re: Question about lexing

@9This is a pretty standard college assignment, it's just been something like 7 years since I did it.  If you want to do the FSM approach, you need a class with roughly the following interface:class Reader {
char next();
char peak();
};Then you split your states up like this:none to identifier if next() is a letter
none to numeric if next() is a digit
identifier to none if next() is whitespace, and finalize identifier token
numeric to integer if next() is whitespace, and finalize token
numeric to double if next() is a .
double while next() is a digitOr along those lines.  That's not entirely correct but it gets the idea across.  If you make each of the states a function with a loop that just proceeds until it can tell which state it needs to go to next, this does decompose.  You use peak when you might need to decide without consuming a character, next to consume a character, and push to a stack of char until you can build the string.  As I said though, yes, this is terrible to code.  It's actually not very complicated, it's just a *lot* of manual work with a lot of little spots to miss a detail.All those lexer tools basically give you this.  The parser generation is more complicated but a basic tokenizer at the lowest level is along the lines of the above.  SO is the internal guts of a regex engine as well.I think the question you're actually asking--though you may not know it--is what is the professor trying to teach?  As opposed to how should I code this, I mean.  It sounds to me like your professor may be doing a poor job covering the material.  The above isn't the way you're "supposed" to do it, but in terms of the sorts of abstractions and things that you want to see at the lowest level, or when talking about this stuff in an actual science context, it always ends up looking like the above, or a slightly different variant of it where you can rewind the stream instead of being able to look ahead by some (usually fixed) number of characters.

@4CMake does C, C++, and some Objective-C.  You can get it integrating with other languages if you try as well, but it's not convenient.Building large projects in native languages effectively takes a programming language of its own.  What CMake does is takes a cross-platform description of your project, roughly "I use these files, compile with this level of optimization and I'm C++20" etc, and converts it into something the compilers on that platform can understand.Pointers are more fundamental than just being useful for some things, but you'll probably have to wait until you've coded in C and taken the class to get it some.  Python and many other languages just offer higher level abstractions over it, and don't ask you to be explicit about whether something is being passed around by value (copied) or by reference (pointed at).  For example in Python everything is actually passed around as a pointer under the hood, and the fact that you can't modify an int from anywhere is actually just that ints don't have functions that let you modify them, only get copies.For example, strings in any language, C or not, are done by asking the OS for some memory to put characters in, putting characters in it, and keeping the pointer around.  It's just hidden from you in most of them.  Pointers themselves are actually just integers that correspond to some cells in the ram in your computer, basically.  It's not actually a feature of C.  It's a feature of the CPU that everything uses, and which C exposes by virtue of being at a low level, low enough that C doesn't hide details.  People used to call C cross-platform assembly, and that's still sort of true: you can no longer look at a C program and figure out what the assembly would be in your head, but it exposes access to (almost) everything assembly sees.Though your school maybe doesn't see it this way, the point of a C class nowadays is that C teaches you how everything you take for granted works.  Don't expect usefulness, expect knowledge.  Probably 75% of Python is tons of pointers.  C++ is more useful for most unless you're going into embedded, as most new stuff that needs to be written at a native level on desktops uses it.  It's possible to get a dayjob in C--I have one--but in general don't view this as something you're ever going to want to write software in because the cases when you'd actually want to do that almost never come up.

