[Bacula-users] [bacula] manual tape mount necessary

2006-10-02 Thread Jürgen Heil
Hi everyone,

we have got some problems setting up Bacula correctly. We want to use two
tapes to make full backups every night. The problem we run into is, that
Bacula doesn't mount our tapes automatically before running the job. It
always gives us following message:

01-Oct 20:05 dump-sd: Please mount Volume QTAPE_TWO on Storage Device
QTapeStorage for Job QBACKUP-backup.2006-10-01_13.05.00

We always have to mount the tapes manually in order to get the scheduled
jobs started.

## Our storage daemon config in bacula-sd.conf:

Device {
  Name = QTapeStorage
  Media Type = VXA
  Archive Device = /dev/nst0
  LabelMedia = yes;
  AutomaticMount = yes;
  AlwaysOpen = no;
}

Can someone help us to solve this problem? We would be grateful for every
hint!!

Thanks in advance,

Juergen

I'm currently using backuppc and looking at bacula as an alternative
for better tape handling. However, I find the web interface of
backuppc to be very useful even though the backups themselves
are automated. In particular, a glance at the 'host summary'
screen shows a color-coded list where you immediately notice
any problems, you can browse through the backups and either
restore files or grab a file or tar/zip archive of multiple
files directly through the browser interface, and backuppc
has a concept of individual machine 'owners' that can browse
and restore their own files through the web interface as well
as request immediate backup runs - without being able to see
hosts other than their own. When someone needs a restore
they can probably still find a working browser. I don't think
I'd want to be trying to make an NX client work in that situation,
and it doesn't have a way to deliver files directly in any case.

Also, most places that would need web security and logins
are likely to already have such applications running under
apache so that probably isn't a real big issue.

[Bacula-users] bacula documentation - cloning jobs typo

2006-10-02 Thread radek madej
Hi Guys,
First of all - thanks for this great piece of software! And thanks for
adding a cloning option in recent version :) I think there's a typo in
current docs though. In 'configuring the director' section, in the
description of a 'run' setting there is an example string:
 run = Nightly-backup level=%s since=\%s\ storage=DDS-4
I think the level=%s got there by mistake and it should be:
 run = Nightly-backup level=%l since=\%s\ storage=DDS-4
(it worked for me and now I have beautiful clones on my other backuping
device! ;))
Best regards
Radek

[Bacula-users] Volume not being recycled?

2006-10-02 Thread Costyn van Dongen
Hi all,

Can anyone explain why this volume is not being recycled?

From 'list media':

VolumeName = za01
VolRetention = 950,400   (11 days)
LastWritten = 2006-08-06 13:45:57
Status = Used

And this tape was put in the changer last saturday, 2006-09-30. So the
time in between was a lot more. The current status is 'Used', which is
why Bacula refused to write to it:

Current Volume za01 not acceptable because:
1998 Volume za01 status is Used, but should be Append, Purged or Recycle.

I'm using Bacula Version: 1.38.7 (06 April 2006)

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Costyn van Dongen.

  Hello,

  As I previously wrote, working on a GUI solution is now one of my top
  priorities. We have discussed the problems and possible solutions for
  getting a good GUI interface for Bacula a number of times. I've thought
about
  all the possibilities, and there are a lot of them. Previously, I had
been
  leaning more towards a Python Qt interface, because Python is a nice
language
  and easy to program. Unfortunately, I haven't found any really good IDE
  (integrated development environment) for it, nor have I found any good
  documentation on the Python Qt interface. So I have abandoned this idea.

  Another idea that I have abandoned is developing a web application. There
are
  two reasons: 1. I find no user interface design tools for web based
  applications. 2. web applications are very problematic for security
minded
  people such as myself. I run a web server, but there is no way in the

give
  you a little bit of the reasoning behind the direction I am taking.

  So that is the brief background. There is obviously much more to it all,
but
  I'd like to get to the point, which is that I am now starting a new core
code
  project for Bacula to initially create a console GUI (combination of
  bconsole, gconsole, wx-console, and all the others). As a second step, it
  will evolve (or start a separate program) to including manangement job
  summary information such as bacula-web and similar programs.

  To do the project, I intend to use Kdevelop as the IDE, designer as the
GUI
  design tool (integrated into Kdevelop), C++, and Qt3 (later Qt4). I would
  also like it to use cmake, but expect that in the beginning it will use
  qmake.

  All this is a bit too much for me at one time, because all the pieces
  (Kdevelop, designer, Qt3, qmake or cmake) are all new to me, so I really
  would like to get some help from any of you who are experienced in these
  tools or who just want to help.

