I probably have every version of the game since 0.19.something, but the few versions I recall that come (legally) bundled with a server application are 0.22.54 (which I have for sure) and version 9 or something like that when Colton got involved in developing it alongside Mason and both decided to allow virtually anyone to host a server (I'm not sure if I still have it but I think I do somewhere on my old hard drive).Either way, Ultra Power might have been a fun experience when it was up, but I think it'd be better to let it go.

Mahdi, the game was never open sourced. The source code was leaked, hence why the rights were aventualy transfered to sam tupy. But like others have already said, it's probably best left alone now. There's really not much going for it that other games don't already provide, please do correct me if i'm wrong.

I'm actually glad someone mentioned rtr, because I really don't see how rtr is any better than up or sbp or any of that. I mean there's no inventory system, a kind of wierd weapon system, completely, uh, just very strange movement system, really the only good things about it are team death match and ctf. so like, why do people like that game so much?Also @ilya, check your pm's.

Do we also need permission from Sam?Next thing: if permission is granted, please, ensure that there is no source code at all with this version. Perhaps there could be a version for the sake of preserving audiogame history, with the ability to explore the map offline if no server is available. I do not think this game supports bots at all, unless a very basic AI could be added, again, for the purposes of preserving audiogame history, with, perhaps a sort of of museum mode with information about this game, about what happened in the community, lest the same mistakes are not repeated again.

Hi.So, a while ago i was checking any audio and herd a couple recordings where someone was showing off quite a few different up versions. Right now the best i could find was an old client from mason's old soundworx github, up5.2 testing14, but it of corse has no server to connect to so it's effectively useless.If anyone has any working up versions with the server, let me know, i'd be intrested to try them. From what i herd of these recordings, they sound awesome.

I hope the  same can be said about games like poor zombie arena.Like, I understand that it's an open source and all, but making a change or 2 and then coming up and calling it a new release is just meh.Then they come up with those weird abbreviations for those games, lc, cm, tlw or twl I can't remember omg.I do think it's okay to learn from open sourced code, but I don't think it is okay to fill up the new releases room feed with just about the same game over and over, with a change in name, and a few changes in code here and there.This makes devs think twice next time before making any of their projects open source again imo.

While it probably isn't a problem to ask for genuine old versions of ultrapower, I wouldn't go asking for source, because whether you intended to or not, you basically just did by saying it can be source. Also, keep in mind that we could really only give you versions that rely on your own server if you really want them. There are, as you probably know, versions that are anything but future proof, and are nonfunctional because they rely on the dedicated server, it would be futile to upload those.

What happens with these so called developers you're talking about is that they copied the leaked source code as is and then tried to understand what's inside so that they can create similar weapons, change the game's name, logo and such. What makes me laugh is that although Ultra Power's code was leaked, the same happened with Beyond the Bullet, one of its clones, and with City Mass, the clone of BTB. So imagine people who stole CM's code and messed with it were actually cloning the clone of a clone! Keep it up, blind kids, and don't complain if you see mainstream developers who were actually wanting to make an accessible games, change their minds because of your great and responsible actions!

Ethin, I don't think you realize what cloning actually is. If the source code is used, the exact code is compiled again and set up as a new game, that's a clone. If somebody simply creates a game that is almost exactly the same but if they code it them self, they are not cloning, they are copying ideas yes, but not cloning. Just thought i'd clear that up.I personally don't see why multiplayer sidescrolling pvp things should be banned, i actually quite enjoyed ultrapower, just because drama went down with masen shouldn't mean another developer should be banned from creating a simular game. I can see why taking source would be frowned upon or not allowed on here, but why should an entire type of game be ferbidden on here just because of something that happened with one developer.

@9, if you want to make a game that's a clone of ultrapower then I'd advise you to never publish it -- to anyone. Hell, get rid of it and forget about it. If you want to make a game that is similar to ultrapower but has different mechanics and other differences, then you better make it pretty non-clone-like, otherwise people are going to get bitchy about it and accuse you of cloning ultrapower and all I'll say is 'I hate to say but I told you so'.

But I'll remind you, in case any of you have forgotten -- stop developing these. All they've caused are problems: problem after problem after problem, argument after argument after argument, and flamewar after flamewar after flamewar. So please, learn when not to do something and when to do something. This is not something you should be doing. (I might be interpreting the messages wrong here, but this definitely sounds like your going to be using the ultrapower codebase, however you got it.)

