Birders, This afternoon I drove up to the field outside Guelph where Mike Cadman reported he and Bryan Wyatt saw an interesting gull yesterday. There were many gulls present: mostly Herring gulls, but also Ring-billed as well as Glaucous, Iceland and Great Black-backed. The birds were 100-200 m

[Ontbirds] Possible Slaty-backed Gull - maybe not(?)

2014-12-22 Thread Cadman,Mike [Burlington]
After viewing some photos of adult Slaty-backed Gull, I'm thinking the bird near Guelph may be too light on the back. Although it is certainly darker than adult Herring Gulls - it's about the colour of a Lesser black-back - it doesn't appear as dark as the birds in the Slaty-backed Gull photos.

There is a good candidate for Slaty-backed gull on the ice in Whitby harbour. Streaking on the head and neck, pink legs and about equal size to herring gulls. Could be a hybrid but it is currently one of two dark-mantled gulls in the flock and thus easy to spot. Directions to Whitby harbour fo
