[Ontbirds] Holiday Beach CBC provisional results

2016-12-28 Thread Jeremy Hatt
Hi everyone,

The Holiday Beach CBC took place yesterday, which includes Holiday Beach
Conservation Area, Big Creek, the lower Detroit River north to LaSalle, Boblo
Island, and surrounding areas. 33 participants (32 in the field and 1 feeder
watcher) volunteered for the Count, tallying 72 species and 14,081 individual
birds. 4 other species were reported for Count Week.

Skies were cloudy and the temperature was just above 0 degrees for the day w/
west winds making things quite cold when exposed. Very little snow was left
after the mild temperatures and rain of Dec. 26th and small sections of marsh
had open water. High numbers of dabbling ducks were found on these open waters,
including a total of 2,184 Mallards. When Lake Erie and parts of the river are
frozen, waterfowl get concentrated at the Detroit River mouth in Amherstburg
but due to the lake and virtually all of the river being open, lower numbers of
diving ducks were found on the count.

A few highlights from this year's count included:

Snow Goose - 8 (colour morphs unknown) flying over Holiday Beach CA and 5 (2
white, 3 blue) in a flooded field west of Big Creek.

Ross's Goose - 1 in a flooded field west of Big Creek

Black-crowned Night-Heron - 1 at Holiday Beach CA

30 Bald Eagles on the shoreline ice off of Holiday Beach was a good count.

Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 adult west of Holiday Beach CA

Count week species included Wild Turkey, Merlin, Cedar Waxwing, and Fox Sparrow.

Canvasback numbers were low again this year; likely due to the lower Detroit
River being so open. The lower Detroit River is an Important Bird Area and
Canvasback is one of the trigger species for the IBA. Thousands of Canvasbacks
have been seen flying along the river in recent days but only 80 were found on
the Count.

Many thanks to all the Area Leaders and volunteers for their hard work and for
a fun roundup afterwards. A species thanks to Betty Learmouth for her many
years coordinating the Holiday Beach CBC. 2015 was her last year as coordinator
but she continues to volunteer on the Count.

[Ontbirds]High Park - significant warbler, migrant concentration

2007-10-04 Thread Jeremy Hatt
This morning (October 3) between 9:00am and 1:00pm, I experienced a fallout
of migrants at High Park with large numbers of many species in the vicinity
of Colborne Lodge on the main road at the south entrance. Since I was
restricted to one small area, there are no doubt significant numbers of
birds in the park today. I am providing rough estimates of the number of
birds counted.

High counts:

Yellow-rumped Warbler - 75+ I estimate that there are probably hundreds
within the park

Nashville Warbler - 40+
Blackpoll Warbler - 30+
Tennessee Warbler - 15+ (a few were singing)
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 30+
White-breasted Nuthatch - 15+
Black-capped Chickadee - very abundant
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 8
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 5
American Robin - very abundant

Other notables:

Common Goldeneye - one flyby (early)
Brown Creeper - 4
Swainson's Thrush - 2
Gray Catbird - 1
Blue-headed Vireo - 1
American Redstart - 2
Black-throated Green Warbler - 4
Orange-crowned Warbler - 2
Scarlet Tanager - 3
White-throated Sparrow - a fair number
Purple Finch - 2 (male and female)
American Goldfinch - only 1

Also a good day for woodpeckers:

Downy Woodpecker - 35+ (2 landed on me while I was birding)
Hairy Woodpecker - 2
Northern Flicker - 15+
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 7 (mostly juveniles)

High Park is located at the west end of Toronto near Keele and Bloor. The
main entrance is on the south side of Bloor, or you can access the park via
the Queensway on its south end at Queensway and Colborne.

[Ontbirds]Mockingbird High Park (and other migrants)

2007-10-07 Thread Jeremy Hatt

At noon on Sunday, October 7, I had a Northern Mockingbird at the south end of
High Park, Toronto. The bird was about 50 meters west of Colborne Lodge drive,
directly across from Grenadier Pond. It was perched on the hydro lines.

In addition, it was another excellent day of birding at High Park with large
numbers of migrants, no doubt due to the weather conditions holding them in the
park.

