I don't know if I'm any help, but I am using a pair of ML subs with my AE5's and it works a treat. The MLs (Martin-Logan) have a variety of interconnection options, but I use the ML active crossover (70hz) to feed my AE's the line level high-pass signal, and then have my ML subs set at 40hz.

Hi I spent the day at the Bristol Hi-Fi show on Sunday and listened to a REL subwoofer demo and was blown away. I've never wanted a sub for the Hi-Fi before as I always thought the bass would be too exaggerate, but this demo was superb. The soundstage grew as soon as the sub was switched on. I

Since you mention REL, they actually recommend the use of speaker level connections with a very low xover point. The argument is that timing cues and the character of your amp will be picked up by the sub. Not sure how that helps you though, as I assume the active speakers have digital inputs
