Re: tips on lucid dreaming? hmm, interesting.I don't really do lucid dreamming that much, but what I do is deliberately let my self think about problems I've had during the day while asleep, because then, for some weird reason, the brain works abnormally fast for me. In those moments between sleep and wakefulness, I can force the brain processes to not shut down completely and therefore not go on to deep sleep, but stay awake enough to be able to think whatever I want it to, for example a math problem, I can solve it in less than afew seconds, considerably less than I would while awake. In some ways, it can be considered a weird kind of meditation, because I'm deliberately modifying my mental and metabolic state, after a fassion anyways. I am aware this is not lucid dreamming, nor is it meditation because I'm not quite awake enough to do it conciously, so, can anyone tell me what is it?@4: If you don't mind, can you explain a bit your experiences regarding lucid dreamming in more detail? What goes wrong? What makes you not able to breath? If you want to put it so, it can serve as a warning about what happens if you do it wrong or something. OK, so bad news, unfortunately.The input/output error most likely means your hdd is dieing, in more ways than one, perhaps the reading/writing heads of the disk are damaged where that partition is supposed to be located, perhaps a high voltage from the comp burned it or something, though it's kinda unlikely. If it can be proved it's so, I recommend you either check the usb ports of your comp, or the cable is damaged or something.Next, the no magic number/invalid argument most likely means the drive should be read in little-endian format, while the thing that specifies that is somehow reverted or altered so that it's read in big endian. Again, kind of unlikely for any drive to exubit such behaviour, but we are in unusual/uncharted teritory already. As a last resort, I recommend you plugg it in a windows virtual machine, whatever machine you could find. If you really want, I'm sure you could find a win xp machine with nvda pre-installed and use that, though, I am not optimistic about the drive. I would recommend also you copy all the other data off of it before the entire thing collapses, so you don't face any surprices...believe me, I went through enough of those to know how it feels to have entire gb of data erased. Then, just buy another ssd or something, or rely on cloud backup, if you feel your data can be accomodated by the budget you can afford to spend on something like google one or dropbox++ or whatever. Even keybase can be good enough, even though I don't really trust it that much, but it can't be worse than other smallish companies like dropbox. In some distros, fsck doesn't come with ntfs capabilities, but then there is the ntfs fix program. Check the disk isn't mounted first, then you can runsudo fsck -y /dev/sdb4I have to prefix it with sudo since it's a very dangerous command to run, so it will refuse to run as root for me. Re: can't install linux in normal ubuntu, there is the super+m key that shows the notifications list. Unlike mate, you can act upon them, that side of it is accessible. What is not that accessible is the desktop, actually, it's not accessible at all, it's like that install as superuser thing @1 mentioned. Orca keys don't work, you have to use only system shortcuts to open an app, like terminal or the dash to search for things and then open an app, doesn't matter which. Then, everything will work, with the unplesent side effect that desktop icons will not be available. Well, not much of a loss, since there's almost nothing there by default.About the installing more voices thing, I honestly DK how to do it, usually one just clicks through the setup like on windows, with the desktop ocr package configured properly. But most of the time, however, the setup will refuse to complete because of some .net component that's, obviously, not installed on wine. Whenever I try to install it, I get errors and so on... in a neverending cycle. For example, I got failed to get random numbers to initialise python when running a software written in python, but with windows specific modules like pywin32 and packaged in an exe with pyinstaller perhaps. Since the config and user data is stored on another partition, they won't be affected, as only the primary partition is gonna be modifyed with the update. As far as I could gather, you're not interested in the user preferences storing mechanism or anything, so the kernel and basic OS files would definitely be there, though in compiled form and no debugging symbols ship with it unless you are very, very lucky. Just in case you don't know, if a program is compiled, it most likely is translated straight down to machine code, thus the source of the program is irrecoverable for those who don't have at least a bit of the code leaked or preferably an older version of the OS open sourced, so that one can compare the unintelligible machine code with some semblance of source code. Then, debugging symbols are direct mappings between memory locations and code level constructs, like C structs, classes, strings, objects, etc. With the help of these symbols, one can make a good enough guess at where a particular program is in any moment in time and compare it to the real source code. Actually, that's what the, for example, visual studio debugger does, it can show us the execution of the program with such high level of accuracy to the source code we wrote, exactly because of those symbols. Now, because they don't really exist in an OS, you can't reliably trace the execution of a program, and know what you're looking at besides. So, if your code is both compiled and has no or next to no debugging symbols, I am going to say only one thing, good luck with whatever you want to do with that OS, you'll need it badly! If you are gonna make them opensource, I