  A few notes about the project:
  - as mentioned above, it will be based on C++ and Qt
  - it will use Kdevelop, designer and qmake or cmake
  - it will be part of the base Bacula code, and hence in the bacula source
tree.
  - it will replace, gconsole and wx-console (i.e. they are depreciated)
  - it will be copyrighted by the Bacula project (for the moment me -- more
on
that in my status #2 concerning the future of the Bacula project).
  - it will serve as a test bed for defining a Bacula GUI API
  - it will be highly integrated with the Director, but nevertheless a
separate
program.
  - if I can get some help starting the project, I can imagine that we could
get
something quite functional with at least the capabilities of gconsole
(and
maybe wx-console) by the end of the year. If I have to do it alone, it
will
probably be mid-2007 before it becomes functional.

 Did you consider wx-python. There is Boa-constructor as the IDE, but
 apparently you lean very much towards QT. I'm mostly sad because you
 move away from Python, since I don't know any C++. OTOH I don't have
 time to pitch in, so I don't really have too much to say about it.
 I do hope you will find somebody who feels like helping. A GUI for
 Bacula is long overdue.

wxWidgets is too slow, clunky, not very pretty, and has no GUI interface
builder. Qt is the opposite of those. I wanted to use Qt Python, but there
is not a single book written on it, so I'm going with straight C++, which
simplifies my life somewhat.

The more I see of Qt designer (did the first exercise in the tutorial this
morning), the more I am impressed. 100 x better than glade. There is a lot
to learn, but at least you can group items after you insert them. glade
requires you to put either a horizontal or vertical container before you
begin inserting widgets, which is not at all intuitive for guys like me who
design bottom up rather than top down.

 All the best,

 Jo

 Migrating storage has always been the achilles heel of almost every *nix,
 with downtime invariably necessary - and that tends to be hard to schedule
 in a 24*7 enterprise or research environment.

 Does that permit image copies of volume snapshots?

No idea.

That's not what I meant by storage migration - which essentially is the
ability to allow filesystems to transfer themselves between physical
devices/arrays (think: hardware upgrades) without user intervention - it's
possible with LVM but takes some commandline juggling and is _extremely_
tedious (although less tedious than the alternatives) when there are
multiple Tb involved.

[Bacula-users] upgrade from 1.34 to 1.38

[Bacula-users] unneccesarry Error reports in VolumeToCatalog Verifies

2006-10-02 Thread Tobias Tiederle
Hi,

we have some unneccessary error reports after verifies (VolumeToCatalog):

01-Oct 21:36 FOO-dir:   /home/
01-Oct 21:36 FOO-dir:   /usr/

01-Oct 21:36 FOO-dir:   /root/
[...]
  Termination:*** Verify Error ***

I'm using onefs, because some of our mounted filesystems have to backed up with
different settings.
The warnings in the backup are expected (and were discussed here before).
The errors in the verify are a bit disturbing. All the files I backed up are
there (and ok) but I still get these errors.
What can I do about them? I'd really like to have a Verify OK at the bottom...

And since I'm writing anyway, I want to thank all the developers who
contributed to this great piece of software. I think it's the best backup
software for linux at the moment! Keep up the good work!

Regards,
Tobias Tiederle

Running 1.36.x and 1.38.x together is not supported. Sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't. Where backups are concerned, that's personally not
good enough for me. :)

 The warnings in the backup are expected (and were discussed here before).
 The errors in the verify are a bit disturbing. All the files I backed up are
there (and ok) but I still get these errors.
 What can I do about them? I'd really like to have a Verify OK at the
bottom...

Make sure you are running at least some version of 1.38.x, then
simplify the problem down to a single directory (special fileset) containing
only a couple of files, run the job, then run the verify save the job output,
then open a bug report (bugs.bacula.org) and include the job output and the
relevant parts of the bacula-dir.conf file (backup job resource and verify
resource). When you upload the job output and the conf data, please attach
them as .txt files so that they can be viewed directly from Mantis.

 And since I'm writing anyway, I want to thank all the developers who
contributed to this great piece of software. I think it's the best backup
software for linux at the moment! Keep up the good work!

Thanks.

[Bacula-users] Problem with PKI Signatures

2006-10-02 Thread Albert Ferran
Hi,

I'm trying to test bacula with encryption following this instructions
http://www.bacula.org/dev-manual/Bacula_Data_Encryption.html, but its
impossible for me.

