Re: [Bacula-users] FD Error On Backup

2009-03-05 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Isn't there a way that this can be done manually? The problem that I have on
my side is that according to the director the job failed but it picks up
that there was data transfer and according to the FD the job was successful,
now even though the DIR recons it was a failed job the files are on the tape
- now the question is how to get it off in a restore or how can I import
the client status into the DIR so that I can restore those files?

Strangely these errors only occur on the Dell PE 2950 with MS Windows Server
2003 x86 and x64 but not on the Linux counter part with the same hardware -
which brings to mind the age old question which is better at the end Linux
or Windows? In my mind there is actually no comparison, if I could I would
go Linux all the way.

We set up the heartbeat for any client-server session that exists over a
firewall (which more often than not time out long-running sessions with
little or no traffic) or trouble router.

I would love it if the director-fd relationship could be re-established
in the event of network failures. I.e., the director realizes that it's
connection to the fd has failed, so it re-establishes it at a later time
to find out the status of a backup job or retrieve messages.

Re: [Bacula-users] FD Error On Backup

2009-03-05 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Please correct me if I'm wrong? The way that I understand it is that when
you set a heartbeat interval in the director, the director will keep the
connection open, for the specified time, for each client, is that correct?
Now if my previous statement is correct, is it necessary to specify a
heartbeat interval in the FD or doesn't matter where you specify it?

Re: [Bacula-users] Removable HDD backup

2007-12-13 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Hi,

What I've done is the following:

I've got 5 External USB HDD, one for Monday, one for Tuesday etc and
have set up pools and jobs accordingly e.g. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
etc.

I've added a RunBeforeJob script to Mount the HDD to a dir
called /opt/Backup

Once the entire backup of the {WeekDay} Pool has completed the HDD is
unmounted by a RunAfterJob script so that the user can just go and
unplug the one HDD and plug in the next without having to umount and
remount the HDDs.

The only downside of doing this is that you have to have a job for every
machine and x the amount of pools e.g. in my scenario I have 12 machines
and 5 pools so the amount of jobs specified = 60 but it works.

My run before job looks something like:

mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb /opt/Backup

Run After Job:
umount /opt/Backup

If you have a better way please let me know

Subject: [Bacula-users] Removable HDD backup

Tonight, on IRC, we solved the following problem (original posted to
http://www.nabble.com/Removable-HDD-backup-to14286773.html):

My goal is to have bacula backup onto an external HDD source that
rotates. As in, there are three HDDs in rotation and at least one
different HDD is put into the server every night. The other two HDDs
are off somewhere safe. I need bacula to backup onto each HDD in such
a way that a any of the HDDs will restore most of the files (as recent
as it can be with the rotation schedule).

Now I'm not sure if I should make bacula have more than one volume or
if it can auto create volumes when another blank drive is present...
  any suggestions would be excellent.

After concluding Bacula can't do this without Bacula knowing what was on
each given HDD. I figured it could be done but it would be messy. It
would involve three different FileSet definitions for each client, etc...

Then the original figured we could just backup to local fixed HDD, then
copy the Bacula volumes over to the HDD. I suggested rsync instead.

This solution has the great features of always having a complete backup
set local and at least two complete copies of the Volumes offsite at all
times.

We all thought we should post this for the archives. A very simple
solution. Suggestions welcome though.

Re: [Bacula-users] Removable HDD backup

2007-12-13 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Hi,

I have a configuration with the following:

5 x 500GB External USB HDD in a 5 day rotation
Each HDD is automatically mounted and unmounted so that the user can
just unplug the used HDD and plug in the new one.

This works well except that in order for this to work I had to create 5
pools for each working day {Monday - Friday} and I had to create a job
per machine per pool so I ended up with 60 jobs in my Bacula conf
because I have 12 machines.

I have a Run Before Job that mounts the External HDDs to the /opt/Backup
directory and after the backup is complete the Run After Job unmounts
the HDD.

If anyone has a better way of doing this please let me or if you want to
take a look at my conf let me know

Re: [Bacula-users] Postgres Dump command fails

2007-12-13 Thread Janco van der Merwe
When the pg_dump command is run manually it works. My pg_hba.conf is set
to allow all local users full access to the bacula DB

What now?

If you issue that command from the command line, does it succeed?

By the way, if non-trusted users are on this system, and even if they
aren't, you can avoid having the password in this email by using .pgpass
in Bacula's home dir:

They should all be simliar permissions for the bacula user.

