Re: A topic to talk about recent findings of retro stuff

Well on the subject of jailbreaking apple discourages it, but its no secret that they watch what the hackers are doing jailbreaking things.Anything they see which they think looks good enough has a chance to be included in the next update so I guess in a round about way you are helping development, except apple is closed source so they can't admit that but still.I agree about tanks. My old toshiba 1850t is an utter tank mostly. The wireless switches and volume knobs when I asked toshiba why these were removed was told that those components with frequent use got clogged or broke in some instances and were deemed weak points which does actually make sence.Yeah the soni I have an sx35 with buttons and switches but that was updated to something else.I have 3 soni units, the sx, a ux60 which was interesting with its buttons, and a px330 which is interesting in itself. My new olympus lsp4 while I need to learn some of the control has a game pad style d pad as its main control menu navigation thingy which I do like though. So gamecontrolers do make it into other devices I guess. But yeah, I have 2 units 3 if you count my really broken toshiba tecra a9.The fan on that one is busted and the hinge is screwed due to frequent use.I always had it way back.On the subject of toshibas, yeah they still make them here. However most are 13 inch and while there are a few 14s the 15 inch stuff are collecters items.I have a 3200m which is a joke but I wander what would happen if I pulled out the dvd drive and hard drive, and replaced both with ssd and hdd combo or ssd ssd respectively if I'd get a bit more life out of it.The product serial is on the back as well as the windows key, so technically I should get a free upgrade to 10 pro should I need it.On the other hand, linux could be the way.On the other hand, I like the accessible control panel for hardware and part of me is wandering why I don't load windows 7 32 bit or old xp and just use it as a games and muck about system as it is.Then again, I just don't do that sort of thing anymore. What I do wish I had was a system from 1998 or there abouts where they still used real speakers, real soundcards and real graphics in normal systems or back to a system made in 1995 when we still had native fm midi ability.Granted, I will never give up coolsoft or my 4gb collection pluss of retro and modern soundbanks but even so.

@21, when I stopped using it, it already had iOS 10. I saw the update screen thingi, so I pressed update, and boom, iOS 13.@22, I don't think jailbreaking is not allowed, since it's not technically illegal to do so, you lose woranty because apple thinks it so, but by the law, it's not illegal. Anyway, I might research it at some point, when I could finally build ipa files so I could get some use out of it.

Re: A topic to talk about recent findings of retro stuff

Oh boy, I got all kinds of stuff laying around here. I never throw anything away on the off chance that I might need it someday, so I've built up quite a collection of electronics. I'm an old soul at heart though, so those aren't the only things I keep. I can't get enough of antiques, old instruments, vintage items... I really enjoy that kind of thing. I don't actually have much in the way of old objects, say, before the turn of the century, but I'll tell you what, I sure like going to antique stores to look at it all. I've been looking around for an old clock... that ticks. It's like you can't buy those anymore. The entire world seems only to want clocks that make no noise. Every time I go search for old timepieces, I get millions of results about the quietest possible clock, or one that is nonticking, or just generally anything except what I'm actually looking for. Boy do I like the peaceful, steady sound of a mechanical "tick, tick, tick..." but I digress. As far as technology, I have an old iPod nano around here somewhere, which I've been meaning to charge up and get some music on. I also have an iPod shuffle, but I'm not sure if it still functions. I have an iPod touch 5 as well, which needs repairing and is running iOS 9. I have two beautiful iPhone 4S devices, as well as 2 5S devices, which are both unfortunately running iOS 12. @19, how did you manage to get iOS 10 onto your phone? Did you down or upgrade it?I also got an old dell inspiron from 2000 something, I was helping clean out somebody's place and found it there. The owner didn't want it anymore, the screen was totaled so they couldn't use it, but... well, doesn't bother me none. Runs Windows Vista like a boss. Not that I like Vista, but a computer is a computer. Maybe I'll upgrade it, or put linux on it, or any number of things.I got way too many old desktops laying around two, some of which were custom built to be the best of the best in their day. Of course, their specs are laughable now, but I stripped some of them for parts anyway, you know, just in case. I now have a lot of desktop storage which I use as just other external drives. Most of those systems were running Win7, and they were optiplex machines from 2010, but one was from even earlier and had XP on it. Everything ran fine. That's just what I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure if I look around I  could come up with more. I sure wish I had some older notetakers, hated the apex when I had to use one but now I would like to get one back. An mPower too, if I could find it. Oldest thing I have is the U2. I've never even seen the real relics, like the braille note classic, or the pacmate, or, even before those units, a braille lite. I have got to fool with a braille and speak though, boy that was something.

