[AZORES-Genealogy] Mother Name Change

2012-11-01 Thread Eddie Machado
Hi all,

Does anyone know if there were instances of mothers changing their 1st
names? Say from Anna to Maria? Am I just reading the Baptism records wrong?
Or just a totally different person? Here is one record example:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-NORTEGRANDE-B-1799-1810/SJR-VL-NORTEGRANDE-B-1799-1810_item1/P230.html

There are others with same names were Anna is clearer.

Thanks,

Eddie Machado

The first record is not as clear as the second but I see Anna Isabel and I
think de Almeida in the second record it is clearly Anna Isabel de Almeida.
Anna is hyphenated with An on the first line and na on the second.

Eddie,

Be VERY careful with this family! There are at least two Manuel d'Azevedo
Machados in the time period having children. One wife, mine, is Isabel
Maria and yours is Ana Isabel, I believe. I am at work at present and
don't have my data in front of me but I do know that I had to trace both
families to keep them straight. It's so easy to get them confused. To make
matters worse, when you go to the marriages there are 3 marriages of
people with similar names. One, can't remember which, even has the Priest
writing a note in the margin about the mix ups!

I will try to send you what I have on your line when I get home and can
figure out how to send it from my PAF program. I know that I have a list
of the kids with spouses. I don't have all of the marriage dates for them
but the names at lease.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with on obit please - Victorina Rosa

2012-11-01 Thread Cheri Mello
Diane D,

It's probably her. Do you find any other Victorina (Rosa or Constancia)
having babies with another Cristiano Machado (or Machado Pereira)? If you
don't find another Cristiano/Vitorina couple, then that's your Vitorina's
obit. You can also look for Cristiano's 2nd marriage and see what they
call Vitorina (he'll be a widower of Vitorina ___). You have her on all
the kids' baptisms as Vitorina Constancia? What about all of her
biological grandkids? How do they list her at their baptism?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Furtado in Pleasanton, CA

2012-11-01 Thread Robin Borba Besotes
Ally,

Keep me posted if you find any information from the church. My 2nd great
grandmother, Ana Furtado Jorge do Souto, was married in San Mateo County
and other than that information I have no other connections to her
Furtado's. It wasn't until I met a cousin online who lives Texas who
happened to additional information from her grandmother about our mutual
2nd great grandmother and provided me with her full last name of Furtado
Jorge do Souto. Once I had this, everything fell into place.

As I mentioned in my earlier post I've traced this line as far back as I
can in the village of Salao, Faial, Azores. The only place I currently
have a stumbling block is from the Azores her to the USA to the time she
married.

Good luck on your search,

The only info that I have, is her name is Maria Furtado, and she was my
Father's Godmother. So, that would be her married name. The picture is
WWII era, maybe 1942. She would be at least 30 years older than my
Father. By looking at the picture she is in her 60's or 70's.

My Father was born in 1912, in Pleasanton. So I'm guessing that his
christening was soon after his birth.

I'm not finding anything of her in Pleasanton. There is a Mary, but she
would be way too young to fit this picture.

The Furtado family that I'm trying to locate, would have lived in
Pleasanton between 1900 and 1960. So far no luck. But I have written the
Catholic Church in Pleasanton and hoping they will give me his name.

I'll let you know what I find.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with on obit please - Victorina Rosa

2012-11-01 Thread Margaret Vicente
Diane,

A genealogist may have some recommendations but I would start by
searching for her birth record to confirm parents. Check for this
couple's children's birth records starting from Sep 16th, date of her
death which could have been due to childbirth. You may be able to
obtain information from godparents names that could point in the right
direction. Also their marriage record if you don't already have it.

Middle names are a marker but not always accurate. I have a ggmother
that ended up with 3 different middle names.

would have been 28 when she died and she belonged to that parish. So all
the information is there except Constancia second name. She was Victorina

Rosa on her marriage record but I have found other records where the women
have been known by different middle names It's a bit of a mystery but I am

still suspicious about this one. Everything else seems to fit and I can't
 find her anywhere else.

The Pereira could have been left off Christiano's name because he picked
that up somewhere along the line. Victorina's father was a Machado too.

 Hi all,

Does anyone know if there were instances of mothers changing their 1st

names? Say from Anna to Maria? Am I just reading the Baptism records

 wrong?

Or just a totally different person? Here is one record example:

 http://culturacores.azores. gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-

There are others with same names were Anna is clearer.

 Thanks,

Victorina may have had grandchildren born in the Azores to her second son.
I haven't found them yet. My line were all born in Sydney and those

On further question: Was it common for couples to live together outside of

On further question: Was it common for couples to live together outside
of marriage in those villages? This family of mine were very devout
Catholics and if this is the right Victorina, it means that Christiano was
single with 2 very young children for about 10 years before he remarried.

 Thanks again.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Furtado in Pleasanton, CA

2012-11-01 Thread eric edgar
Ally,

St Augustine's is where all my children are baptized, communion etc. On
their records there is nothing more than a first and last name of the
godparents. I don't think it's likely that the records from 100 years ago
are any different.

The records for the Diocese of Oakland are kept at St Patricks Seminary in
Menlo Park. You can make appointments to research there. It could be a lot
of effort to find the same thing you already know.

I'd try a different approach. Godparents are usually the parents family
members or close family friends. Look at all the parents siblings,
grandparents etc

The most important information for this search is missing. You never stated
you father's name, or his parents names, where they came from or when they
arrived in the US.