I'm using bacula-1.38 source compiled with OpenSSL support, my bacula-fd
file in the client side is as follows:

#
# Default Bacula File Daemon Configuration file
#
#  For Bacula release 1.38.11 (28 June 2006) -- redhat Enterprise 3.0
#
# There is not much to change here except perhaps the
# File daemon Name to
#

#
# List Directors who are permitted to contact this File daemon
#
Director {
  Name = server-dir
  Password = pepe
}

#
# Global File daemon configuration specifications
#
FileDaemon { # this is me
  Name = client-fd
  FDport = 9102 # where we listen for the director
  WorkingDirectory = /var/bacula
  Pid Directory = /var/run
  Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 20

  PKI Signatures = Yes# Enable Data Signing
  PKI Encryption = Yes# Enable Data Encryption
  PKI Keypair = /etc/bacula/fd-example.pem# Public and Private Keys
  PKI Master Key = /etc/bacula/master.cert# ONLY the Public Key
}

# Send all messages except skipped files back to Director
Messages {
  Name = Standard
  director = server-dir = all, !skipped, !restored
}

But when I try to start the client, rises this error:

Starting the Bacula File daemon
02-Oct 14:53 bacula-fd: ERROR TERMINATION at parse_conf.c:853
Config error: Keyword PKISignatures not permitted in this resource.
Perhaps you left the trailing brace off of the previous resource.
: line 37, col 15 of file /etc/bacula/bacula-fd.conf
PKI Signatures = Yes

Obviously I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what

Albert.

I suspect the features you are using are only available in CVS, not
released code, such as 1.38. I conclude that with this Google search
which shows only the dev-manual: PKI Signatures site:bacula.org

If you want the latest CVS snapshot, you can get it from
http://www.langille.org/bacula-snapshot.tgz

I think he must have done that already, because otherwise bacula would fail on

The problem may be that moving from 1.34 (database version 7) to 1.38
(database version 9) almost certainly requires two update scripts, 7_to_8
followed by 8_to_9. Only the 8_to_9 is installed as update_bacula_tables, so
the 7_to_8 script has to be taken from the updatedb directory of the source
tree.

If this is what you mean, you can limit number of jobs that will be
written into a single volume (once?), or the allowed time to write
into a volume since the volume was written into for the first time
(anything from less than 1 day to 5.9 months), for example.

I propably would use the latter one, set it to eg. 1 day. This way
you can run any number of jobs in your once in 6 mo set as
long as they'll finish in a total of 24 hours. After this period expires,
Bacula won't write again into the same volume.
Bacula manual is your friend :-)

Re: [Bacula-users] Volume not being recycled?

Hi,

On 10/2/2006 10:49 AM, Costyn van Dongen wrote:

 Can anyone explain why this volume is not being recycled?

From 'list media':

 VolumeName = za01
 VolRetention = 950,400   (11 days)
 LastWritten = 2006-08-06 13:45:57
 Status = Used

That's because the volume is not yet pruned which happens only if Bacula
decides it has to be pruned.

Have you set all the relevant retention times (client, pool) and is
automatic pruning enabled?

 I'm using Bacula Version: 1.38.7 (06 April 2006)

Well, for me, automatic pruning has been working since my first contact
with Bacula, so I suspect that there's something wrong in your
configuration.

Arno

 Thanks in advance.

 Kind regards,

 Costyn van Dongen.

Re: [Bacula-users] [Bacula-devel] GUI interface

2006-10-02 Thread Julián Hernández Gómez
Hi Kern!

I'm +1 on the choose of QT as the primary framework for developing the
bacula GUI. But I strongly suggest to use QT4 (4.2) from the beginning
and save everybody from the pain of a later migration.

I also recommends you reconsider the PyQT option, because it's a
really good option and has a lot of documentation:

First I recommend you reading the excellent overview of PyQt4 that was
presented at EuroPython 2006 [0], then look at all the info found in
the PyQT wiki [1] including a reference to a lot of nice tutorials,
including Boudewijn Rempt's book GUI Programming with Python: Qt
Edition available online in the PyQT homepage [2]. Also I think that
the way to go with PyQT is to read the Qt Documentation (including the
Qt Designer Manual) and then read the PyQT reference guide [3] (the
examples shown in this guide often refers to the QT Documentation for
a full description).

In case you still want to not use PyQT :-) I'd suggest the revision of
the source code of fwbuilder [4]. Fwbuilder is an excellent GUI
program (GPL) made in C++, QT3 and uses QT Designer. Maybe it's a
good starting point for developing the Bacula GUI.

