Hi Bella: I am doing some research for my husband's cousin. His name is
Melvin Silva, Jr. His grandfather was John Silva. I have managed to get a
copy of JOHN COSTA SILVA's death certificate here in California. It lists
John's parents as Thomas Silva from Azores and Mary E. from Azores.

This is what I have so far:
Thomas Silva X Maria "Mary" E. Costs:
CHILDREN
John Costa Silva
dob 2 Feb 1881, Faial, Azores (Don't know which village.), died 22 May
1954, Alameda County, California

Isabel Silva of San Leandro, California
Marianna Silva, Faial, Azores
Manuel Silva, Faial, Azores

So far I have looked in EVERY village for a Thomas Silva that had a son,
Joao who was born 2 Feb 1881. I haven't found anything.

If you should happen to find any info on these people, I would really

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] People with Faial ancestry

2016-01-03 Thread Bellla
Hi Donna, Yes, I have both names several times by the three Avo's - Furtado -
one was my paternal grandmothers dad originally from Sao Miguel and moved to
Faial. Others from north of the island. Dutra I have many. My maternal Vava has
Dutra back to D' Ultra. She is from Castelo Branco and her family goes back to
the Flanders Belgium folks. My other grandparents from Salao (before that
Cedros) have Dutras as well. I want to add, my records may not be that helpful
I only have a bit over 1000 and direct descendants (all my great grands so to
speak) back to 15/1600s. I have none of their siblings and only some of my
grts-grand children. I have been trying to fill in the siblings as it has been
challenging to be contacted by a DNA cousin only to try and figure out how we
connect. There are several hundred showing up as DNA cousins (my test was with
23andme) but we have to go back to 18-1500s to find who our mutual grandparents
are. A person here native to Faial that works on genealogy told me I have
"many, many, many cousins" all over Faial and the Azores because two of my
grandparents are from original families that arrived. It became overwhelming.
With my limited tree I will help if there is anything I can do but I don't go
online much, or visit groups regularly. I pop on FB more often now in the
Azores group, check my emai but even that sometimes a month has gone by before
I logged on. I stay very busy with life in Faial but am willing to share! :)

To maximize your help, transfer your DNA from 23andMe to FTDNA (if on the
v3 chip - tested between Nov 2010-Nov 2013). If you have tested outside of
those dates you'll have to order a new kit from FTDNA. The main sale ended
about 10 hours ago, but the coupons for $10 are good through Sunday at
11:59 pm CST (test is normally $99).

If your cousins have not DNA tested, they need to do so.

You can transfer your DNA from 23andMe to FTDNA only if it is the v.3 chip
(you tested with 23 and Me between Nov. 2010 and Nov. 2013

We have 1000+ people of Azorean descent who have tested with FTDNA.

Robert,

You then qualify to transfer to FTDNA for $39 (there is a free transfer,
but it's limited).

I believe the directions and the link to the transfer site are here:
https://goo.gl/mI4OEr

You may not get the results back until early next week (they need to sync
your DNA to the FTDNA database). If you upload/transfer this weekend, then
you'll get the results back midweek.

Hi, Cheri

After checking the raw data file, I have confirmed it was the V3 chip that
was used. The U7 was on my mother's side, which makes sense, since the
relative from Faial was on that side of the tree.

Hope this helps.

It is best to test the oldest generation. If the parent who has the Faial
ancestry is alive, test that person. If you have access to a sibling of the
grandparent generation, test that person. If not, you are it.

I don't know what company you tested with or approximate date you tested.
Or what type of DNA test you took. I need that information or I can't tell

Hi, Cheri

Only my siblings and I are left in the family so that is all we have to
choose from. Since I am a close descendant of my grandfather who came from
Faial, I would be the only one left. I had my DNA tested a couple of years
ago through 23andme.com and took their standard test, which produced a lot
of information. As for the specific type of test I took I am unsure but it
evaluated all 23 DNA strands. And it was U7 not U4 as I thought (I double
checked on the 23 and me site.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] People with Faial ancestry

2015-12-15 Thread Cheri Mello
Robert,

The only people eligible to transfer from 23 and Me are the people who
tested with the v3 chip that was used on tests sold between November 2010
and November 2013. There are a couple of ways to find out what chip was
used for your test other than simply the timeframe. One is size; v3 chip
files are about 7.83 MB where v2 and v4 chips are smaller. If you’re tech
savvy, you can unzip the file and check chromosomes: Chromosome 1 for v3
starts at 82154 (rs4477212) where v4 starts at 734462 (rs12564807) and v2
starts with position 742429 (rs3094315).

This chip is for Family Finder. This is autosomal DNA that transfers (given
the parameters above). Your Y or mtDNA haplogroup of U7 (you did not
specify) will not transfer.

If you fit the time frame (or can figure it out from the raw data file),
then it's $39 to transfer. No coupon codes for this.

If you don't fit the time frame, you will have to start fresh with FTDNA.
That's not a bad thing at all.

I know for sure my great, great grandfather was from Faial. The only DNA sample
I have is mine. I have the raw data. Is there a site available for upload?? I
also have a U4 marker which from what I understand is rare.

Thanks,
Robert

If you have your lineage going back to Faial, you really need to be DNA tested.
The Azores DNA Project doesn't have that many people with Faial ancestry
testing.

And if you think that just because NEPS has most of it online so there's no
point in DNA testing, yes there is.

1) Not everything is on NEPS
2) Humans read the records. They make mistakes.
3) Humans did the data entry into NEPS. Another chance to make a mistake.
4) You could match someone else and make a connection that wouldn't have
happened without the DNA. You'll have a new cousin and your match will be
forever thankful that you DNA tested.

The Family Finder is regularly $99, on sale for $89, and there are $10 off
coupons floating around. So it's $79 and then $9.95 for postage (includes
return postage back to Texas if you reside in America).
