Re: questions for blind people who live in Germany

Mostly what Honk said... .Although the situation which was described is not specific to the blind. Germans tend to care more for themselves. Its this harder-to-become-friends-but-friends-for-life thing.College in germany really depends on the university you're going to visit. My universities did alot and took care of all the necessities, but I also know of universities which don't care at all, or at least the professors don't.The law is great though, you'll get financial support by design if you're blind, means that you'll get a financial income as soon as you're living in germany and you're blind, the amount depending on in which state you're living.

@mechaSkyGuardian:Two things here:Don't take any advice from people on this forum or actually any forum out there for that matter. People are dumb and you don't want to build an opinion on that. Look for actual official information about this. There are specialized organizations who inform you about college abroad. And second... Germany is a first world country with quite a few anti discrimination laws baked into the states constitution. Also due to the work that mostly war blind have done after WW2 especially the blind and visually impaired have a strong lobby here as well. So I believe for being blind Germany is actually one of the better countries out there. The law at least treats us pretty well.On the social side it depends where you live. I think if you come from USA you will find that people are less forthcoming in general. The few experiences I had in America were that people seemed to approach me much more readily than in Germany. That might be a problem for you but it also might not be a blind thing. The college system ... well ... works. Not a sliver as expensive as in USA and with the Bachelor/Master system you don't really have huge international differences in education level at that point. Probably 80% or more of the college students in Germany will at least speak enough English to have a normal conversation with you. German though is a fucking hard language to learn and hard to practice because most people here would rather like to speak English with you instead There are mainly two universities in Germany who are specialized on working with blind people. The one in Karlsruhe and the one in Marburg. They are usually the ones people get recommended because both have a strong and well established institution run by and for the rights of people with disabilities. Not totally sure how well other universities cope with disabilities but I don't think it would be an insurmountable problem for them. And jobs... Well, you can get a job as a blind person in Germany. There are also a couple laws in place to even out the odds a little. Companies get extra state founds if they employ people with disabilities. Still, it is harder than for normal people. Probably not nearly as hard as in other countries though. I'm only guessing here though.

Hi.For a while, I hadn't read braille since May. Ever since I got my Touch + two weeks ago, I've been using braille a lot more and have realized the convenience of it.Up until getting my Touch, the closest I ever got to using braille was Braille Screen Input on iOS and reading a sign here or there. I'm using Braille Screen Input on iOS to type this post right now.I find it easier to stay engaged with a book when it's being read to me, but I am considering reading the next book I'm going to start in Braille. I won't do The Tower of Nero in braille though because I've gotten used to the narrator and have an idea for how the voices sound, so it would be hard to do that one in braille

I'm with 6, 7 and 8. I like reading and playing text games in braille because silence is golden after a noisy day, and i can have my imagination take over.Has anyone spent so much time listening to an audiobook narrated by a male, but latwr on when the words of a female character echo in your head after youre done with the book, but you can only hear it in the author's voice? To me that is awkward, which is also why i prefer braille, so i can imagine the voices myself and get it right. And yes, braille helps so much with math!

yes,  that is what your supposed to do. You wait for the Sequence and then you repeat it. Don't worry, it might seem easy at first, but oh boy is gets  incredibly hard, just wait and see.  Also, I'd suggest you enable auto-Steering so you don't have to worry about that when you are racing.Regards,Shinobi

Man I feel pretty dumb right now. I downloaded the Sequence Storm demo. I'm in the tutorial. I get past the "here's what buttons we're using" stuff. Then I get to the thing that's two kick hits, two claps, and two snares. I keep messing it up. Are you supposed to follow each thing, e.g. it claps and you hit the clap button? Are you waiting until the sequence of each thing is done and then repeating it? Trying that seems to mess me up pretty regularly. I'm just not sure what I'm doing wrong with this thing. Seems like an interesting game though.

Ah, Braille. I haven't read or written Braille in quite some time. I'm grateful for having learned it when I was younger though, as it's probably one reason why I can write well.As for why I haven't read or written Braille in quite some time, it's simply because I do so much on the computer and don't have a Braille display. Hopefully it would come back to me if I sat down and read or wrote again.

Re: Braille: do you guys still use it in this digitalized world?