[Bacula-users] Tape Drive Issue

2007-11-27 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Hi,

I have a strange problem and hop that someone will be able to help me

Bacula Version: 2.0.5
OS: Fedora Core 6
Tape Drive: IBM ULTRIUM-TD3 DLT VS 160

I've set the automatic labelling of volumes and it would appear that it
is working until the tape is ejected and inserted again. It is if there
is no data on the tape when it is inserted again but here is the funny
thing, when you manually label the the tape and bacula sends you the
label conformation everything is ok, I mean you write to the tape,
restore from the tape, unmount and remount the tape and the everything
works except when you physically eject the tape, all data, it would
seem. is lost.

This happens to all the tapes and I'm really confused as to why
something like this will happen especially only when the tape is
ejected. According to Bacula the backups to this tape went through
successfully, not that I think this is a bacula problem, but I don't
really know where to start looking for a solution.

Has anyone else had this problem before?

Re: [Bacula-users] All the problems with Bacula

2007-11-21 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Shon,

If it took you four months to figure out how Bacula works maybe you
shouldn't be allowed near any computer!

There are ways and means to do things in Bacula and let me tell you this
if you couldn't do it or find a way you are really incompetent and again
should be allowed to operate a PC.

I have Bacula running at several sites without a glitch and backing up
over 1 TB of data on one site with a LTO3 Autoloader, and BTW this was
done when I was still a novice in the Linux World, so if I could do it
anyone canwell it looks like you're the excpetion not the
rule.

On the Windows side of things there are no problems, I've backuped and
restored several machine using Bacula and the Bart PE and with great
success.

Basically I can't see that its useable for anything more than backing up
a single system, and even then better be careful.WHAT, ARE YOU
OUT OF FREAKING MIND, YOU NUMB SKULL, here is a tip and I'll try to do
this in a language that you might understand
LEARN.HOWTOUSE.A..COMPUTER

You know what Bacula Usersgood riddance to bad trash and lastely
he'll 10 to 1 make a [EMAIL PROTECTED] up of the other software as well!

Bacula is incredibly complex to setup. Its taken 4 months and its
 still not working correctly.

Things that should be easy that Bacula makes overly complex:

 Labeling tapes
 Assigning tapes to pools
 Reassigning tapes to pools
 Managing disk media

Things Bacula can't seem to get right:

Detecting a tape is in the drive and using it
Even though the correctly labeled tape is in the drive, and has the
right Volume label, and is marked Append, and is from the correct
 Pool
Bacula is still waiting for a mount request. Every external program
recognizes that the tape is in the drive and mounted. Not Bacula

Catalog entries. I've not had a single backup job where the right
entries made it into the Catalog

Windows hosts. Good luck figuring out the esoteric path syntax because
its different in different chapters of the manual and also different
depending on which part of the config you are editing

Basically I can't see that its useable for anything more than backing
up a single system, and even then better be careful.

I'm going with Arkeia Network Backup. Might cost money, but at least
it will work as advertised which is more than can be said for Crapula

Guys,

Sorry, but - there must be a but - I deal with this sort of people
everyday and it has come to a point where being nice and keeping quite
is not a solutions anymore.

Ok, I do understand that Bacula can be difficult some times but that is
why this list is theream I wrong?

I also have had blonde moments and posted it to top it all but at
least I got an answer from a lot more patient people than I, the point
being, I did a quick search and did not find any posts from this guy
asking for help, if I'm wrong on this one please excuse me, and now
lashing out on the listis just not on, I don't know maybe I'm wrong.

Shon, I apologize sincerely and would like nothing more for you stay
with Bacula because it is a brilliant backup solutions, hell I have
backed up an entire Windows Domain Controller and restored it as it was
and put that exact machine live whilst I reloaded the old DC.

Once again I apologize.

 Janco, calm down please!

Even if you or others don't agree with Shon don't resort to name-calling!

Bacula as a whole - and that includes the user community we find here
 - works also (and in my opinion, mainly) because we try to solve
 problems politely.

I, too, probably sound a bit harsh from time to time, but I really try
not to insult anyone. Please try to do the same.

And then let's see if Shon wants some more directed support later - he
wouldn't be the first struggling with the great flexibility Bacula
offers. Then we can put some effort into getting him a working Bacula
 system.

That would be much better than starting a flame war, I think. And I
 hope you all agree :-)

[Bacula-users] Using bsr files to restore / re-catalog DB

2007-10-29 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Hi,

I hope someone can help me with this one.

Someone approached me to help with their Bacula but the guy who set it
up has left and they are in a bit of a sticky situation.