Frankly my feelings in this are mixed. Jack wrote,@staticmaster: Per Apple's license, you cannot run a Mac virtual machine if you do not own the physical hardware. If you were to, for example, create installation media from your own mac and run it on your own time, then sure, but you cannot then go distributing it. Likewise, if you yourslef don't own the hardware, you also do not own a license for Mac OS. Short answer is no. This is a warning. I get the explanation, but a warning at that stage seems... uh, maybee too harsh? I mean, if the individual have had passed history of doing something like this, then I would get the warning, but it seems a bit too much. I mean, when you take into account that this could have been asked do to ignorance of the license terms, and let's be honest, iif you don't own a apple product, or any other product...  Why would you go and look up the license, if you've never owned the product of said license in the first place? On the other hand,static master wrote,hay guys. so I was going to use the nvda addon that bridges between a mac OS and windows. since I don't have in uf to buy a mac, o you guys have any virtual machines with voice over enabled that I can use? I really want to use the alex tts voice, and amung other things, I wish to have a mac so I can do other mac related stuff with out having to actualy buy one.I kinda get why the you thought the warning was warranted, if one where to analyze the post closely; I really, really do; but again. Going back to the question, if you don't own x product, why go and search for the license, when you don't own said product in the first place? I mean, this is the mindset of many. If i'm not affected by so and so... why bother? I do feel though, that a caution would've have been a bit more appropriate at this stage, especially given the what follows. Static master wrote,I am sorry, I didnt know if asking these things are permittable. I was going to buy a mac and thought I will not deel with all of this hassel so I thought i am gonna have a virtual macheen though. guess i will buy one and make it into a virtual machine if my brain functions correctly then.Again, mixed feelings on this as well. While the first part of the post says that he didn't know, intention; the second part says that he'll buy a mac and do it that way... That was... I mean he kinda dug himself into a hole there. And if one looks at this from the mod's point of view, supports the warning. If he had left it at, i'm sorry and that's it; a warning would've been overkill, but saying i'm sorry but then contradictions himself with, i'll buy a mac and do it that way... Oops. I mean, that kinda supports the warning.   At this point, I feel the warning was given... too prematurely. I mean, this would've been better handled if the decision of a warning or caution    would've waited until this post, and then, action taken. I mean, even at this point the warning was... too much. A caution should've sufficed, at least; for the first post, where he asked about the vm. On the second one where he dug himself into a proverbial hole after apologizing... That, I feel, is when the warning might have been given. But after the first post? That was... Too much to quickly. As far as simpter's ban... I mean I'll be blunt, he kinda pushed too far, despite direct contrary evidence shown in front of his face. People; and more than one, I might add; quoted the apple license and... no dice; he kept pushing it, despite all evidence going against him... I mean, he was asking for it at that point.In the end, While I disagree with the warning and how quickly it was given; as I said before a caution should've come first after the first post; not a straight up warning as was given. I mean, waiting until the other party had a chance to explain himself and then deciding on a further course of action would've been better. I mean, he would've gotten warned anyway. But I feel the warning just after his first post was jumping the gun.

Re: Question about lexing

@8, I'm not even sure how I'd write the really big state machines of doom by hand. I prefer PEGs to be honest; they make writing the grammar a lot easier. I don't know why my professor wants me to write the lexer and parser by hand; presumably it makes it easier for us to learn the concepts he teaches, but I generally find that it makes it a lot harder and adds unnecessary complexity. Plus, few people are going to write lexers and parsers by hand. They're either going to use PEGs, parser combinators, or lexer/parser generation tools. I know that Clang uses a handwritten lexer but they're parsing C/C++/Objective-C/Objective-C++ so no surprise there.The difficulty of writing the state machine by hand is that I'll be able to parse keywords and identifiers, but I can't parse floats (I tried it earlier and messed it up really badly, which is why I said above that I don't even know how I'd actually do that properly).

Re: is it just me, or has discord changed

Are we sure we are talking about one version of discord? I have 0.0.308, and everything reads well there, I checked it again. And the list of private messages in the header of private messages, as it was before, and a tree view, where there are no links on the same line with this list, which made navigation even more convenient, because you do not need to press ins + space, and the list of servers in this tree is loaded even faster. True, for some reason in the list of changes the last changes from September 30th. Is this normal, or is it just me?

Re: If you were a manamon. Which one would you be?

Hmmm.  As for me, I'd probably be one of the canine based Manamon, probably Boybul/Bayowoof or Mutmo or one of its transformations.  Plus, there's also Houndorf/Frenrir as well.  Though, I also like Leefox and its transformational line as well.  I guess it'd come down to what would I like to do more, be good with Standard or Ice type or Magic or Flame type attacks or be kinda ok with plant/Earth type stuff.  I'd say that being something like a Mutmo offers more possibilities than anything else, though Boybul's cuteness factor would probably cause me to be more likely to be picked up by a randomly wandering trainer, assuming that this were to happen in the Manamon world/universe.  If it were to happen here, I'd probably just go with being something that at least had hands or could use its magic to manipulate things like the keys on a computer keyboard so as to be able to communicate effectively with people...  So, if I were to somehow transform in a version of the real world, I'd probably go with Elvond.

