Before I got involved with my de Braga discovery, I was working on the Mello/Mello Castanho's of Maia, Ribeira Grande. One thing that had confounded me was I could not locate information on my ancestor, Joao de Mello's parents or siblings. I was able to solve part of the mystery this month.

Yes, I found quite a few errors in the baptisms. One says Emilia is a Braga. Another says they were received in Santa Anna. Mafalda does not have Medeiros in her immediate ancestry. Anyway, I suspect an error in the parents of Mafalda. It is quite a rare name. There is only one Mafalda in said

Hi Paul G, They wouldn't mix up Anna with Joanna. It's 2 different names. I'd make a sequential time line for these kids and note how the mother's name appears. If Anna died in childbirth or shortly after, Jose may have married her sister Joanna very shortly afterwards, as he needed help with
