Started on an iPad with Garage Band, with a midi box hooked up to my yamaha keyboard to trigger sounds. This was pretty anemic at the time, GB wasn't even close to what it is now. I used Audacity for hte better part of 5 years because at the time there was really no DAW out there that was accessible. Basically with Audacity its all copy/paste. And I have bugged some people out with this approach. If you hit the website link under my post it will take you to my soundcloud, if you scroll all the way down you'll find an album called Twilight Zone by an artist called the Phantom. i produced that whole record with audacity, mixed and mastered, etc, only thing that wasn't audacity was some instrument patches flown in from Garage Band, on the Mac of course. Production wasn't as good as it is now but there are still some tracks on there I am proud of when I play them back. I was also still learning how to scratch, so its a bit shaky there also.I moved to Reaper in 2018, using the SWS scripts, Osara and reapack, which has scripts to make the sampler way easier to use and do things that traditional samplers do. I make sample based stuff so unlike the Trap guys i don't really use that many keyboards in my stuff unless its to add some extra melodies to something I already have, which i kinda lost the ability of when I ditched Mac. Reaper is a really good DAW but it does have some quirks that can be annoying sometimes when you make beats, for example you can't turn on overdub by default, and you have to hit backslash before you record. This gets super annoying really fast when you lay down 8 bar drum sequences. Also compared to Mac OS there is a lot of tabbing in the windows version, I find it can slow me down sometimes.Rite now I have an MPC 1000 with JJOS and I'm trying to learn that machine. Believe it or not I'm actually getting somewhere, little by little. What's helpful is even with the amount of options an MPC has, its a simple interface to use, and perhaps most importantly, the cursor doesn't wrap. This is good because on some screens, like sample edit, it remembers what parameter you left your cursor on, so you can scroll through samples and apply the same edits without having to use your data wheel to scroll to the parameter you want. But if I wanna go back to the top, I just scroll left a bunch, or tap the up/left cursor buttons.As for keyboards, I really wanna move away from software based solutions. Maybe I'll have some anyway on my laptop, for a portable setup and all, but in general, at least on Windows, there's a lot of inaccessible applets for plugin companies, launchers, annoying DRM, inaccessible plugins, etc. Its just annoying and I don't wanna deal with it. I'm sick of asking for help on shit I shouldn't need help on, I know how this music thing works, you know what I mean? So I'm in the market to get a rompler with decent enough sounds to lay atop sample based boom bap beats to give them a bit of character. I doubt I'll be doing super keyboard heavy stuff but hey, you never know.Similarly, Baringer's model D minimoog clone looks dope! I would love to mess around with one of those! Pop and r music, as a blind person yo all, reviving this.I have some questions about reaper, but there's enough of those topics floating around, so lets just ressurect this generate pool of ideas and tips.So, firstly, can I move the cursor manually, I'm tired of having to hold down page down to get to bar 129 and end the time selection and then go all the way back to bar 1.secondly, key shortcuts to change the vilocity of notes you insert?thirdly, how to 1: make a loop cut off at a certain point, and 2: make a melody pitch down very fast, like what happens when the beat's drums section is about to start and you're hearing the melody and then suddenly it gets lower in pitch very fast and stops for half a bar or so, and then you get the full drums. In reaper, they act different than normal.I have a Komplete Kontroll A61 and love it very much. I've got some instruments however they require me to have the full version of the Kontakt software. But, that is $400!!! I unfortunately don't have that kind of money to spend. I'm really hoping to find a way to somehow get Komplete 12 through some kind of installment plan cause that comes with the full version of Kontakt. How do you set Reaper to record in multitracks, like, if I record a track, and then I wanna record another one but at the same time I wanna hear the first track as well, so I could record another one to it? Once you open up the templates pick the instruments that you want to edit and press control plus left arrow and it should highlight the midi file, then you should press control plus E key & it will open up the MIDI piano roll. As if you don't have a midi keyboard you can go into the midi editor and move the items around . Lots of times, when listening to trap or hip hop music, you'll probably hear hats and other percs at various different pitches within the song. For forever, I couldn't figure out how in the world to replicate this, but finally I did. I'm a logic user, and what I'd do is go ahead and activate note repeater and lay down a couple patterns. But here's the thing. I used a sampler instrument which I had loaded one hat sound into at the c3 note, and then I created my pattern on just that. After that had been recorded, I'd jump into the piano roll, (which, for all those who don't know, is a list of every single midi note/event within the selected region) and I'd simply change some of the notes to be different, thus they deviated in pitch from the main sample. I automated some panning, added some percussion, and finally after some trial and error, I got it down. This should work in any daw, really. Reaper and all the necessary add-ons to make it accessible.A couple free VST effects and a addon for complete control controllers which makes the keyboard functions accessible on reaper. A couple of templates to get you started and a sound pack which includes a couple of sounds I have laying around. I will make a video which will be exploring all the items in the pack from setting up 2 composing and whatever else people suggest in this topic. Disclaimer I am not a expert at all I am a fellow beginner that has been gathering and learning most the tricks and tips I will be showcasing in the videos. Mastering is not all about bringing up the over all levels of a track, it's also about, EQ, apply as little as possible depending on the mix you're given, how much compression you use and sometimes, you'll use different plugins depending on what you're mastering. It's not an easy task to do. Was mastering a track one day and it took most of like, the whole day to actually do. Now with that being said, How much is Omnisphere.? Been wanting to get it, but you know, been working on other things around here. Being as I work in this field along with many other professional stuff that I do on a day to day bassist, It's important to ask yourself, first, what DAW you would like to use to accomplish what you need. I use Logic and sometimes, reaper to do what I need to do. Logic for making my beats and doing a lot of my mixing, while, reaper for doing professional mastering and getting tracks ready for distribution. If you want to check out some of my stuff, just look up Jonathan Candler in your music services of choice. . Apple music, Spotify, and more! With that being said, There's a lot of stuff that you should probs get a hold of when getting started. Drum samples, 808 samples, and more. Some of the plugins that I use are the following. This is logic only. Kumplete control, Sylinth, and sometimes Leathel if I can't find sounds that I want in either of the 2 stated above that I'm looking. Then, there's EXS 24, which a lot of my drum kits are going into. Have about 9 gigs of nothing but samples, and adding more all the time to my collection.