I still read physical braille books from time to time. Not as often as I should though. The feeling is, after all, amazing and irreplaceable. But even when reading digital books, I read them on my braille display. I read shorter stuff with my screen reader, sure, but when I really, truly want to enjoy something, having that be read to me kind of ruins that.I also use braille all the time in school, where I prefer to have my headphones off and focus more on the teacher. And even at home, there's no way a screen reader could replace it for solving math problems. It is just so much easier to do that when you can see/feel them! So yeah, braille is awesome, and it is sad fewer and fewer of us use it. Do we really want to be unable to read? Literacy is one of the most important stepping stones; please let's not replace it with fast-paced robotic voices.

Re: Manamon 2: Impressions Thread

I'm starting to think I made a mistake using Skeletone. Does it get a sound move that's stronger than amplify voice that doesn't come with the constraints of wild vibration or the penalties of attack concerto? Also, its ability gives it a stage of strength every time it kills something, yet I've got all special attacks on it, which makes me think I failed hugely with this one.

I use braille everyday when editing documents on my computer. I read books occationally on my Braille Display, but I don't really like it. I feel like I miss out on page layout when I only can read 40 characters at a time. I am thinking of getting a Canute 360. I am also writing this post in braille on my iPhone. Braille can also help with spelling. For me, if I don't check an email or document in braille before I send it out, I usually miss a mistake.

Re: buying a new computer that's accessible for the blind

Hey BoySo I looked around and found a laptop you might like.  The Lenovo ThinkPad T14.It's a business model so they are more likely to go with it (it's got Win 10 Pro, a smart card reader, a built in ethernet port ETC) and I believe it strikes a good balance between up to date performance, typing experience, and portability while still not being over a thousand dollars. The ThinkPad line is well known for durability, in fact they have some old ones on the space station.  It also doesn't seem like this has any crazy audio enhancements to get in your way. It's quite repairable as well, though unfortunately the RAM is soldered to the motherboard so you can't replace it, although having problems with that is very unlikely before other parts start to go or you just replace it naturally. The link is below, it's important that you specifically ask for this configuration (or a higher level one) because in my opinion it's going to keep up for a good long while.https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/th … customize?

Sometimes I get really lazy, so politely telling me to drop my ass and pick it up with the beat would help. Lol you don't have to say that specifically, I just love that phrase.

I'd potentially be interested in more mainstream games. I've just never understood what people do to play them. Some of them I've seen also seem fairly unplayable, like there's just a lot of guessing at what's going on and hoping you're right. That sounds like it would be a really frustrating experience.I see Sequence Storm has some accessibility, which is pretty cool. I'll check out the demo.

Raise the minimum wage, give everyone free healthcare, require background checks to anyone that wants to purchase guns, reduce corruption in the government, require websites and video games to be accessible under the ADA, legalize medical marijuana nationwide, lower the drinking and smoking age to 18, increase border security (without building a stupid wall, which wouldn't do anything), legalize open carry

Re: Monthly chat, November 2020

@jimmy69, while the force is probably strong with both of us, last I checked we had different parents, which is good, since married siblings makes me think of Jaime and Circie Lanister, which ends with throwing children out of windows, exploding churches,  and the complete destruction of our home town .@wing of eternity, western, eastern, sub underground cave people the source of the philosophy does not matter. When I say "philosophy is pointless", I don't mean any errors with a particular thinker or tradition, I mean the basic process of philosophical enquiry, from both a practical standpoint (as I said, my phd is a bit of paper with letters on that represents nothing but a gigantic waist of time), and from a more long term standpoint, I have just come to the conclusion that the very process of having a philosophical debate about any issue is in itself a pointless activity. This is because in any question, people will determine where they stand on that question not based on any argument proposed, or any evidence gathered, but on which side of the question their own emotions dictate they choose. The rational debate, the business of one side proposing a thesis, the other side examining that thesis and proposing a counter argument, is nothing but the steps of the game. The game will not in and of itself cause either side to change sides, merely continue with ever more complex propositions and oppositions.Hegel famously considered that the process of all debate was growth and synthesis, that one side would propose a hypothesis, the other side would propose a counter thesis, and the two would be fused into a synthesis, and thus rational argument became ever more rarefied and enlightened. Hegel got the first bit right, but "synthesis" almost never happens, people simply continue on whichever side of the issue they've decided to be on. Btw, I expressed this idea once to my professor, the one who served as my Phd superviser, and who is one of the most genuinely wise people I know, his response was: "that's a really interesting idea, you should write a paper about it" . so no, I am not interested in philosophical enquiry at all, because to me, and to others, the process is of no merit whatsoever. People will continue donning their uniforms and waving their flags for whatever sides of the little wars, or indeed the greater wars will happen, and jump on any band wagon, or flame wagon that gets rolling, and there's nothing to be done about it. I will also say that yes, the "people following their emotions", argument follows for what I have proposed here just as much, and of course if my Phd actually did some good or if someone had read it, I would likely have a better opinion of the hole process, but hay at least I'm consistent. So in conclusion, as Homer Simpson said, your best off just to  "find a dead end, and chill out till you die!"