Well, in the case of the coronavirus at least, the strategy of "do everyting Trump didn't do" works like a fucking miracle, because Trump did virtually nothing and then threw in the towel after congratulating himself.So if I were president of a country, I'd work to keep my citizens safe. Now, if my previous president had already done that? Different question. At that point I'd start working really, really hard on electoral reform.

Re: Vast Horizon (new game)

Lol, y'all have one, at least IDK, has anyone confirmed it works, I had one person tell me it didn't, but they didn't really give me enough to go on to track it down. Actually, in the latest CM, they aren't releasing the ZIP format, and I detest multiple installations of the thing as it doesn't play nice with finding plugins, as it encounters the first registry key and thinks that's valid for them all. But in such a case, it would be less problematic until the proper end release. That means I may actually have to build mushclient from source to get a suitable bundle I can package up.I still have to fix all of the triggers I've done thus far... I am not looking forward to it. At least I didn't make it worse. At least it's only around 40 and not 500. Yeah next time I'll back up the damn file before I go running regular _expression_ powered search/replace on it.

Re: A few question about C.

2020-11-03 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : amerikranian via Audiogames-reflector

Re: A few question about C.

Camlorn as usual provides an excellent explanation. My only bit to add is look here for a lot more where your questions come from. Yes, I was stupid and needed quite a bit more explanation and clarification.To sort of tone it down and expand upon Camlorn's point, let's say that we are trying to get input from the user.int get_user_input() {
printf("Enter an integer");
int user_input = 0;
scanf("%d", _input);
return user_input;
}The problem with this code is that I have no way of telling the caller that the user decided to be dumb and enter a string (because we all do that). So, without pointers, we're stuck. We can't return two values from a function. Typing return [1, 2]; would be a really bad idea if it works, which I don't think it would.So, pointers to the rescue. A pointer is just that, something which, uh, points to the memory where a variable is located. We can pass that something around to literally anything with virtually zero cost. Furthermore, pointers allow you to edit stuff that is declared outside of their function without forcing the other function to return. So, our input code becomes something like this:int get_user_input(int *var) {
printf("Enter an integer");
scanf("%d", var);
return 1; //Function succeeded
}In reality, you would do your error checking before returning, but you get the gist.If you do not know why I left out the and operator or why I used a star operator in the function, I suggest reading up on pointer operators, but here's a very brief rundown. //Retrieves memory address of var, equivalent to doing something like this:
int var = 2;
int *pVar =
*var; //dereferences var, i.e:
int var = 2;
int *pVar =
printf("The value of var is %d", *pVar);Pointers are also useful for dynamic memory allocation. In C, declaring an array of size 10 makes it an array of 10 integers forever. You cannot change it. However, if you use pointers, you can declare virtually unlimited arrays, I say virtually because your computer memory is technically finite. As Camlorn pointed out, you must use the malloc function for this:int *pIntArray = malloc(sizeof(int) * 10);Allocates an array of 10 integers.You must know that for every malloc or any other memory-reserving function there must also be a call present for freeing that memory. Going back to the previous example, you must free pIntArray sometime before your program finishes its execution or it goes out of scope (Whichever comes first). Failure to do so results in a memory leek, which is hard to find in most instances.In general, I think it would be fair to say that even if you learn pointers, you will have a hell of a time building anything in C. There is a reason why people don't use it everywhere. Just relax and don't feel pressured to release the next block buster with it, I would hate for my computer to explode, LOL.

For every speak function call, if I just do a global search/replace so it says ac.log("stuff") rather than speak("stuff"), it does work. That's of course if I comment out the import line for my speak module. Now, having a working app, just adding back the import line causes it to die. The game fails to load it, and that's the crux of the issue, trying to figure out how to get it to import.I can see that it failed by OCRing the game's console, then verify it by opening the main log file. When the code is working, minus the speak import and logging, I can open the log file specifically for python stuff and all the data I'm collecting thus far is there.