I run a web server, but there is no way in the
 world
   that I would run a Bacula web application on my web server. In the past,
 I
   have gotten around this by having a second LAN only server, but I don't
   really like this. In addition with technology such as FreeNX, I believe
 that
   there is no disadvantage to writing desktop GUI applications -- they can
 now
   be executed from anywhere much like a web application can.

   One can certainly argue with the above points, but that is pretty much
 useless
   because what I am writing is not to convince you about my views but to
 give
   you a little bit of the reasoning behind the direction I am taking.

Re: [Bacula-users] Problem with PKI Signatures

I've tried with CVS snapshot and I've got the same error

Hi,

I'm trying to test bacula with encryption following this instructions
http://www.bacula.org/dev-manual/Bacula_Data_Encryption.html, but its
impossible for me.

I'm using bacula-1.38 source compiled with OpenSSL support, my bacula-fd
file in the client side is as follows:

#
# Default Bacula File Daemon Configuration file
#
#  For Bacula release 1.38.11 (28 June 2006) -- redhat Enterprise 3.0
#
# There is not much to change here except perhaps the
# File daemon Name to

#
# List Directors who are permitted to contact this File daemon
#
Director {
  Name = server-dir
  Password = "pepe"
}

#
# "Global" File daemon configuration specifications
#
FileDaemon { # this is me
  Name = client-fd
  FDport = 9102 # where we listen for the director
  WorkingDirectory = /var/bacula
  Pid Directory = /var/run
  Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 20

  PKI Signatures = Yes# Enable Data Signing
  PKI Encryption = Yes# Enable Data Encryption
  PKI Keypair = "/etc/bacula/fd-example.pem"# Public and Private Keys
  PKI Master Key = "/etc/bacula/master.cert"# ONLY the Public Key
}

# Send all messages except skipped files back to Director
Messages {
  Name = Standard
  director = server-dir = all, !skipped, !restored
}

But when I try to start the client, rises this error:

Starting the Bacula File daemon
02-Oct 14:53 bacula-fd: ERROR TERMINATION at parse_conf.c:853
Config error: Keyword "PKISignatures" not permitted in this resource.
Perhaps you left the trailing brace off of the previous resource.
: line 37, col 15 of file /etc/bacula/bacula-fd.conf
PKI Signatures = Yes

Obviously I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what

I suspect the features you are using are only available in CVS, not
released code, such as 1.38. I conclude that with this Google search
which shows only the dev-manual: "PKI Signatures" site:bacula.org

If you want the latest CVS snapshot, you can get it from
http://www.langille.org/bacula-snapshot.tgz

[Bacula-users] How to handle Client disconnect

2006-10-02 Thread Support
Dear All

What is the best method to handle a client disconnect?

I have had a few instances where the director has lost connection with the
client while either spooling data to disc prior to writing to tape or when
the data is being written to tape.

The problem is that the cancel option in the console tries to attach to
the client prior to canceling the job but the client cannot be connected.
There seems to be no kill option like kill -9 PID in *nix. This has caused
other jobs in the Running Jobs to wait forever - I have not waited long
enough to see if the Max Start Delay is activated.

My only fix is to restart the processes on the server that is bacula
restart. Is there another way to kill the job and still maintain the
existing jobs in the Running Jobs.

The other problem I have noticed when writing to tape and the
disconnection occurs is the volume and catalog are out by 2 - is this due
to the update frequency of the catalog?

Thanks to all
Stephen Carr

[Bacula-users] btape won't autoload for TL892 on Solaris 10?

2006-10-02 Thread Alan Davis
I'm configuring bacula 1.39.22 on Solaris 10 x86 on an IBM e345 with a
Compaq TL892 library, 2 TZ89 DLT drives w/ 1 TL800 robot. I've been
using a combination of the Bacula manual and Dan Langille's articles to
work out the nuances of the Storage clause for the bacula-sd.conf file.

I'm getting 2 unexpected results from btape fill. It doesn't autoload
the next tape and it hangs after reading the first 1 records from
the first tape.

Where can I start looking to resolve the problems? Is the no autoload a
problem because I don't have a storage pool defined with appendable
volumes or is it a device configuration problem?

The btape test command says that my settings are ok, and the autochanger
section of btape also works as expected.

The btape fill command takes about 2 hours to fill the DLTIV tape using
the /dev/rmt/0cbn device. When it reaches the end of the first tape I
get this (debug is set to 99):

I used mtx in another session to unload the first tape and load the
second. The test continued normally, successfully loading, labeling and
writing to the second tape and then a similar message and the prompt to
reload the first tape.

The process then seems to hang after reading the first 1 records :