First the nitty gritty:
Bacula 1.38.1 with MySQL
RHEL 4
Using a Dell PV-124T with LTO3

These people have different backups pools namely -
Daily with 10 volumes
Weekly with 4 volumes
Monthly with 36 volumes and should have had a volume retention period of
1095 days because they keep the Monthly backups for three years

The client wants to restore a file on a volume that is 1 year old and
because the File, job and volume retentions were specified incorrectly
the entire job was purged from the catalog, a long with other monthly
backup jobs, and I have no reference of those Volumes or jobs in the
catalog except for the bsr files.

Is there a way that I can restore files from that volume using the bsr
files or one better, can I use the bsr files to rebuild the catalog and
set the correct retention periods where applicable and if that is
possible how will I go about doing it?

I tried searching the net, the user list and the manual for similar
situations but was unable to find anything.

Can anyone help me or GENTLY point out that it is in the manual and that
I missed it?

Re: [Bacula-users] 2.2.4 ok to run?

2007-10-26 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Michael,

I tried replying to the mail that you sent last night but shortly after
we had power failures but in short:

We run Bacula 2.2.5 with Postgres 8.1.4 Release 1.1 (The version on the
DVD) and had no problems.

My colleague seems to think, from the errors that you received, that you
require certain libs or that the versions of your postgres,
postgres_server and postgres_devel differ or, again from the error, that
the version 8.2.x is not compatible with Bacula - I don't know going on
what he said!

system is backed up and restored on another except if the hardware was
  the same.

My whole idea is to try to introduce high availability so if one
server goes down we can start the other, most probably a VM, and carry
on as if nothing happened until we get the original server back up and
running. I know that there are Server Mirroring Software out there
but they cost a lot and in a company with a tight budgetwell you
  know the rest.

rsync? Between the two servers. But still use Bacula for backups.
rsync is not a backup. It is a copy.
The rsync was only an idea, maybe an ambitious idea, but an idea never
the less. I went on the Search for Open Source HA software and came
across this: http://www.drbd.org/. Hopefully this will do the Job.
Backups aren't my main concern because Bacula has that covered, what I
was looking for was something that had HA capabilities and I hoped
Bacula had something like that but have a look at the URLquite
interesting.

Re: [Bacula-users] Single Director Daemon with multiples Storage Daemons

2007-10-12 Thread Janco van der Merwe
I know it's actually incredible but is there a way of only compiling the
SD and FD binaries, reason why I'm asking is that in order to get the SD
installed I had to compile the entire Bacula which meant installing a
DB, not that its that big of an issue I was just wondering if there is
way or an option like --with-storage-only?

But Bacula is the best written Software I have ever had the pleasure of
working with!!

[Bacula-users] FD - SD Error

2007-08-01 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Hi Guys,

I have the following:

30-Jul 02:01 subver-dir: Start Backup JobId 57,
Job=sqlengine.2007-07-30_02.00.01
30-Jul 02:01 subver-sd: Volume Daily_Backup-0002 previously written,

Error: ../../lib/bnet.c:406 Write error sending len to Storage
daemon:subver:9103: ERR=Input/output error

I have my suspicions about what this could be but I need expert opinions
before I brake something.

The set up: The machine sqlengine is in a DMZ and a Linux Firewall
using IPtables is suppose to NAT everything over ports 9101-9103 to the
internal LAN Bacula server address, subver, but it seems that something
isn't working as it should. I can use the bconsole from sqlengine to
subver if that is anything to go by.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Bacula-users] FD - SD Error

2007-08-01 Thread Janco van der Merwe
I can telnet to all the bacula ports from the sqlengine machine and I
ran a tcpdump to monitor the packets from the sqlengine machine to the
bacula server and all is OK.

I don't think it's the Firewall anymore, I realized with a shock that
the SQL backup is over 30GB and I didn't configure my Bacula with Large
File support during the install so that I think is the problem. Do you
know how I can enable large file support without having to re compile
again?

Seems to indicate possible firewall or the fd (client) can't reach the
SD on it's specific port. Can you telnet from the client to the SD on
port 9103? That should indicate if you have it blocked or not.

[Bacula-users] Schedules

2007-01-09 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Hi,

I hope someone can help me.

First the nitty gritty stuff:
Bacula 1.38.11
RHEL 4

What I want to do is create a monthly schedule that runs every 2nd Tuesday of
the month but we have a daily schedule that runs Monday - Friday is there a way
that I can tell Bacula not to do a Daily on the 2nd Tuesday of a month.

I have the correct configuration for the monthly and daily schedule but they
run simultaneous which takes up a lot of time.

I would appreciate it if any body can tell me what I have to do so that the
daily runs as normal but doesn't run on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. That is
aal I need the rest has already been done but I'm struggling a little with this
one.