would be more than willing to contribute some functions to it, like higher order roots, logarithms of any bases and arguments, etc. Perhaps some matrix operations, like multiplication, addition, inversion, det, etc. I think there would be a need for functions that would calculate the min of a row of numbers given by a formula or something, maybe something that could calculate the derivative of a function. Btw about statistics functionality, it would be nice if it could behave like the R language, for those who know what I mean. I know I am probably overexagerating with this thing, but this and many more things could be added if you would eventually decide to make this open source. So, as you realised already, you can either make the entire volume/disk bootable, or not at all, no middleground as far as I know. Yeah, it might be kinda inaccessible, however it's good enough to bridge the gap between no gui at all and too much gui, to the point even the terminal is a kind of gui of sorts..@24, I would do that too, but I just have too many apps and things on the main C drive to reinstall them. I don't have any problem with documents, have all of them backed up, but the apps...something else. Re: windows update blue screen of death! well, I ended up in a state where grub boot recovery was shown, claiming the ntfs filesystem is broken and that I have a corrupted partition table. Let's just say you can do more things with a live linux environment than a windows one. Yes, it was paneful and I don't recommand it to beginners, but I managed to recover my disk and nothing was erased! Well, even the error I got was because of something I did, I tryed to add another partition to the table with the fdisk command, ended up deleting or in any way corrupting my entire hdd and the usb device I was using at the moment beyond repairs. A good word to remember in this case is fsck, use it pretty religiously. As far as I know, you have to know c++ to make it work, plus you'd have to find people who already did this to guide you, as I don't think you'd find enough documentation to get started, needless to speak about making progress. Maybe I'm too pesimistic and there indeed is a sea of documentation, and you don't need to know c++ to pull it off, maybe it became more like festival, maybe you would just have to learn a lightweit language like scheme, though I somehow dought that very much. For starters, I think you really have to learn some semblance of c++ at least, because even if they automated things in such a way that you don't need it anymore, you would still need to debug it, I don't think it would be as stable as, say, festival and festvox. But yeah, I'm all for new rhvoice voices, so if you do manage something, I would be interested to see how it went, wanna make one for romanian. I didn't think things are so generous in russia...anyways, I recommend you buy a braille notetaker, as you can do many more things with it than with only a regular display, for example take quick notes and stuff from the device itself, no need for something else like a tablet, phone or laptop or whatever else interfaces with braille displays and other technologies these days. DK if that's any different from abbyy fine reader and how it works, but I made a program that parses pdf pages, searches for images and stuff, then sends it to the vision cognitive services from azure to provide image description and ocr, if that's the case, it kinda generates something like facebook alt text. Now, I'm working on making it convert the pdf pages it extracts in as close html as possible to replicate the formatting of the original pdf, like tables should be html tables rendered as close to the original and stuff. Now, problem is if I could detect tables, links and so on, based on metadata or whatever, the library I'm using doesn't seemn to support that.Thing is, though, I would share it with you guys, but the more people use the azure key and in consequence my app, the more I'd have to pay, and I don't have a very wide budget right now. Re: google docs, help needed well, if only in screen reader mode, the thing basically sends messages to the screen reader as usual for web apps nowadays, through area widgets...anyways, the entire navigation is then provided by google docs itself, making the screen readers functions kinda not needed. Thing is, however, in screen reader mode only, the app sends every leter, symbol or whatever else through to the screen reader, like it implemented a screen reader of its own, that only uses nvda/jaws/orca as a speech service, kinda how we do it with the tolk library or similar.So then, as you can imagine, the time that area widget takes to update is becoming significant after a while, even more so because it sends every tiny thing through, not the smartest implementation, if you ask me. Then, another can of worms is opening...So, as the screen reader has its own navigation shortcuts and stuff, it will occasionally try to take control, not knowing it's only used as a speech service. So, that's why you hear the letter or symbol spelled twice if you have character echo turned on in your screen reader. You hear it once from your own screen reader, the other from the docs built-in thing. As if it wants to be even worse, docs uses the set lokal and region in your google account, so the docs instance might say the punctuation or other such symbols in the language your account is set in, while your screen reader, set to english, will say them in english. Just imagine how horid and confusing beyond hell that is. I don't usually enable braille mode...DK why, maybe because I don't really like it for some reason, instead I just turn off character echo alltogether while using docs.Now to braille mode. Remember how I spoke above about the screen reader being used more like a speaking service and nothing more? Well, docs recognising the fact the screen reader needs