Greetings folks!Just updated the first post again, mentioning that Jenux is not affiliated with the Maanjaro Talking Edition. Also, to make sure ya get the latest version (unless others have a better idea), I link the Nash Central Accessibility Project's page, since the latest ISO can always be found there. Also, thanks to whoever corrected me on the spelling of this OS's name (even though I had it totally correct the first time in the thread's title). I shall go update my URL redirect to this thread now. Have a good day!

They specifically say they want to ship a subset in the next few months.  In the end, what Rust has committed to there is actually better than C++, but the minimal subset will probably either have everything I'd have needed if I had a time machine, or damned close.  Unfortunately I'm not a good enough programmer to violate causality yet.

Re: A few question about C.

2020-11-05 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: A few question about C.

@13The short version is that Rust keeps failing to stabilize const generics, exposing a C API involves enough unsafe code that the safety guarantees might as well not be there, and some of the dependencies I'm using (probably) don't have good Rust equivalents yet.  The SIMD point is lesser and probably even mostly solved by now, but since Synthizer is about to entirely drop manual SIMD in favor for abusing const generics for fun and profit and just letting the compiler do it for now...basically const generics lets you fix the sizes of everything internally without having to copy/paste the code, so there's zero pointer chasing, and then the compiler gets to come in behind you and unroll your loops, optimize your divisions, etc.  it's not the only way to code libraries like this.  If this was something intended to be as flexible as what libaudioverse was aiming for you can't even do it this way.  But the alternative is hand optimizing a bunch of stuff, for example figuring out/remembering all the places something is a power of 2 or doing the incredibly complicated thing for integer division because integer division is slow on X86.  And many of those optimizations--especially around allocating--also kind of go beyond what Rust can handle without unsafe code/developing safe abstractions yourself.  So, it's just not super worth it here. But anyone who isn't going "man, I'd better make sure I design to avoid L1 cache misses, those might actually be a problem" should just use Rust without a second thought.  Same if you're in any other domain but audio, where Rust definitely has a lot of the supporting stuff there for you.  I mean graphics is on the GPU for instance, you've literally got specialized hardware for it in every machine.  But when I started Synthizer, the first thing I did was some ballpark estimations of how many floating point operations per second it'd be doing as compared to the average desktop X86, factoring in the fact that it only gets one thread and is competing with the rest of the system, and the conclusion I came to is that it does matter--doing a couple gigaflops while competing with whatever you're being used in and the rest of the OS while on a very hard deadline is indeed a challenge.  Perfectly doable, but only if you get everything exactly right.  And I know how to write (mostly) safe C++, even how to get address sanitizer running on Windows (documented as of Clang 10, yay).I don't have good benchmarks, but suffice it to say that so far Synthizer in debug builds is fast enough to be used in games on my machine if we really wanted to, even when running the shortly to be released reverb.  Sure, I could have done as good in Rust if I tried, but path of least resistance for a very specialized domain and all.

Re: Discussion of the 2020 American Federal Election

The only thing that more mail-in voting has done is to slow counts. But the good news is, we have two and a half months to get the counts right, and that's more than enough time. By far.For those of you nervous about the things Trump might try, it's important to note that he's currently losing, not winning. Biden has several paths to victory. If he pulls the trigger on one of them and has enough to get to 270, it won't matter if Trump gets voting in a different state shut down. Not that he will in any case, but the burden of proof is on you to demonstrate that something is truly unlawful, and a lot of judges will take a dim view of the loser claiming the system is rigged. Trump's own rhetoric might shoot him in the foot here.To be blunt, though, even if Biden wins, it's not over. If republicans control the senate, this won't be a so-called mandate election, which means that the senate may very well stymy Biden as much as it can. The sweeping reforms we want to see are extremely unlikely. I'm hoping that Purdue in Georgia keeps his under-50% rating, because that will mean a run-off election in Georgia, which may be able to flip the senate, especially if Biden does end up winning. Still, it will be a very, very narrow margin, and fucking Mitch McConnell still has power (thank you very much, Kentucky).