That was the most tame I've seen him in a while. Also, he never said he didn't care about the watch, and is that really a reason to ban someone, because they don't care about something?I don't agree with him saying the watch was done just to shut him up. He was being more than a nuisance for far too long, and he deserved that watch. In fact, I think he should have been banned at that point in time, but now, for that? Meh, it's stupid.The mods are seeing that they have power of us because no one will make another site, like actually make a proper go of it. They're pulling more and more bullshit by the day. All the warnings in that thread, were to an extent unfounded. At the end of the day simter did nothing, in the bounds of the rules, did nothing, wrong. He asked a question, maybe was uptone, but still. Also, why didn't they just caution Static Master, instead of an all out warn? Have we forgotten about cautions, only when its convenient to the mods?

Yes, I was stupid and needed quite a bit more explanation and clarification.In general, I think it would be fair to say that even if you learn pointers, you will have a hell of a time building anything in C. There is a reason why people don't use it everywhere. Just relax and don't feel pressured to release the next block buster with it, I would hate for my computer to explode, LOL.

Very first thing I'd do in the current climate:I'd make sure that any health care options in my country were stable and could not be tossed out. I'd make sure that national testing was available, that national contact tracing was set up. I'd model good behaviour by wearing masks and asking my staff to do the same. I'd listen to science.Right here and now, my first push would be to get the virus under control.

Re: where has this community gone to

Yeah the warning you got was complete bullshit in my opinion. It was the first time you'd ever asked such a thing that I've ever seen. Jayde is always talking about how intent gets factored in, well it wasn't in this case. Ignorance of the license terms may not be an adequate defense if you breach them with the company, but it sure as shit shouldn't land you a warning on your first offense.I'm getting fed up with this slap happy approach the mods are taking. I'm believing less and less of what they say on the daily as well. And this bad faith shit? Fuck that. Now that's going to be used to justify any punitive action taken. I see it coming. This place is turning into a big government sort of operation. You are always being watched, and you have to fear asking questions. The mods are tearing down a community that's been around for 15 years and all because they can't step back and look at the bigger picture. Honestly, at this point, they're all just as guilty, if not by action, by association, and they all should be ashamed of how they've been running this place.

I have never personally experienced anything quite like this. The closest I had was being out past my depth in a wave-pool and being towed to safety by a classmate. Even then, I wasn't anywhere near drowning. I love water, love to swim, but drowning - i.e., you're in a sub, it breaks open, and you're two hundred feet below the water and have to fight your way to the surface...well, let's say it terrifies the ever-loving snot out of me.I can't imagine what this must have felt like. I commend you for toughing it out, thinking quickly and doing what you could to stay alive. The ocean is a lovely biome and a wonderful part of our environment, but it's also prodigiously powerful and sometimes capricious. Hundreds of thousands have drowned, some within easy sight of shore. I'm very, very glad you weren't among that number.If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know.

Stumped Making a Mod

2020-11-03 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : ironcross32 via Audiogames-reflector

Stumped Making a Mod

OK, here's the deal. I've been trying to get a mod going in Assetto Corsa to speak some info, like speed, current gear, and hopefully more at some point. There's information enough to put together something, and even an app template someone made. The problem comes into place when I start to add speech to the equation.I'm using Cytolk for this. I copy the package over to the mod directory under another dir called third_party. This seems to be a common practice. I've spent the past damn near 4 hours trying various things with no luck.First I started out with everything in one file. Then I created a module called speak in the third_party directory. Speak imports cytolk and inside the speak.speak() function, it checks if tolk is loaded, if so, nothing, if not loads it. There's stuff in there for falling back to sapi if needed. Then in __del__(), it unloads tolk.I can use this just fine from the interpreter.from third_party.speak import speak
speak("This is a test message.")Doing this, it speaks just fine. Now, here is some structure of the python file needed to create an app. You have the following imports: sys, ac, and acsys. These are just for the normal operation of an app. Then you have to define acMain(), acShutdown(), and acUpdate().In acShutdown(), I delete speaker. In acMain() it's just some setup stuff. In acUpdate() is where local variables are compared against globals to determine what to speak.If all of the pieces of the puzzle fit together, i.e. I am having the app log the stuff to a file using ac.log(), the last piece is getting cytolk to import. Or, now that I've moved that stuff into speak, getting that to import. I just... cann, not, fucking, figure it the hell out.The debug info you get with the game is fucking stupid half the time. It gets slightly better if there's a problem further in and all the imports work without fail. Since I have to open the game each time, I pass it through pylint to catch any syntax errors before launching.I've tried using sys.path.insert(0, "path-to-directory") to place it there. Basically, I don't know what the hell is going on and I'm sure it's a me thing.I tried like countless shit and now my brain is basically mush. I don't know if the game just simply can't import outside modules, though I kind of doubt it. Searching for this specific issue turns up nothing but dead ends. But I wonder if it's just me not understanding a general python concept of what it wants to find as far as path structure. Any help would be appreciated at this point. Hell, the code didn't even take that long to write, it's just been like about 4 hours trying to get the god damn speech imported.

