The only way to get to Hawaii on a passenger ship was to leave from Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel island in the Azores. If you lived on a different island, you had to get to Sao Miguel. Ships also left from Funchal on Madeira. That is why Hawaii has so many from those 2 islands. Cheri Mello
