Today, for sure they are different names, but they are closely related. Antao is usually the older form and sometimes survived into the more modern era. But I have seen the priests interchange the names, like Jose for Joseph. But it really depends on whether a person kept or insisted on using

Hi Claire, Neil Teixeira here. You need to ID his correct name and village on Faial Island. I would first get a copy of his marriage record from which-ever Catholic Church he was married in. The Priest would have wanted the "exact" village he was born at & baptized in which exact Church.
