I get paternal grandparents as: Joao de Sousa and Catharina do Espirito Santo
and
Maternal grandparents as: Manuel Pereira Cachete, never seen that surname
before and Maria Silveira
Godfathers: Antonio Homen da Costa
Godmother: Francisca Pereira Cachete
Hope that helps

Yes, they invoke the Virgin Mary (Nossa Senhora or Our Lady) by someone
touching the crown. It was typically done before the 3rd time period, but I
still see it here and there in the 3rd time period records.

After the godfather, which as Sam said is Antonio Homem da Costa (who is
single), it is mostly the normal church script as Cheri said. I think the
confusing part is that they did not name a godmother. Instead it says that
for Madrinha they invoked Nossa Senhora touching the crown of the
Hi Al,
You should post this to the Facebook groups Azores Genealogy, São Miguel
Geneology, Santa Maria Geneology, etc. I’m sure you will find many interested
in your video and pick up a few votes too. Good luck

David L,
Can you specify what parts? After the godparents, it's the usual church
language about that the baptism was read back and everyone verified it was
true and the baptism was drawn up in duplicate (one set for the church and
one for the Diocese/Vatican or wherever it goes), and the
"x" is an abbreviation for "ch." You'll also see "Paxeco" in some records
for Pacheco. I'm sure there are other examples as well.

Horace,
I believe the online web site asks you for your Portuguese I.D. card. I'm
not sure how you'd get one when you reside in the U.S. You may need to hire
Joao Ventura to obtain it for you. He lives in the Azores, so he'd have the
correct identification. I suggest you email him with your
Hi all,
I was able to get a year if 1931 for my grandfather from Capelas. The
church books only seem to go to 1911.
Are there resources available for 1931?
Thank you!

The Diairo de Noticias was published in New Bedford, so that's the city the

Hi Horace,
Yay, progress!
The Azores (and most countries and regions) have their privacy concerns. So
protections are in place for those who may be living. You won't find a 1931
birth or baptism from the Azores online anywhere. The books may be sent to
the corresponding archive in 2035. And
Hi Leonor B,
Many Portuguese didn't have last names historically, especially women.
It's hard to follow your story as we all have 2 grandfathers and 2
grandmothers. It's not always stated in your story which if paternal and
which is maternal. You may just find it easier to use their names when
Hi Horace,
Do you have the exact birth date of your Manuel b. 1931 and died 15 Sept
2013? The trick to working with the Civil Registry is having the EXACT date.
If your Manuel came to Fall River with HIS mother (your grandmother), you
should trace HER. If your Manuel was born in 1931, his mom
Hi!
I am so sorry, I figured my story was a little jumbled. I was just so
excited to finally find some like minded people. It's very difficult to
get any straight answers from family mainly because they do not remember.
Most of my family is gone so this becomes a real chore. I started with my
I show the last name as being spelled Caxeta. Francisco Pereira Caxeta is a
child of Manuel Pereira Caxeta and Maria Silveira and 45 years old.
(Manuel's mother's brother) This would make him Manuel's uncle. I have not
seen the name of Antonio Homem da Costa before. These mysterious names that

I know Manuel came to Fall River in 1966 with my grandmother and passed
away in Fall River on September 15, 2013.
So good news there. You mentioned being able to purchase a record. Is
there a certain way to purchase a record?
Thank you so much Cheri!

No Portuguese I.D. card for me! Born in the states. Am I still eligible
for one?
I know I can get the exact date from my father. Manuel came with his wife
Maria Benevedes.
Best,
Horace

Hello,
I am new to the group and to Genealogy in general. I was always curious but
I finally took the plunge in January. I am hoping to get some guidance from
those more experienced. Here's a little bit of my story:
My father is from Aljezur (small town in Algarve). I do not know much about
Hi,
Invoking the the parish saint (for my town, it was Nossa Senhora do
Rosario) was common practice back then. Normally, they just referred to her
as "Nossa Senhora". Someone needed to represent Nossa Senhora and it was
normally the Sacristan or someone chosen by the family.

Hi there,
I’m from Capelas and my father who is 78 has a very very sharp memory. If
you have any info on your parents if they lived in Capelas then I can ask
him about your family etc and he may be able to remember something about
your grandparents my grandfather was born in 1913 so your