Warblers:

Yellow-rumped Warbler - I counted over 250 just at the south end of the park
Orange-crowned Warbler - 2
Northern Parula - 2
Chestnut-sided Warbler - 1 first fall female
Magnolia Warbler - 1
Black-throated Blue Warbler - 3 (2 females, 1 male)
Black-throated Green Warbler - 1
Blackpoll Warbler - 5
Northern Waterthrush - 2

I also counted over 20 White-breasted Nuthatches (outnumbered Red-breasted), 3
Brown Creepers, had both Kinglet species, 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, 1
Black-billed Cuckoo, both White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows, and decent
numbers of migrating Grackles, Red-winged Blackbirds, Robins, and Starlings. At
Grenadier pond, I had 2 Pied-billed Grebes, 8 Northern Shoveler, and 1
Peregrine Falcon. Also, there were 8 Red-breasted Mergansers flying overhead.

In total I had 43 species in the span of 3.5 hours (10:00am - 1:30pm).

High Park is located at the west end of Toronto near Keele and Bloor. The main
entrance is on the south side of Bloor, or you can access the park via the
Queensway on its south end at Queensway and Colborne Drive. If you're getting
there by transit, get off the Bloor subway line at High Park station and cross
the street.

Hi Birders,

One of the OFO members requested a detailed direction to=20
where we found four Snowy Owls on Sunday.
It gave us the impulse to go out and check the spots.
We were fifty percent successful Today.
We found the two juveniles, but no sight of the adults Today.
One was found on Side Road 25 between 2nd and 3rd Lines.
(I have a picture of it on my web site.)
The other was found on 5th Line off of Side Road 25.
Good luck,

[Ontbirds] Ross's Goose (2) - Onion Fields North of Point Pelee

2012-03-10 Thread Jeremy Hatt
This afternoon at 1:30pm, Sarah Rupert and I found 2 Ross's Geese in the Onion
Fields near Point Pelee National Park at the intersection of Road 19 and
Concession D.

The 2 birds were in a large puddle northeast of the intersection amongst a
flock of Ring-billed Gulls. We were eventually joined by Kory and Sarah Renaud
and had great looks.

To get to Road 19 and Concession D, follow signs to Point Pelee National Park
from Leamington. From Pelee Drive going south, turn left on Concession D and
drive all the way to the end of the road until you hit Road 19.

Tonight at 8:30 at St. Clair National Wildlife Area, a White-faced Ibis flew
close by the viewing tower and continued flying northwest until it was out of
sight.

Least and American Bitterns as well as one Sora were heard calling at dusk.

The bird was found by myself and additional observers included Andrew Keaveney,
Mark Field, and Frank and Rob Pinilla.

Directions: from the 401 take exit 63. Proceed northeast on County Rd 2
(Queen's Line) then left on Merlin Rd. At the end of Merlin, turn right on
County Rd 36, then the next left on Jacob Rd, followed by another immediate
left onto Grande River Line. Take the next right at Town Line Rd. Finally, take
a left onto Balmoral Line and an immediate right into the Wildlife Area.

[Ontbirds] White-winged Dove - Rondeau

2013-01-29 Thread Jeremy Hatt
The White-winged Dove was found around 11am this morning at the Rondeau Visitor
Centre eating seed under the feeders. It is now perched not far from the fence
surrounding this area.

As per previous directions, take the 401 exit 101 and follow Kent Bridge Rd 15
all the way to where you will see signs for the park gates. You can ask for
directions to the Visitor Centre at the park office where you pay to get in.

[Ontbirds] Snowy Egret - Tilbury Sewage Lagoons

2013-09-02 Thread Jeremy Hatt
This evening, Kory Renaud and I located the Snowy Egret at the Tilbury Sewage
Lagoons posted earlier on eBird (much thanks to the original poster). It was in
the main northeast pond on a newly constructed berm w/ a group of Great Egrets.
At about 7pm it flew off to the northwest w/ the rest of the egrets to roost
somewhere nearby. It may well return to the lagoons tomorrow morning.

Best,

[Ontbirds] Eurasian Collared-Dove --Leamington

2015-03-15 Thread Jeremy Hatt
I just received a call from Dan Loncke who, with his wife Mary, saw a Eurasian
Collared-Dove at Gore Hill Public School on Seacliff Drive, east of Leamington.

He saw a pair of doves on the wires and confirmed at least one as Eurasian
Collared but they flew soon after and he could only relocate one bird. The
probability is high that the second bird was also a collared-dove. These
individuals have been in the same vicinity since August of 2014.

[Ontbirds] Probable Western Kingbird - Kennedy Woods, Kingsville

I just briefly had a probable Western Kingbird at Kennedy Woods in Kingsville.
I have a few digiscoped photos but lost it and am currently trying to relocate.
Just getting the word out.

