Total observation time: 4.75 hours

Official Counter:Cindy Isenhoff

Observers:Cramer, John Winebrenner, Lisa Silvey

Visitors:
Today had only John and Lisa from Indiana---no other visitors on this
dreary day.

Weather:
An overcast morning gave us about 20 minutes of partly sunny skies, and
eventually turned to steady rain in the 11am hour. Winds were out of the
South and very light. Temperatures were balmy for mid Oct, between 18C and
19.8C.The marsh was hazy this morning with visibility worsening when
the rain began. The count was shortened today after an hour and a half of
steady rain with no raptors we packed up for the day, since the hourly
forecast didn't have much hope for the daylight hour.

Raptor Observations:
Very little raptor movement today with only 4 species represented. Even
the Sharpies "took the day off" with only 8 moving through. Turkey
Vultures started in the window on partly sunny skies, but were quickly
thwarted by the rain.

Non-raptor Observations:
The duck population in the marsh is growing with large numbers of Mallards
and American Coot leading the way. Also noted today were a fair number of
American Wigeon and some Northern Pintail.
Blue Jays were moving nicely until the rain started, and several flocks of
Red-winged Blackbirds were also noted.
A few late Tree Swallows and Chimney Swifts came through, and a nice flock
of Kinglets, mostly Ruby crowned.

Predictions:
Chance of showers with mild temperatures and SSW winds.

[Ontbirds] OFO outing - Durham waterfront - October 16, 2016

2016-10-16 Thread geoff.carpentier
Well what a difference a day makes as yesterday's sunshine gave way to rain.
When we started it was pouring and we almost aborted but thank goodness we
didn’t for the rain stopped 15 minutes into our walk and didn’t resume until we
finished after lunch. Seven weather worthy OFOrs joined me along the
waterfront. We stopped at Corner Marsh in Ajax, Cranberry Marsh, Pringle Creek,
Lynde Creek and Thickson Point as we searched for lingering birds.

A total of 45 species birds made an appearance. Pipits, a Marsh Wren, a hybrid
Black-Mallard, some White-winged Scoters and a Semipalmated Plover at Ajax
brightened our day. The Brant remained elusive today. Two hardy (foolhardy?)
Monarchs cruised the shore southbound. Nonetheless the weather was kind and the
participants pleasant. What more can we ask? Thanks to all who attended.

[Ontbirds] TOC outing October 15, 2016 Durham Waterfront

2016-10-16 Thread geoff.carpentier
Well can the weather be too nice? Yup .. it was gorgeous, sunny and very warm
and that stalled almost all the bird movement along the lakeshore and add to
that both - Cranberry and Oshawa Second Marsh were drawn down so much that
almost no water at all exists now ... this made for a challenging day as 15
TOCers worked the Durham shore from Whitby to Oshawa. Stops at Cranberry Marsh,
Pringle Creek, Thickson Point and Oshawa Second Marsh eventually yielded 51
species of birds. The highlights included over 50 pipits, 9 Brant and 2
Black-bellied Plovers.

Thanks to all who attended and enjoyed the lovely weather with me!

[Ontbirds] OFO Trip to Amherst Island - 16th October 2016

2016-10-16 Thread Mark D. Read
Eight hardy souls braved the winds and continuous threat (and reality) of
rain today on Amherst Island and were rewarded with some good sightings of a
variety of birds, many of which were waterfowl. Highlights included 2 Black
Scoter and 8 White-winged Scoter, neither particularly common in this neck
of the woods. We also encountered a flock of about 1000 Greater Scaup (so
they have arrived), within in which were a few Lesser Scaup, Goldeneye,
Bufflehead and Redhead. All 3 regular mergansers were seen as were 2 Horned
Grebe. A single Bonaparte's Gull was the 'highlight' of gull scene and the
only shorebirds encountered were 6 Killdeer, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Dunlin
and a late Spotted Sandpiper. Also seen in the Owl Woods were 4 American
Woodcock. Passerines were hard to locate due to the high winds but included
Purple Finch, House Finch, Blue-headed Vireo and Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Till next year,

Mark.

Our only visitor brave enough to take on the weather forecast today was
Mark.

Weather:
There was a red sky this morning, which apparently caused the raptors to
'take warning,' as the old saying goes. When it wasn't raining, we counted
few raptors (and when it was raining, we didn't count at all). As the storm
system moved in, the wind shifted so that it had a westerly component. That
westerly component was maintained after the storm passed.

Raptor Observations:
We only documented 14 Sharpies, 42 distant Turkey Vultures, an American
Kestrel, and a Northern Harrier migrating today. A non-migratory Bald
Eagle, Merlin, Cooper's Hawk, and Osprey were also observed. The
approaching storm system seemed to deter movement, and after it passed
through only one Sharp-shinned Hawk was counted, which apparently really
wanted to get where to it was going.