Volume Use Duration = 23 hours

Reason I have the Volume Use Duration = 23 hours is because we
have an Auto Changer and I want it to write to one tape per day but there are 2
schedules:

Schedule {

}

Schedule {

Now the problem is when I run the status dir in the console
the output is as follows:

As you can see the 12:00 schedule ran using Volume 01L3
and the 21:00 should also use Volume 01L3 but shouldnt the volume be
marked as used before the next 12:00 schedule runs? Please look at the
Scheduled column what I basically want is for the jobs that are scheduled for
the 18th should have a different volume label and the way that I
understood is that if I use the Volume Use Duration that will be my solution. Does
it have something to do with my volume retention period?

[Bacula-users] Strange behavior

2006-10-13 Thread Janco van der Merwe

Hi,

After I changed scheduled I started receiving these
messages:

13-Oct 12:00 brutus-dir:
Start Backup JobId 281, Job=Fas000s.2006-10-13_12.00.00 13-Oct 12:00 brutus-sd:

13-Oct 12:00 brutus-sd:
Fas000s.2006-10-13_12.00.00 Error: Error writing final EOF to tape. This Volume
may not be readable.

13-Oct 12:00 brutus-sd: End
of medium on Volume 02L3 Bytes=435,445,422,908 Blocks=6,749,843
at 13-Oct-2006 12:00.

I know this because the
volume is not in the drive because I ejected the volume but I ran a update
slots command in the bconsole and usually helped.

What happened was that I was requested to change the backup
time from 21:00 in the evening to 12:00 during the day for some servers and
since then I have been receiving these logs. The jobs execute as normal but I
received these messages.

Is it because that the Volume 02L3
was used @ 12:00 yesterday and again @ 21:00 last night and it wants the volume
again for the latest backup? My current Use Volume duration 23 hours, shouldnt
the tape be set as used or should the Volume duration be less perhaps? The
reason for the Volume duration is because we have Autochanger and we want the
daily backups on a separate tape for each day.

[Bacula-users] Bacula and Softlinks

2006-10-10 Thread Janco van der Merwe

Hi,

Before wasting valuable time in testing can someone tell me
how Bacula will react with softlinks? Is it worth going that route? To give you
an idea on the one server it has 3 partitions and the aim is to backup the last
3 months of data but the twist is that the directories and partitions of where
the data is will change from month to month. What we thought is creating a backup
dir on the / partition and then a script that creates softlinks to the required
directories within the /backup dir which brings me to the above question will Bacula
follow the softlinks?

Re: [Bacula-users] Compression ratio

2006-09-27 Thread Janco van der Merwe
By Client compression do you mean the Compression=GZIP or the default
compression? My Bacula is pretty much still default nothing special at this
pointwell apart from the amount of data being backed up. If it is not
possible at this point is there a possibility in the near future for Bacula to
include the ratio, by that I mean will it be possible for the Bacula to include
the ratio from the Hardware?

Bacula provides the compression ratio if you turn on Client compression, which
I don't recommend especially with the results you are getting. With hardware
compression, Bacula has insufficient information.

[Bacula-users] Amazing

2006-09-26 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Once again Bacula amazed me Please see the Last Volume Bytes section of
the Bacula e-mail sent to me. This is on a LTO 3 which you all know is 800 GB
max compressed. What amazed me more is that I restored the data and all is
working.

I had the same with my AIT but that was 295GB on a 260GB but thisthis

Re: [Bacula-users] Forcing use of next tape in Autochanger

2006-09-21 Thread Janco van der Merwe
Is there a script that can be written so that when the last job is complete
Bacula automatically unloads the tape to it original slot and mount a new tape
from a different slot? Reason I ask is that I have the same question but I
don’t know what the variables will be for such a script, I mean how will you
tell Bacula that if it wrote on tape 0001 from slot one after the job is
complete to move tape 0001 back to slot 1 and load tape 0004 from slot 2 or
next available slot into the archive device automatically?

Do any of you know what variables will be used i.e. run after job {mtx-changer
/dev/sg1 unload $[originalslot] then mtx-changer /dev/sg1 load $[newslot]
/dev/st0 0}?

My problem is that I don't really want it to continue backing up to one
tape until it's full. I am backing up about 100GB / night, and native
capacity of an LTO-3 tape is 400GB, up to 800GB with compression. I am
not comfortable having that many days worth of data on one tape and would
like to be able to tell bacula to switch to the next tape.

I believe I have found a way to do it manually, by using update volume
in bconsole and changing that media_id's value from append to full,
but I would rather this happen some way without my having to do that every
 day.

If the answer to this is in the docs, I have missed it. Is there an
easier way to handle this issue programmagically?