If you are at a really low point, please talk with someone; we are sad to see your spirit broken. If things aren't too personal, pm me, or anyone else, or to everyone.If you are just disgusted with the forum, I understand that. But don't make it more toxic on purpose please.

I think that there was no point to starting this thread and that, anything else aside, anyone who even contemplates mac vms for 30 seconds knows that they're not legal irregardless of what the license might say.  And you definitely do if you got as far as googling "how to make a mac vm".  I'm not going to read all the links.  That's not really necessary here.But to answer the click bait title as opposed to what the thread is actually about, this community went to the special hell reserved for communities where when mods take action against blatantly illegal things that everyone knows are illegal, somehow it's the mods being mean about it and acting in bad faith and then let's debate whether mac vms are actually legal or whatever, time to figure out who gets the magic piracy passport.

Re: Question about lexing

2020-11-03 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Question about lexing

I probably can't help much on the C++ specifics.  I avoid C++ unicode handling like the plague, so much so that I would literally choose another language over C++ if it was the primary part of the project I'm working on.  They made a lot of fundamentally bad choices there, and are unique as compared to literally anyone else doing unicode strings which just says "ok everyone, have some utf8".  So if it's a bug there, you're on your own.  Yes, I get there's probably some justifications, they probably even make some sense, but that doesn't make it any less horrible.  Mind you to be honest I avoid all the standard streams stuff and just use printf as well.  In general it's something C++ badly botched.  But I digress.  Though see my note at the bottom.Your other C++ point: std::variant is efficient, or should be assumed to be.  It's a tagged union.  The equivalent you might right by hand won't be smaller, unless you're trying to avoid the tagged part of that and know which type it is somehow else.As for the regexes, you need to turn your loop around.  Anchor the regex to the beginning of the string, then (as pseudocode), it's:while text remaining:
if match identifier:
chop identifier
if match number:
chop numberAnd so on.  You can modify the regex to anchor to the beginning of the string by prepending ^, or there might possibly be something in C++ for it.  I'm not sure what your professor is thinking with respect to giving you regexes for integer and float: I suggest that you always match float, and then determine if it's an integer after the fact by examining the string.But, two things:First, did you check with the professor to make sure that you're allowed to do it this way?  The integer vs float thing is a classical lookahead sort of thing that a regex can't easily solve but which writing this the giant finite state machine of doom way can.Second, you might as well drop anything at all to do with unicode.  In addition to the points about C++ generally botching it, unicode regex is sort of not a thing.  It's technically possible in theory, but in practice I'm pretty sure that std::regex isn't.  We're actually trying to do that at work right now because reasons I think aren't public yet, and people who make me look like a junior consider it a massive problem, a potentially entirely unsolvable one.  When you've got the guy on the team who is hand-writing magic utf8 encoders and decoders for the purposes of being able to store both unicode data and arbitrary binary blobs in the same on-disk format saying this isn't something we can solve in reasonable effort...well, that kind of speaks for itself.  There's additional work complexities there, it is technically doable in the general case, but in general I'd just not bother for college assignments unless it's been mandated because even in the general case it's pretty involved.