It was along the tree line behind the small woodlot of Kennedy Woods. Kennedy
Woods is on Road 3 West; north of Kingsville and just east of Jack Miner Bird
Sanctuary. Walk thru the trail of Kennedy Woods until you come out into a wide
open meadow and the tree line where it was feeding is on the west side of the
meadow.

[Ontbirds] Holiday Beach CBC provisional results

2018-01-02 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
Hi everyone,

The Holiday Beach CBC took place on Saturday, December 30th. The count includes
Holiday Beach Conservation Area, Big Creek, the lower Detroit River north to
LaSalle (Lower Detroit IBA), Boblo Island, and surrounding areas. 30
participants (29 in the field and 1 feeder watcher) volunteered for the Count,
tallying 77 species and 14,829 individual birds. 4 additional species were
reported during Count Week.

Skies were partly cloudy in the morning turning to cloudy in the mid-afternoon.
The temperature was around -9C degrees for the day w/ west winds making things
quite cold when exposed. All ground was snow-covered this year and there was a
lot of ice cover on the Detroit River and Lake Erie. Big Creek and the Holiday
Beach marsh were frozen over. High numbers of Mallards were found in corn
fields east of Amherstburg including a total of 3,499 Mallards. Gull numbers
were down significantly from the 2016 count, which was fairly mild with lots of
open water on the river and Lake Erie.

A few highlights from this year's count included:

Double-crested Cormorant - 1 flying high over Boblo Island.

Red-shouldered Hawk – 1 in the vicinity of Holiday Beach

American Coot – 1 in an open area of water next to Boblo Island on the Detroit
River.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker – 1 at Holiday Beach.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet – 4 in various woodlots in the count circle.

Northern Mockingbird – 1 long-staying bird in Amherstburg.

Chipping Sparrow – 1 in the Big Creek area.

Count week species included Snowy Owl, Merlin, Gray Catbird, and Rusty
Blackbird.

Many thanks to all the Area Leaders and volunteers for braving the cold and for
a great roundup afterwards.

[Ontbirds] Purple Gallinule John R Park Honestead

2018-08-18 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
The Purple Gallinule just made another brief appearance in the same location at
7:40pm as described on Ontbirds by Jeremy Bensette. See directions below.

Location: John R Park Homestead can be found by searching Google Maps, and is
on County Rd 50 between Kingsville and Harrow in Essex County. If you park in
the gravel parking lot up against a flower garden, walk to County Rd 50 and
turn right. There is a bridge over the road, and the bird is less than 100m
south of Rd 50 (toward the lake). Viewing is
difficult and will require patience. The bird was resting for a while out of
sight, then came back into view and foraged before flying across the creek,
where it was still viewable but tricky. Hopefully that makes enough sense! The
approximate GPS coordinate of the bird is (41.9966, -82.8485), which is in the
middle of a small marsh. Do not plan to walk to this exact coordinate - it is
where the bird last was and a good direction to look from the road.

[Ontbirds] OFO Hike Sept. 16 - Point Pelee, onion fields, Wheatley Harbour

2018-09-17 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
20 participants braved mid-July temperatures on Sunday, Sept. 16th for the OFO
hike at Point Pelee National Park, the onion fields, and Wheatley Harbour. It
was a hot day w/ light east winds and clear skies, which made finding birds a
challenge. We ended the day w/ 52 species.

Highlights from the morning at Point Pelee included 4 Sanderlings at the Tip
area, a good Sharp-shinned Hawk flight w/ the odd Merlin, American Kestrel, and
Broad-winged Hawk mixed in, and a couple pockets of migrants at the Tip and on
Red Bud Trail including Red-breasted Nuthatch, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Red-eyed
Vireo, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and Purple Finch. We only ended up w/ 6 species of
warbler: Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Magnolia Warbler, Bay-breasted
Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, and Black-throated Green Warbler. We only saw a
few Monarchs at the Tip.

The Onion Fields north of Point Pelee unfortunately didn't have many shorebirds
and the heat haze made for difficult viewing but 3 Wilson's Snipe within the
Pelee marsh at the east end of Mersea Rd E was a highlight.

We finished the afternoon at Wheatley Harbour. There we had our best bird of
the day, a very early female Long-tailed Duck in the inner harbour. The harbour
also provided a good chance for close study of terns and gulls.