@18 I would jailbreak it, only I dk how. Anyway, if I could test my mobile apps with it, I would, but I don't have a mak to compile the iOS parts of the cross-platform app, unfortunately. Wanna see if I could get the maks in github to build the ipa files, then I could load them on the device with jailbreak, if I'm understanding it correctly. I am familiar with rooting in android realm, is this jailbreaking the same, but for iPhones?

Re: A topic to talk about recent findings of retro stuff

I am using an incredibly old android phone as my testing device, as I don't want to turn the windows virtualisation features on only for the emulator, virtualbox/vmware won't work anymore with that thing enabled, I herd.Anyway, it's an alview a5, it has as model name alview a5 easy or something like that. It runs around 2 gigs or even less of ram and... brace your selfs...android 5! Plus a very old version of tb, which I will try to upgrade if I still can rofl. The worst thing is that the only tts I can run on it without it heeting is rhvoice, eloquence, and espeak. Everything else, including the google tts, makes it heet so badly that it stops after some time and becomes unusable unless I reboot. I guess the fact my apps are running, even though barely, on such a suboptimal thingi speaks accurately enough about how big the .net overhead really is in practice. Of course pure java apps might be faster, but for what I'm making, it is enough.Lest I forget, I have an iPhone 5s in my cupboard for some time now,  Managed to upgrade it to iOS 12 or 13 or so, don't remember exactly. What do you guys think I should do with it?A petty I don't have a symbian phone, I'd love to experiment with talks and stuff, but I guess I can't have everything, right? Anyway, I don't think I could really do many things with it besides playing one or two games on it. Happy enough I have a tun of phones with ancient android to test things on and see them break, rofl!

HiWell, I'll write an article quite soon talking about how to crack and mod the PSP to run custom firmware. I will write this for the PSP 1000, as that's the one I have, but you can pretty much do it on any PSP except for the PSP go and PSP street. Also, a WIFI switch is basically a toggle to turn WIFI features on or off, without going into settings. Very convenient, if you ask me. The PSP also has it.

