Just a heads-up ... I spoke too soon, BAT still sometimes becomes
unresponsive when purging volumes. It's not at all clear to me why
except that it seems to be related to multiple pop-up notifications. I
still strongly suspect the problem is one of multiple simultaneous
app-modal dialogs.

I obviously would be interested in seeing the statistics, and unless you
take some precautions I would strongly suggest not running it on a
production environment.
If you do, nevertheless, want to try, at a minimum, I would create a new
database (named perhaps TestBacula. Then