A big thank you to Deb and the Friends of Point Pelee for providing
refreshments in the morning and to Ellen Smout for helping w/ the group
throughout the morning.

[Ontbirds] Holiday Beach CBC provisional results

2018-12-30 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
The Holiday Beach CBC took place on Saturday, December 29th. The count includes
Holiday Beach Conservation Area, Big Creek, the lower Detroit River north to
LaSalle (Lower Detroit IBA), Boblo Island, and surrounding areas. 35
participants (34 in the field and 1 feeder watcher) volunteered for the Count,
tallying 71 species and 18,585 individual birds. 2 additional species have also
been reported for Count Week so far.

Skies were mostly cloudy all day with a little bit of sun in the early
afternoon. Light flurries in the morning stopped around 8am. The temperature
ranged from a low of -2C to 0C w/ light northwest winds making for comfortable
birding throughout the day. There was no snow cover and no ice cover on Lake
Erie or the Detroit River. In colder years with lots of ice cover, waterfowl
get concentrated around the mouth of the Detroit River and areas along the
lower Detroit River, which stay open year-round. This year, large rafts of
diving ducks were present on the open waters of Lake Erie and many dabbling
ducks within Big Creek.

A few highlights from this year's count included:

Mute Swan - 620 birds counted (not a positive highlight but a high count
nonetheless)

Tundra Swan - good count for the circle of 1,438

Canvasback - 6,898 (The Lower Detroit River IBA is an important staging area
for wintering Canvasback)

Redhead - 701 (mostly on the Detroit River)

Common Loon - 2 off of Holiday Beach

Golden Eagle - 1 adult

Red-shouldered Hawk - 2

Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 at Holiday Beach

Northern Saw-Whet Owl - one found freshly dead at the side of the road

Eastern Phoebe - 2 on Boblo Island

Count week birds so far include Belted Kingfisher and Merlin.

Many thanks to all the Area Leaders and volunteers for their efforts and to
Kory and Sarah Renaud for hosting a great roundup!

[Ontbirds] Slaty-backed Gull continuing at Essex Landfill

2019-01-16 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
Hi everyone,

The Slaty-backed Gull found yesterday continues at the Windsor-Essex Solid
Waste Authority Landfill as of today at 1:45pm. It is in the same location on
the south side of County Rd 18 w/ a large group of gulls.

Directions below by Dave Martin (thanks again for posting on my behalf
yesterday).

Jeremy Hatt

Cty rd 18 is a major east-west county road in Essex
County running from Amherstburg in the west to
Kingsville in the east. You can get to it from Arner Line to the east or from
Walker Road to the west. Walker Road is connected to Hwy 401. Arner Line
connects the town of Essex to the Lake Erie shoreline. If coming from the
Leamington area take Hwy 3 to Windsor and exit on Cty Rd 18 south of the Town
of Essex.

You will see the landfill long before you arrive. The gulls loaf in the
ploughed field to the south of the Landfill. The only parking is a narrow
shoulder on both sides of Rd 18. Traffic is fast along here so be careful
parking and getting out of your vehicle.

[Ontbirds] Mew Gull - Essex-Windsor Regional Landfill

2019-03-14 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
There is currently a Mew Gull at the Essex-Windsor Regional Landfill.

It is in the fields south of the landfill and easiest seen from McCormick side
road about 200m south of County rd 18.

The Essex Landfill is south of the town of Essex on County Road 18 between
McCormick Road and Coulter Side Road. This is west of Arner Townline. The
landfill is on the north side of the road but gulls loaf in the fields on the
south side. If you search Essex Regional Landfill in Google Maps it does come
up.

[Ontbirds] Eurasian Collared-Dove Albuna Townline and Mersea Rd 5 (northwest of Leamington)

2019-04-21 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
I currently have a Eurasian Collared-Dove at the intersection of Albuna
Townline and Mersea Road 5. This is northwest of the town of Leamington.

From Leamington, take Highway 3 until you get to Albuna Townline and turn north
on Albuna until you get to Mersea Rd 5. It’s singing and is currently on the
hydro wires right at this intersection.

This is right across from the Leisure Lake and Cottage Resort.

[Ontbirds] Neotropic Cormorant - Hillman Marsh southeast beach

2019-09-13 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
A Neotropic Cormorant was posted to eBird this afternoon and later refound by
Jeremy Bensette. It was perched on a driftwood branch at southeast Hillman
Marsh beach (dead end accessed by Mersea Rd B and East Beach Road).

