Ontbirders
Most of you have read the recent message about the resumption of the
cull of Double-crested Cormorants at Middle Island by Parks Canada. It
is an important and contentious issue that we should be aware of.
Information about the cull has been posted by Parks Canada (April 2008)

On Tuesday evening I observed a male peregrine falcon hunting over my backyard
and neighborhood at York and Union St. on the border of Kitchener and
Waterloo. It was first seen at about 5:30 pm. After disappearing for a few
minutes it reappeared and roosted on the northwest corner of the Sun
Hi all,
While on way home from work yesterday I observed 2 pairs of
Osprey chasing each other around the Aurora nest site I reported
earlier. It looks like an other pair is trying to take over the site??
This was just after 5pm.

Sigi

Hi Ontbirders,
I saw an adult Golden Eagle flying east, low over my yard at the north
end of Brighton this morning, at about 930 a.m. While I get an east
to west hawk flight over my yard in fall, spring raptors are much less
frequent or directionally focused. This is my first spring
Yesterday at noon, while searching for the recently reported two Cooper’s
Hawks, at Colonel Samuel Smith Park, I instead found four Black-crowned
Night-herons roosting in the tall spruce southeast of the large chimney between
the walkway and the small creek.
Colonel Samuel Smith Park is at
There were only a few small gulls at Oshawa Second Marsh at 3pm today,
Thursday, April 16, but 8 of them were Little Gulls, almost outnumbering the
Boneys! They were flying round the marsh, perching on logs in the water,
then flying up again, giving their high kek-kek calls. Presumably there were
Today at 3:00 PM, there was a first year male King Eider off the beach at
Colonel Sam Smith Park in Toronto.
Sam Smith is south of the foot of Kipling Ave. Follow Kipling to the south as
far as it will go and from the southernmost parking lot, walk south to the
lake. The Eider was near the
I took a tour of the Ottawa region, visiting several hotspots throughout the
area. Near the Airport I relocated the WILSON'S SNIPE I reported last night.
In the same vicinity were two KILLDEER. The E. MEADOWLARK was heard again from
High Road, and I am pleased to report that four SAVANNAH

Greetings!
Another lovely day for it.
We also saw the King Eider (looking more bulbous) along with the Common
Mergansers. Also in the same bay were two Common Loons.
We also went to Humber Bay East, lots of the usual migrants for this time of
year.
At High Park were the Wood Ducks who were

It is with extreme sadness that I report the sudden passing of Jim Fairchild.
Jim was well known to many Ontario birders and his friendship and birding
expertise will be sadly missed
Because of unfavourable winds for the past week, the migration at
Presqu'ile Provincial Park can not be characterized as more than a
trickle. Yet, most of the expected arrivals have been reported at least
once, and the shift in wind direction to the south in the past few hours
bodes well for

Hi folks.
Pat and I spent the last two days (away from e-mail) at a private home near
the southeast edge of Walker Woods. American Woodcocks were peenting and
performing their display flights both evenings (yesterday and the day
before). This morning, as we were visiting with a pair of Fox
Despite the continued north winds more migrants are arriving. There have
been several reports of Greater Yellowlegs, Golden-crowned Kinglets, Belted
Kingfishers, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, E. Towhees, Savannah Sparrows, and
Loggerhead Shrikes. There were 8 Rusty Blackbirds at Newburgh last Friday,
Hi all,
This afternoon I saw 2 of these birds at the big burn area towards
Burleigh bridge - very active whilst calling and drumming. Further down the
road a pair of E. Bluebird were likewise occupied and the presumably female
Bald Eagle was sitting tight on her new nest, which I first
