After almost ten years living here, and spending thousands of hours birding in
the yard, I finally got my first WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS! But even more
amazingly I had SEVEN flocks fly over in just thirty minutes this morning. The

This morning at Prince Edward Point I observed three separate flocks of
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS (4, 7 35). There were many winter finches about
feeding on the road and practically at everyones bird feeder. I roughly
counted 25 PURPLE FINCHES, 20 COMMON REDPOLLS, 50 PINE SISKINS and 30
Saw three meadowlarks along the side of the St. David's Road. Second time in
about a week.
Directions: Follow straight through on #20 at Bismark, turn left on St.
David's Rd. Past the S curve that goes over the tracks and on the left side

Birded Amherst Island Saturday, January 10th and today, Sunday January 11th.
Conditions were excellent and we were still able to drive to the Owl Woods from
the South Shore Road. Both days were very successful in the woods with 3 Boreal

While on an Owl Walk with the Essex County F.N.C. that turned up 0
owls, we observed 350 (my estimate) to 500 (wife's estimate)
White-winged Crossbills at the Holiday Beach Conservation Area in Essex
County. They were actively feeding on the spruce cones surrounding the
pine plantation

There has been a flock of about a dozen White-winged Crossbills in the
Cathedral Pines area of Horseshoe Valley over the past two weeks. Last seen
yesterday about noon. Best located by their melodic call notes as they feed
in the Red Pines and Norway Spruces that frequent the area.

Today, my wife Lynne and I set out to see some snowy owls near Ste-Rose.
We had read about Concession road 20, and were greeted by one owl atop a
post between county road 8 and Ste-Rose road.
There was a sign with number 84 below the post. We drove around, and
saw four more scattered around.

On Friday I observed a Intersexual Mallard at the Miner Sanctuary just outside
the town of Kingsville.
This Duck had 100% male plumage and of course a female orange black bill.