The bird flew at 5:30pm but will hopefully stay in the area. It is an adult
still in breeding plumage.

[Ontbirds] OFO Outing - Point Pelee and surrounding area

2019-09-15 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
10 participants joined the OFO hike at Point Pelee National Park and
surrounding area today. We finished w/ a total of 48 species but most of our
time was spent searching for shorebirds and waterbirds so we ended w/ low
numbers of passerines.

The temperature was warm throughout the day and mostly cloudy w/ light south
winds and a few light rain showers in the late morning and early afternoon.

At the Tip, highlights included a hybrid Great Black-backed x Herring Gull, a
few Merlins giving close looks including one harassing a Sharp-shinned Hawk,
and a couple of somewhat late Eastern Kingbirds flying south off the Tip.

In the late morning, Paul Gosselin reported that the Black-bellied
Whistling-Duck had returned to Sturgeon Creek Marina so we carpooled to see
this rarity that has been lingering in the area for quite some time. Everyone
enjoyed incredible looks at the duck, which was a lifer or new Ontario bird for
most of the group. Thanks to Paul Gosselin for the report.

Our next stop was at southeast Hillman Marsh (East Beach road access) to try
for the Neotropic Cormorant found Friday. We didn't find the cormorant but we
did see an assortment of shorebirds including Semipalmated Plover, Ruddy
Turnstone, Sanderling, Semipalmated Sandpiper, and Spotted Sandpiper.
Surprisingly there were no shorebirds at the Mersea 21 flooded field north of
Hillman Marsh.

Our final stop was Wheatley Harbour where the highlight was an adult Lesser
Black-backed Gull on the break wall.

Many thanks to all the participants who attended and special thanks to Sarah
Rupert for her early morning help prior to the outing.

[Ontbirds] Black-bellied Whistling-Duck - Kingsville Marina

2019-09-22 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
Hi everyone,

An update on the long-staying Black-bellied Whistling-Duck in Essex County.
Earlier today, Michael Hudak refound the duck at Kingsville Marina on Loop Lane
(the first street on your right as you drive down the hill into the marina. It
was feeding in the grass on the south side of Loop Lane at the second pier.

Kingsville Marina is south of Kingsville on Lakeview Avenue. From downtown
Kingsville, take Division Street south until Park Lane and turn left. Continue
on Park Lane until you reach Lakeview Avenue and make a right turn into the
marina. Kingsville is the first major town west of Leamington.

[Ontbirds] Brant north of Harrow, Essex County

2019-11-10 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS

There is currently a single Brant (very rare for Essex County) on the north
side of 6th Concession Road just west of Marsh Road. It is in a field w/ 120
Tundra Swans.

This area is north of Harrow (west of Leamington/Kingsville). Easiest way to
get here is to take County Road 18 and turn south on Marsh Road. 6th Concession
is the first road south of 18 and you take a right. From Harrow, take Walker
Road north from town and turn right on Marsh Road. 6th Concession will be your
first left turn off of Marsh. There is enough room to easily pull off the side
of the road here.

[Ontbirds] Holiday Beach CBC - December 28, 2019

2019-12-28 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
The Holiday Beach CBC took place today, Saturday, December 28th. The count
includes Holiday Beach Conservation Area, Big Creek, the lower Detroit River
north to LaSalle (Lower Detroit IBA), Boblo Island, and surrounding areas. 37
participants (36 in the field and 1 feeder watcher) volunteered for the Count,
tallying 76 species and 15,624 individual birds. This is on par w/ the number
of species and individuals seen for the last few years of the count. No
additional species have yet been reported for Count Week.

Skies were cloudy in the morning turning to partly sunny in the afternoon. The
temperature was around 1C in the morning warming to about 5C in the afternoon.
Winds were fairly low out of the east but felt a bit more brisk along the Lake
Erie shoreline. Following several mild days in the area, there was virtually no
snow cover on the ground and no ice cover on Lake Erie, along the Detroit
River, or in any marsh areas.

Similar to previous years, the most abundant bird of the count was Canvasback
w/ 2,326 birds tallied; lower than the previous year's count of 6,000+ (the
Lower Detroit River is an Important Bird Area for this species w/ greater than
1% of the global population overwintering on the river). Other diving ducks
were fairly scarce and gull numbers were also down; typical of mild periods
when they aren't concentrated along the river. Similar to other counts in Essex
County this year, quite a few passerine species were notably low in number or
absent.