Re: A topic to talk about recent findings of retro stuff

Well I have been working for someone on an old toshiba sat l850  the 3200m class 3rd gen cpu with amd hd7800 and getting it working properly.I pulled out my now ancient c850 sat pro of the same vintage without the amd card.It still works.Unsure what I will do with it.There is fuck all wrong with it and its basically a collectors item now since toshiba only produce a couple 14 but mostly 13 inch ultrabooks.I could load windows 10 on it but having used win10 on a 3200m dule its a bit of a joke.A 3700qm with ssd and hdd combo is almost as fast if not faster than my amd ryzen 2nd gen or the prodesk 6th gen I worked on a little while back though. However if you need to work on a 3200m, using bulk crap uninstaller to delete all the toshiba bloat is the first thing. The toshiba bloat isn't bloat per say but its not going to be compatible with your os so power and cd drives refused to work till I killed things and becides they gave errors all over the show.Srs sucks at least with espeak but not 1core, just be prepaired for system slowdowns, also the speakers in the toshiba I worked on without srs crappyness were an utter joke, unlike this workstation which while it has some speaker and card cutout to control the powerfull amp, I have a pair of headsets that plugin to the single microphone headphone combo jack with the ability to do both and be quite good about themselves, so yaay for senheiser hd410s I guess.Anyway if all windows programs in the background do not run, and nothing like skype, cloud software, etc doesn't start and no background brouser stuff runs,  and nothing bar the drivers well, heck you could actually stop the realtech effects drivers from running completely because they still use the duel non integrated chipsets and you can probably kill srs and all the other effect processing to, and it would really be fine. For retros, I still have my broken dropped mangled floppy and hard drive keynote who's only thing works is its synth card, I wouldn't  even try to put the battery that got dropped with it back in, I really should throw that away. What I really would like is a retro system created just before hd audio came out, round the ac97 days where sound effects actually rocked, or back to 1998-99 where everyone used actual speakers, actual sound and video hardware and actual non integrated chipsets.Rumors on some lists are that some new asus units don't even have the combo jack.I guess they expect you to run bluetooth like that, I didn't want to but maybe my next thing to get will have to be a pair of 300 series senheiser motif or whatever it is with a dule bluetooth and cord combo, I almost got those, probably should have.Saying that with all the laptops now days going with single 256-1tb ssds, and mostly 256gb, I am either running of external drive all the time or just have a laptop and a desk system.Either a miniture, or one of those pro desk units, highly modable in design, really cool.

Re: PM topic

rofl @Mayana, I'm still not sure about this topic either.  As things went, I actually checked my PM's yesterday before I saw this topic, but that could be because I was already expecting a PM from you, given I had replied to your previous PM and um, yeah, we'll go in circles here...It's not altogether a bad idea because PM's don't notify you that you like, actually get PM's.  But it's not altogether a helpful topic if, much like the PM system, you don't check the topic, so kind of lose lose here as I see it.  If it weren't for the fact that yours truly checks his PM's at least once a week though, chances are I never would have known you sent me a message to begin with.  In short, what I think it comes down to is how much time one is willing to invest in any service, be it social media related, news, sports, gaming, etc etc.  When the developers fail to satisfy, the consumers pick up the slack and try to do something to pick up the slack if they like it enough.  I, for instance, do not like the fact that the forum does not send you some sort of notification to let you know if you've been mentioned in a post; that seems like it should be easy enough to have in this day and age, right?  On the other hand, I can use the search option and type Nocturnus and see if any posts have my name in them, so while that may not be fullproof at least I get what I want to know to some extent.

But, even I am on fault My first pm to a person was something like, hi. Can you buy manamon2 for me? For whatever reason, which I realised was absolutely wrong.I recently started chatting by pm system with a Brazilian guy, it feels great.Anyway, let's see how well this work.@BlindNinja, I've sent you a PM.

But if it did help you, that's at least one proof that this can work. As I've ranted about in #12, I still don't believe this is a good solution. And yet I was the only one so far to use it. For science, but still. Lovers of a centralized PM topic, where are you now, to prove me wrong?

Re: PM topic

I wonder, why many of the users here don't check there pm's often, is it time consuming? In my opinion, it's not. It's really easy. Just ctrl home, just few v's, there is the Private messages visited link, enter, t, or x.I did say before, one topic which says, a PM Topic should be created and should be made as a sticky topic in a room. Now I will say no on that, it will use more time. Next thing, after sometime, people will stop checking that topic as well. Third thing: if there's a huge list of users posting here, people will not read all of them.A suggestion which can be implemented in Chrome/Firefox or users with any other browser. There should be a list of keys which can send us in different rooms. For example, alt p will send us in Private Messages, alt g will send us in General Game Discussion Topic, alt o in Off Topic Room, and etc.Now about me. I check my inbox regularly, though I take time to reply. Also, I look forward to read anything that comes in my inbox as a pm.