Re: Jinux OS -- News And Discussion Hub

Hello: If your system gets past grub, i.e. if you get either of the following:1: the star wars beep, not from the flash drive or other media2: a menu, confirmed with either ocr/reading appp or sighted assistance that says anything about arch linux, or anything after power up that reads welcome to grub3: a prompt that has anything to do with starting version , usually in the 240's, but any number is okthe bootloader and system are instaled correctly, don't worry about the uefi variables are not supported on this system message, this means one of the following:your firmware is booted in csm mode with uefi disabled, or has no uefi capabilities at allthe installer was accidently booted in legacy mode, not an issue, since all versions of grub are installed, which do not conflict with another, since uefi does not care about mbr boot sectors/protective mbr contentThe deal with the loader.efi is this:You booted with secure boot enabled, since secure boot only ships on consumer pcs with microsoft's key in the rom, a signed uefi application, called PreLoader, is acting as your bootloader, which chainloads grub. Since PreLoader doesn't recognize the hash of grub in your machine's nvram, you get a message telling you to enrole its hash. Since grub on the live dvd is older and packaged differently than the grub installed on to your system drive, you are asked to enrole a second hash. Getting this beast running on apple hardware is doable, but kind of a pain in the butt. To boot an installed jenux system on apple hardware, go into the apple boot menu by holding option as you power on, and press either enter if jenux is the only OS, or press I believe left arrow and enter if its installed with OSX. Since apple firmware does not support the PC speaker emulation done by grub, you will not hear any star wars, but the screen should display a welcome to grub message. If you're still having issues, reset pram, which clears nvram, and thus boot order, buy holding down command option p and r all while powering on. On my MacBook Air 2017, I had to reset pram in order not to get stuck on the flashing question mark OS Volume not found screen.

So far, I think sequence storm is the only game people have mentioned that has the kind of access you're talking about. Skullgurls is another one that's mostly accessible, menus and such are read anyways. Sequence storm does have a demo you can get on steam, I'm not sure about skullgirls though. Code 7 is really accessible, although since typing speeds the game up I'm not sure why you'd use a controller. When it comes to full audio games with controler support, I've got no idea; though you could always use joy2key and map the hell out of your keyboard, which I'm actually not completely sure if you can do with an xbox controller!

Long story short, appearing on Ripoff Report can screw you over royally, but Ripoff Report is a royally screwed up institution of which I could go into more detail as to why. Better still, good word travels fast, bad press travels faster. Now for people who say well it's your fault or the vps's fault the server was hacked, no it's not in this case.Would I know how to secure my defenses? absolutely. But is it my responsibility to do so while at the mercy of a managed host? Absolutely not, that is his. A managed host is supposed to meet the customer in the middle, i.e. customer provides the application/use-case, host maintains the server.

HelloWhen I booted into the grub, I get no speech output at all. Worse yet, when I pressed enter, I did not get any speech output then either. I got sighted assistance in fixing something to do with the loader. I do not remember what it was. I type boot and it says that I have to load a kernel. What do I do there? Do I have to choose to install everything? Thank you!

Re: py installer, Is it safe?

Why are we having this discussion again? What is the point? As for bytecodes being bytecodes, this is false. Any set of bytecodes can be decompiled into its code form. All a bytecode is is a compact (though probably a bit more verbose) equivalent of your higher-level code. If you have the manuals on hand or you know the bytecode format intimately, its easy to write a decompiler that will translate your code into a higher-level language like (say) angelscripts assembly language. You could then take that assembly language and do another conversion to convert that code into angelscript. Some languages allow you to directly convert from bytecode to the high-level language, though there's usually an intermediate stage/format because these formats are easier to work with.

Re: DHT Studios is back!

The thing that's scary about all of this is that in the blind people living in Germany topic, he was talking about being a developer and doing more course work soon. Which leads me to believe he knows better and just doesn't care. I would not want to be a customer of such an operation as this, and I do remember the first go around of a similar nature.

Re: Is there a list of games that work with an X-Box controller?

Re: Is there a list of games that work with an X-Box controller?

OK, let me be a bit more specific. I'm looking for accessibility that's a lot closer to Slay The Spire than I am for "OK if you memorize all of the menus and have just the right OCR addon and go learn the exact sequence of moves each enemy does, you can play this game". That's particularly true if, as I assume every one of them will be, it's a game I have to pay for.I say this because, while I might go down that road at some point, I want to get into a game's world, not pause every twelve seconds to go and OCR things or whatever. So I mean, it doesn't have to be an audio game, Slay isn't. It just has to be a fairly smoothly working experience. So if people could expand on the games already mentioned, I'd appreciate it. I assume none of them have demos? I'll try doing some research on the recommendations so far, thanks!
