Hello Diane, My ggfather went to Africa from Sao Miguel at 20 years of age, a newlywed with a good reason to return, his wife. When I look at the passports it showed only 3 men leaving for Africa...why did he do it? We can only guess. I found this link

Mike, I was not able to find my ggrandmothers birth certificate, but her marriage said she was the daughter of her mother only. I was able to find a birth of another child by her mother, which gave me the grandparents. Keep looking for siblings, marriages until you are sure. Judi