As someone who worked with Ultrapower's code after it was leaked, I can only say this: if you want to make a game, I would make it from scratch and not rely o much on that source code. Here's why. First, its your own code. Nothing's better than looking at your own code, and understanding the entire thing. You worked on it, you made it, its just better. Second: The source code to that game can go so far, and the server is very, very, very, laggy! Sure, people can fix it, but that would take quite a bit of work and at that point, you're better off writing your own server. I mean, the way I would put it, go ahead, use some of that code, like the map system, for example. But hey, that's not my decision because whatever you choose to do with the code is your own choice. Mason, I would like to say thank you, for releasing that code to the public and allowing it to be used. At first I was a little bit mad because now that's all we're gonna see, is the f

I have to say that takes a lot out of someone to just give that code out for people to use. Hi,Looks like there has been some... error in communication.masonian says that he was just ok with  desafio mortal using UP source code and sebby mistook it as the UP sourcecode being free for anyone and everyone.I actually agreed with Sebby's post and was like this'll bring in many clones but ones that were nothing but UP would just be forgotten after a while... @masonian, honestly though at this point you'd be better off allowing people to use that code than not since so many already seem to have access to the code. Mason, I feel bad that you have been somewhat forced into this position, because the users of your stolen code have shown they are not going to stop.  It's true you are "choosing" to make Ultra power free, but I understand that this is actually a gift you are giving to myself and the other moderators.  This is not a developer happily giving something to the rest of the dev community, this is a person letting the moderator team off the hook, realizing how much work it will be for us to police and battle to stop the future "UP clones".  I use the popularized term "UP clone" to refer to games created using Mason's original code.Mason I thank you.  As a fellow developer I can appreciate that it took to do this, and I believe I understand the reasons behind it.

Well, much to my disliking, I have set UP free, as stated before. It wasn't a choice I wanted to make, seeing so much of my hard work and others' hard work put to waste. However, I do understand what this means, I'll probably be hated because of my decission. And here's why I chose it.No matter if I had or hadn't, people were just gonna keep posting UP topics over and over and either way there's nothing we could've done about it. And I really don't care as much what happens to my code.If someone propperly can expand and update that code, they will prove themselves a decent coder. If it's just a UP clone, then it's not worth anything. Ug I don't know. Any decission I would've made someone wasn't gonna be happy. Sometimes I just wish I'd never created that game and worked on that for so long. I don't know what to do at this point.

@Aaron:Exactly. IMO this is a good thing for people who want to expand and build on a solid base for their own game. It's sort of like having an Unreal or Source engine type codebase, reliable and there, it's merely up to people to figure out what they want to add to it.That, and make it stand out from the crowd. @ironcross32: I think the community will speak if a game is nothing but ultrapower itself with nothing else added, and I think those games will just die. With stuff like Desafio Mortal, it shows that expansion is possible from the ultrapower code, and I think if people were to just put up games that had nothing new now, it'd be an utter mess. So, it's up to people to make judgement and not jsut get the code, rename it, and upload, because in the end it will just hurt their development.

I think this is a terrible decision, now it gives the low life pieces of crap out there not only the opportunity to distribute their games derived by UP code, but also it sets a precedent that stealing code is OK, because eventually people will get tired of seeing the topics and just say well OK, I've had it, have at it peeps. I think this will bring more low quality games to the forefront, that, to be honest, don't deserve a page here, because they were thrown together in a week or two because they got a leg up off of stolen code.I sympethize with forum staff who have had to deal with the torrent of UP related games off of this mass barrage of code stealing that has taken place. I get that it is not fun to be a moderator, it is a responsibility, and you have to make a lot of tough decisions. I get that even though you have taken the responsibility of standing up for game developers, this is a slog of a fight that can get wearing at times. I'm sure there are 
 other factors that I don't get, and wouldn't get unless I had spent time as a moderator of this forum, I'm not trying to act as if I know what's like, I am just pulling from other life experiences here. I also get that the decision is made, and I have no say in the matter. I am simply writing about this because it concerns me that now, people will be able to use UP code to write games that they will throw up and that are probably gonna suck. If you want code base to start off with, find a lib or two. If you want to learn, ask people to help you. Or, read the BGT manual. It's pretty in depth. I also get that coding is hard work, and you need to look at examples to know how certain things work, that's how I learn best, and I will tell you as you have seen me write here many times before, I, suck, at, coding! It does help to have examples, it does help to be able to look through others' code to see how they have done things. But, coding is more than j
 ust that, its solving problems, and when you work for what you want, it is a lot better, and a lot more satisfying when you make progress, when you achieve the goals that you've set out to. You feel a sense of well-being and accomplishment. I don't condone code stealing at all. I also don't' want to play a game if I know that it's source was derived from stolen code.I just think this will come back to bite us all in the end, when we are flooded with low quality games that aren't worth our time. I also don't think it was right to cave in and say OK, just, just have it. But that's just me. Anyway, not trying to bash here, just trying to get my point across.

Every repeat offence will result in an exponentially severe banishment, so that if you violate it three times, you will be banned for six months. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis in the event that a poster is unaware of this ruling; for the avoidance of doubt, posting in the New Releases Room exempts you from this exception.I will be coordinating with the other moderators to see if we need to institute a more permanent, general-purpose rule for dealing with this particular kind of problem, which I regret we have not yet done, and for which the other official rules don't adequately serve.
