Hi,
My ancestors are Grandfather, Guilherme (William Souza) whose parents were
Joseph (Jose) Souza and Maria Rose D'Avila and Grandmother Maria Bettencourt
whose parents were Francisco Jose Bettencourt and Francisca Pereira. My
Grandparents came to this country and lived in New Bedford, Ma.
A great grandfather committed suicide (in CA) in 1912 and he is buried in
the Catholic cemetery with other family members but with no grave marker.

Cheri,
Do you know if this group published other similar collections, or does
anyone know if a bibliography exists?

Hi Cheryl, I see Cheri gave you the information for the St. John Cemetery
Book. I just got the letter from the American-Portuguese Genealogical and
Historical Society saying they have ceased operation. That is how I got the
book through them. Cheri was more knowledgeable then I was.

death records after 1910 or 1917 or whatever it is now aren't inaccessible,
they just need more work.
I once got someone to do me a genealogical favor on one of mine. I'm not sure
if you can pay them to search for you or not - in most places for a fee they
will search for so many years.

E,
It's worth a search in Diario de Noticias. They probably would have
printed an obituary.

Yeah, I thought the same thing about suicides not being allowed to be buried
in Catholic cemeteries (at least back in the day), yet I've run across a few
in my genealogy searches. I'm not sure how they succeeded in getting that
person
Carol,
Thank you, I also have a well worm St. John's Cemetery book and, for other
listermembers, I recently found many of the burials are now online on
either interment.com or findagrave.com, can't remember which one.

My family has a story about a divorced woman who wasn't allowed to be
buried in the Catholic Cem. But my great, great-grandmother paid $1000 to
someone they moved her from the cemetery she was buried in to the St. John's
Cemetery in New Bedford, under the cover of darkness. (Those were the

Cheryl,
It was self-published by the American Portuguese Genealogical and Historical
Society which ceased to exist as of a couple of months ago. In their letter
to members, they said that they were keeping the post office box open until
Dec. 31, so I would write immediately.