A few highlights from this year's count include:

Snow Goose - 4 birds from two separate areas

Trumpeter Swan - 1 individual

American Wigeon - a good count of 27 birds within the Holiday Beach marsh

American Black Duck - a good count of 268 birds mostly in the Holiday Beach
marsh

Redhead - a good count of 1,167 birds on Lake Erie and along the Detroit River

Double-crested Cormorant - 3 separate birds along the Detroit River

Great Egret - 1 late bird in the Holiday Beach marsh

Turkey Vulture - 1 late bird

Red-shouldered Hawk - 2 birds seen at Holiday Beach

American Coot - 2 birds in the Holiday Beach marsh

Eastern Phoebe - 1 bird on Boblo Island and 2 at Holiday Beach

Northern Shrike - 1 bird west of Holiday Beach

Carolina Wren - a good count of 37 birds across the count area

Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1 bird on Boblo Island

Many thanks to our dedicated Area Leaders, Bob Hall-Brooks, Paul Pratt, Paul
Desjardins, Linda Wladarski, and Dave Martin, for helping coordinate another
successful CBC and thank you to all the volunteers for helping count. Also a
big thank you to Sarah and Kory Renaud for hosting another excellent roundup w/
lots of great food.

[Ontbirds] January 12 OFO Outing - Detroit River and Ojibway Park

2020-01-12 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
Today, Kory Renaud and I led the Detroit River OFO Outing, which started at
Lakeview Park Marina in east Windsor and continued w/ Little River Corridor
Park, the Ambassador Bridge, and ended at Ojibway Park. 19 participants joined
us for the first part of the outing and 13-14 continued on for the rest of the
day. The day started off cold and cloudy but by late morning and into the
afternoon, there were periods of sun making birding quite comfortable.
Temperatures ranged from -4C in the morning to -1C in the afternoon. We tallied
43 species for the day.

Lakeview Park Marina: w/ such mild temperatures so far this winter in the area,
the waters of Lake St. Clair remain open so birds were not as concentrated at
the Detroit River mouth as they sometimes are (the Detroit River mouth stays
open year-round). We still managed to find some highlights, however, including
a continuing male Wood Duck at Lakeview Park Marina, large rafts of Common
Mergansers and Canvasbacks, an adult "Kumlien's" Iceland Gull, and a handful of
Bald Eagles on Peche Island.

Little River Corridor (south of Lakeview Park Marina): during colder
temperatures and lake freeze, Little River stays open due to the neighbouring
pollution control plant letting out warm water. Since there is currently no
lake freeze, waterfowl were in short supply along the river but other
highlights here included a Belted Kingfisher and American Robin.

Ambassador Bridge: perhaps the best experience of the outing was seeing the
resident Peregrine Falcons in action at the Ambassador Bridge. One bird caught
a Rock Pigeon and perched on the bridge where we had excellent looks at it
feeding on its prey. Thanks to Jeremy Bensette for getting it in his scope so
everyone could really enjoy the view including a few curious members of the
public.

Sprucewood Avenue west of Ojibway Parkway: this area of industry along the
Detroit River can be quite birdy and highlights today included a flock of 8
White-crowned Sparrows and another hunting Peregrine Falcon.

Ojibway Park: a favourite winter location for many local birders, we finished
at Ojibway Park where we enjoyed plenty of White-breasted Nuthatches, Tufted
Titmice, Black-capped Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and others at the park's
feeders.

Thanks to everyone who attended the outing,
Jeremy Hatt & Kory Renaud

[Ontbirds] Probable Gyrfalcon - Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary, Essex County

2020-02-02 Thread Jeremy Hatt via ONTBIRDS
Getting the word out that I had a probable Gyrfalcon at Jack Miner Bird
Sanctuary north of Kingsville.

It has made two passes hunting the waterfowl here but I haven’t seen it again
since. Hoping it makes another pass. I got video w/ my phone and I’ve sent
screenshots around for comment and the consensus so far is that it looks good
for Gyr. Thanks to those that have commented.

Directions: from Division Street North (a few roads north of Kingsville), turn
west on Road 3. After a short while you will reach Jack Miner’s. The falcon was
hunting waterfowl on the south side in the main field. Kingsville is west of
Leamington/Point Pelee.

The bird has been near the baseball diamond and on the telephone wires
along Seacliff Drive.

Good luck!