to have more controll, since it's presumably communicating with a braille display, the screen reader then gets controll over the text almost entirely. So, the previous weird kind of edit field is replaced perhaps with an area widget that's more mimicking an edit field, even though it presumably looks the same, google won't want to damage their fabulous visual aspect of their work with screen reader accessibility, now would they?Now, as the screen reader is working with something looking like a normal web edit field to it, it can navigate through it like it was one, so there's noticeably less delay, as the accessibility thing in the webpage doesn't get bombarded with so many messages it has to send through.However, there is a disadvantage to braille mode. So, you know when you made a mistake, maybe spelling based, and docs was warning you where it starts, ends, and that correction suggestions are available in that place? well, now that the screen reader has controll and it's navigating through an edit field, maybe the mistakes would be red underlined as in word, but, like in word, it would no longer be automatically read to us, unfortunately. The formatting things aren't read like in the self-contained screen reader of docs, either, I have to rely on the screen reader formatting keyboard shortcuts, like nvda+f, I wish it would be read automatically.Now, I hope my two dollars worth of ramblings is useful to anyone, I'm done, bgt lover logged out of the server, lol. Anyway, I can directly write text in there too, at least it gives me suggestions on spelling mistakes and whatnot. Over all, I find it better than ms word in a way, or maybe that's so because I haven't used word too extensi vely. However, even if I was still using windows as much as before, I would still prefere g-docs.If you don't want the characters to be repeated two times, either disable the character echo of your screen reader, or enable braille mode, that should sylence the docs side of character echo. I do the first, for optimal performance, braille mode adds some quorks and makes the experience a tad slower and less responsive. questions about android tablets hy there!So, because we all know how it is with android emulators these days, with them not coming with tb by default and not providing an easy way for us to enable accessibility by our selfs out of the box, I decided settling to debugging on an actual device.This worked very fine indeed, untill, a few days ago, my debugging device just died on me, it can't even boot anymore, it just shows a suppozidly pink colored led!So, since the thing was a very old phone no one, not even me, cared about it too much, I decided buying another testing device in stead of struggling with it to maybe fix this, only to get another problem that would totally brick the poor thing for good. Plus, I want to continue making my app, and I can't without a device, can't use the emulator for details too long and tedious to write them all here.So, I decided to hunt for a tablet, well, maybe because I always liked bigger screens anyway. Maybe also because I don't want to use my main device for testing,, who knows what might happen and I then would be without a phone?I hunted around for afordable priced ones, untill I found two lenovo tablets, as well as a samsung one. They are as follows:* lenovo tab M8* lenovo tab M10*samsung t290thing is, in the shop I went to, they had each of those in a special section for reviewing, of course, with some demo limitations and stuff, but still good enough. So, thing is, each time I tryed one, I wasn't able to start talkback or, in the case of samsung, voice asistant. What would most frequently happen, is I would somehow manage to start the screen reader, maybe get some vibration feedback, but no speech at all. Is this normal? Or, as I thought, could this demo mode they're put in restrict speech in some way?Last but not least, have you guys ever used one or more of these tablets? If so, what can you recommend? Which one is more accessible in terms of the custom things they are adding to the standard android, like a custom lock screen, diler, camera, added stuff in settings, etc? Is this not being able to start speech thingi going to persist after I buy a physical copy that's not demo restricted? Or, maybe I'm not starting the screen reader with the proper accessibility shortcut? I am using the both volume buttons thing. Btw, on which of them, if not all, will I be able to start the screen reader at android setup? Re: A topic to talk about recent findings of retro stuff I am using an incredibly old android phone as my testing device, as I don't want to turn the windows virtualisation features on only for the emulator, virtualbox/vmware won't work anymore with that thing enabled, I herd.Anyway, it's an alview a5, it has as model name alview a5 easy or something like that. It runs around 2 gigs or even less of ram and... brace your selfs...android 5! Plus a very old version of tb, which I will try to upgrade if I still can rofl. The worst thing is that the only tts I can run on it without it heeting is rhvoice, eloquence, and espeak. Everything else, including the google tts, makes it heet so badly that it stops after some time and becomes unusable unless I reboot. I guess the fact my apps are running, even though barely, on such a suboptimal thingi speaks accurately enough about how big the .net overhead really is in practice. Of course pure java apps might be faster, but for what I'm making, it is enough.Lest I forget, I have an iPhone 5s in my cupboard for some time now, Managed to upgrade it to iOS 12 or 13 or so, don't remember exactly. What do you guys think I should do with it?A petty I don't have a symbian phone, I'd love to experiment with talks and stuff, but I guess I can't have everything, right? Anyway, I don't think I could really do many things with it besides playing one or two games on it.