Re: PM topic

I think the reason why centralized PM topics haven't worked out so far is because they don't offer much advantage when compared to the inbox system we have.Individual PM topics are much more conspicuous. Let's say there is a topic called "Mayana, check your damn inbox already!" If I log in and scroll through the new topics, I will eventually get to that topic and ... huh? Wait, this topic title has my name in it! Time to pay attention. Now, I suppose this topic does offer some of that advantage. If I scroll by it, I am more likely to think "Hmm, when have I last checked my PMs? Let's go do that, I guess." And since every topic on here has an RSS feed, I suppose I could subscribe and be aware of new PMs even while offline:https://forum.audiogames.net/feed/rss/topic/37789/But why do that? The signal-to-noise ratio isn't ideal. I'd have to read through many posts of people PMing other people that aren't me, not to mention posts saying why this isn't going to work (yes, guilty). And then I'm still likely to miss a PM anyway, because obviously, not everyone is going to use this. So, this topic is of most benefit to me if I just see the title, become reminded of the PM feature, and go check the actual inbox. And I think that can be accomplished just as easily with other forms of reminders. But don't individual PM topics have the same problem? Or perhaps they're even worse? With this topic, people who don't care about PMs to other people can just skip it and be done with it. With individual ones though, there's one, like, every minute, and they clutter up the "Topics With New Posts" list so much! Not really. Or well, at least I don't see how they are *more* problematic. Most of us navigate through this forum by heading, right? Each of these PM topics is just one unneeded H press. You press H, you hear the title, realize it's not for you, move on. We do that for other topics that don't interest us, so this really isn't a huge addition.I obviously can't blame anyone for opening them anyway. I did that for Wing of Eternity's topic, since it had a few more posts than a PM topic should, and I got curious. But when I posted, I didn't do so to complain about how annoying these topics are or how little I care about who is sending emails to Nocturnus. Because the title was clear and honest. Just like if you find a container of rat poison, you shouldn't swallow it and then blame the company for making rat poison poisonous. It's rat poison; meant for someone else, but obviously still potentially dangerous to you.Wait. This comparison implies that Wing's topic was actually most dangerous to Nocturnus ... look, you know what I meant, OK?So, how about we just get used to these? Instead of  getting offended that there are topics out there that aren't meant for us (sounds different when I put it that way, doesn't it?), we could all treat them the same way I'm going to treat this topic: as gentle reminders to check our own inbox, too! Suddenly it's a kindness, not an annoyance! You know what the rule is, don't you? Always look on the bright side of life!(By the way, my inbox is always open, and I am a very attentive reader indeed. Wink wink, nudge nudge ...)

Re: PM topic

I don't think the forum email system even works any more, it always throws an error after sending, and I'd imagine that has something to do with whatever broke subscriptions. Not to mention that half of the old timers on here probably use old ass emails from years ago, or just plain have the option hidden. I myself have my email + the option to send forum emails available, but from my experience, most people only have forum email, or neither.

So, we are trying to solve a problem of people not checking their messages, by creating another thing they have to check instead? Don't know, easier to press the private messages link occasionally, press T to see if there are any tables, if not, no new messages. If yes, read, delete, move on.

I was just about to ask, where's Dark, and here he is.I think this topic also references the book series called Funny Bones, about skeletones. It also has a tv show with a funny synth-based theme, oh and I think the narrator sounds like Dark as well kind of.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeqqskFen68

Re: Dark topic

The darkness was the darkest darkness and the darkest dark history of the twelve darkest darknesses within the darkest forever darkness. All other darknesses, however dark those darknesses might be, were lesser darknesses than the darkest darkness and the darkest dark history of the twelve darkest darknesses within the darkest forever darkness, for it was truly the darkest darkness and the darkest dark history of the twelve darkest darknesses within the darkest forever darkness, and thus, by definition, the darkness that was darker than all other darknesses. Were it possible for any other darkness to be darker than the darkest darkness and the darkest dark history of the twelve darkest darknesses within the darkest forever darkness, that would mean that the darkness of which we are speaking would not be the darkest darkness and the darkest dark history of the twelve darkest darknesses within the darkest forever darkness. As this darkness of which we speak is in fact and indeed the darkest darkness and the darkest dark history of the twelve darkest darknesses within the darkest forever darkness, we now know with certainty that no other darkness in the history of all darknesses that exist throughout the entire history of forever can, in no wise, be darker than the darkest darkness and the darkest dark history of the twelve darkest darknesses within the darkest forever darkness.