Non-raptor Observations:
Over 2300 Red-winged Blackbirds and 270 Blue Jays flew over today, as did
several large groups of European Starlings. The sky was still swimming with
Tree Swallows making their gurgle-like vocalizations.

Predictions:
Tomorrow is predicted to be cloudy, with a chance of rain. Maybe the birds
that didn't fly today will fly overhead tomorrow. The southerly wind may
guide soaring birds north of the count site.

[Ontbirds] Big day for Greater White-fronted Geese in Essex County

2016-10-16 Thread Dave Martin
This morning while carrying out our daily migration watch from our deck
in Amherstburg we saw 140 Greater White-fronted Geese flying due south
at 7:45 a.m. They passed to the west of our place on a course that would
take them towards Lake Erie and perhaps over Holiday Beach. The birds
were in groups of 70, 40 and 30 but were within sight of each other so
were likely traveling together.

We decided to go to Hillman to try for the Hudsonian Godwit, Cattle
Egret and Fish Crow that were reported yesterday by various birders. At
11:05 a.m. we were at Hillman Marsh when a flock of 42 White-fronts came
in to land. At 12:40 p.m. Josh Vandermeulen reported 51 birds at Hillman
to Ontbirds and WEP [Windsor - Essex - Pelee Listserv] suggesting that
another smaller flock came in after the initial bunch.

On our way home to Amherstburg from Hillman and Pelee we stopped at Jack
Miner's at 3:29 p.m.and counted 21 White-fronts, not knowing that Jeremy
Hatt had found the same bunch and reported them to WEP at 12:47 p.m.

Meanwhile at 2:51 p.m., Donny Moore reported 25 birds at Harrow lagoons
to Ontbirds. This group flushed at 3:01 p.m. and headed out suggesting
that they were still in migration mode and not ready to settle down.

Total Greater White-fronted Geese in Essex this morning that have been
reported so far is 237 birds in at least 5 flocks at 4 locations.

It would be interesting to hear some speculation about the weather
conditions that might have caused this many Greater White-fronted Geese
to veer off track and end up in southwestern Ontario this morning.
Presumably there was an influx of additional birds in Michigan and other
states to the south and west.

[Ontbirds] 51 Greater White-fronted Geese, Hudsonian Godwit - Hillman Marsh shorebird cell

2016-10-16 Thread Josh Vandermeulen
There is a big flock of Greater White-fronted Geese at the shorebird cell at
Hillman Marsh - I have a minimum count of 51, and a mix of adults and
juveniles. The juvenile Hudsonian Godwit found by Jeremy Hatt, Marianne
Balkwill, Richard Carr and Rick Mayos is still here as well. No sign of the
Cattle Egret.

Hillman Marsh is on Mersea Rd 2 east of Leamington. The Shorebird cell is just
south of the main parking lot.

[Ontbirds] Laughing Gull, Franklin's Gull, Kittiwake etc. Rondeau Park

2016-10-16 Thread Blake A. Mann

More details on the Rondeau birds:

This morning there was an excellent movement of waterbirds along the east
side of Rondeau Park. Included was a large movement of Common Loons (over
200).

I arrived at Dog Beach just after 07:30 and caught sight of a juv
Black-legged Kittiwake heading south.

It was not seen again.

A while later after Steve Charbonneau and Keith Burk arrived, a second-cycle
Laughing Gull was seen heading south. It soon came back and we saw it about
3 more times. It briefly landed on the beach towards the visitor centre.
We did not find it again but could still be in the area.

Later in the morning, Steve came across a first-cycle Franklin's Gull at the
north end of the park off beach access 6 and 7. Several birders got on the
bird. Photos were taken in flight. It was hanging around for some time.

Over at Erieau, a male Eurasian Wigeon has been hanging out behind the fire
hall for a few days. There is a public viewing area behind the fire hall
with a nice deck to set up scopes. Scope is required as it is often
distant.
There is also a vegetation mat on the Bay seen from there which shorebirds
will congregate. Some Dunlin and a Lesser Yellowlegs were there today.
Also 20 Caspian Terns were resting on the mat.

Dog Beach is near the south end of Lakeshore Road in Rondeau Provincial
Park. The park is to the right of the end of C-K Rd. 15 (Kent Bridge Road).

The Fire Hall at Erieau is on the north side of the main road in the village
along the one-way section of road heading west. Erieau is at the end of C-K
Rd. 12 SW of Blenheim.

There is currently an alternate plumage pacific Loon swimming amongst a couple

lot.