Check out the Volume Use Duration option under:
http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/Configuring_Director.html#SECTION000141

Something like 'Volume Use Duration = 24h' should work if added to your
Pools definition.

Re: [Bacula-users] Autoloaders

2006-09-13 Thread Janco van der Merwe
We have a 2.6 Kernel and running RHEL 4, we installed the sg3 utils, ran the
modprobe sg and everything, but there is no sg under /dev. If I run the
hardware browser I can see the PV-124T as /dev/sg3 and the LTO device as
/dev/sg2, the backplane as /dev/sg0 and the scsi adapter as /dev/sg1 but like I
said nothing under /dev with sg. You know what I'm to re-install, we got the
server pre-installed and people messed with the machine prior to me loading
Bacula.

Thanks for the help I appreciated it.

[Bacula-users] Autoloaders

2006-09-12 Thread Janco van der Merwe

Hi,

Im going to ask a really dumb question now, so please
bear with me. We just bought a Dell Power Vault 124 with a LTO 3 now the
problem is that I dont know what device the autoloader is specified in /dev.

I have a nst0, nst0a, nst0l, nst0m as well as st0, st0a, st0l
and st0m. At least I know what the difference between nst0 and st0 is but I dont
know which one of the rest is the autoloader ???

The best thing is I just got to grips with Bacula and the
AIT and now I have to do everything over again but this time on RHEL 4 and the
Dell Autoloader, at least Bacula is easy but the hardware through a curve ball.

HELP???

First you need to be sure that you have the PV-124T correctly connected.
I bought my PV-124T with a adaptec board scsi with it.
First be sure that the board is recognized by linux.

I didn't understand you message quite well. Does your cat

Notice the 2 last scsi hosts.
If you can get this, then your loader is correctly recognized. And If
so, you can run the code i sent you on my previous message, in a bash
 console.

If not, then probably the tapeloader isn't correctly recognized.
What scsi board is your tapeloader connected to?

 Tell me what you got.

Vodacom still has the e-mail to SMS but that is limited to 6 a day which will
work but we are currently using the MTN network with our Zabbix which is on
another machine and I hoped that there was a possibility that I could some how
configure Bacula to use Zabbix which will solve this but I mean this is not a

Many years ago MTN networks used to run a email-SMS gateway (which

[Bacula-users] WOW

2006-09-09 Thread Janco van der Merwe

Hi,

I've got a couple of questions but first I would like to say that Bacula is something incredible! We are currently backing up 6 servers and the total amount of data is 295GB and the best of all Bacula is writing all this data to an AIT 3 tape which can actually, I don't know a lot about tapes but usually the info given is correct, only take 260 GB compressed and when I saw the amount of data on the tape and Bacula did not ask for a second tape, I thought oh shit the data is damaged so I restored it and to my amazement it was perfectly fine!

My question is, is it normal to take round about 13 hours to backup the data? What I mean isif you take each separate job and you compare it to the time that Ultrabac took you notice that Bacula takes 4 -5 times longer to backup the individual job.Any ideas why, DB maybe?

My second question is, would it be possible to hook Bacula up to the monitoring package, Zabbix,to send out a sms/text message every time a job succeeds/fails or can Bacula do it if you hook it up to a GPRS modem?

And then lastly,as you might come to realize my knowledge of backups is quite dangerous and I'm still learning. Can someone explain to me how did Bacula backup 295 GB to a tape that is suppose to take 260GB. 90% of the Servers are Windows Servers and very little data is text based so how in the hell did it do it without corrupting the Data???

To the developers.A JOB WELL DONE!

In your case, you got 2.95:1 (or more) - thats totally possible depending on your data. Its not just text data thats highly compressible - some types of email data, database data can also be highly compressible...--Matt

Kern,

Okay I see your point, I'm sorry, the day just started @#$!@ and your e-mail
was not what I really expected and it was the last straw, in a way of speaking.
Please remember that coming from a MS background I found it quite difficult to
do things the right way and I missed the quotation marks in the manual, yes it
was my fault no need to rub it in at this point, but it was a valuable lesson.
I never intended to discourage you or to be judgmental but like I said I just
needed someone to smack me in the right direction which you did, I know that
now, but all that I'm trying to say is sorry and thank you and please remember
that there are a lot of other idiots like me out there so patience is a virtue
if not you can always go visit your local Bar or gunshop (:

Hi Kern,

Sorry for the inconvenience but the manual only tells what to do from the
source and not if you download a rpm, but I went and downloaded the source and
chanana how's your mother or should I say bob's your uncle and suzie is your
auntie it worked. I had some problems with the configure but only to realize
that it was my stupidity, let's keep that between us, but ja after that was
done most of my questions were answered.