I know the newbie islands pretty much inside out.BTW, you don't have to trigger the red fern at all. You don't have to say Distemper or anything else. That's just a handy clue.Go to Polliwog swamp, look for a room that mentions the smells of strange flowers (it's 1 west of the rocky island with the newt). Search there over and over till you find a red fern. Then go to the farmer in Stillwater, talk to him, just to be sure, then go south, type "use fern dog", then talk to the farmer. Boom. Done.

Hello, thanks for all the feedback! I actually didn't think this was going to get anywhere, so I'm really glad people are apreciating it. Headings have now been added for each town we come across, thanks to amerikranian's suggestion. I also apreciat the offers of help, though I don't even know when I'm going to be able to continue start working on this since this january is proving to be a murderous one concerning school, though I am confident I will find more time once this semester is finished. I am already in the middle of a guide for Kordan though there are some things coming up that I'm a tad worried about like that romp through the mundelius cave, which is a very complex afaire that I've always needed help with at some stage or another when I played it in the past. Still, thanks for the encouragement, and I'm quite sure I can make this be a thing, whenever I get the chance to work on stuff and potentially coordinate with others. My writing style may not be the best at times so changing it up would be a great thing.

@1, I strongly, strongly suggest to put some headings in this and any future editions you decide to make. Perhaps put a heading for each area? Also, if you wish, I am more than willing to sit down and create a new character and help you out with the quest directions for Kordan and most of Archais. We will just need to coordinate on which areas to take so we won't do double duty for the same area. Let me know if you are interested, either on here or via email. If you are, don't expect immediate results as I do have SAT, school, and some personal undertakings I must juggle.

I will actually agree, and this isn't even a criticism it's just a tip for satire in general, since satirists do have to do this before lampooning something. Translators generally don't have any sense of humor and the joke will generally fall flat. On the other side of the tracks, Google Translate itself has created quite a bit of comedy over how god awful it really is.

I won't argue with the fact that the onion is way funnier and way better at satire than I am now or ever will be. However, I do think they're less subtle than me, and I'm not even subtle myself because it is incredibly obvious what and who I'm referring to. Also keep in mind that this is a product of my 3:00 AM brain. I'd edit it a bit to correct spelling errors and to take out the references to headphones and computers, but one the post has already been written and two a lot of those older English words aren't in my web browsers dictionary, so it'll say they're misspelled anyway. Sorry you don't like the joke.

Re: Satire Topic for Recent Forum Events

Honestly the only problem I have with it is that it's just kinda shitty satire.I mean either way the teens are gonna eat it up because they are easily amused and enjoy a good punching bag, but your making it incredibly obvious who and what your talking about, really jsut rehashing the story in a weird way rather than actually making a new story out of it with elements that point back to or a plot that parallels the original with minimal direct references to it.You were spelling it out by explaining the computer and headphones for instance, which just makes the reader feel as if your explaining it to a five year old.It simply drags on and on, there are spelling mistakes, and with the amount of sudo old English you use it just seems like your trying too hard. Now I'm not saying I could do much better with old English, but I know better than to try as well LOL.It's supposed to be more vague man, and with such a small community, you'd be better off going for a smaller target or letting things cool down first and then remind people of it while slowly revealing the hints along the way.  This interpretation of satire just feels like getting hit by a sledge hammer, there is no finesse to it.Maybe check out the onion for some pretty good examples of deadpan satire, particularly around political events.
