Yes; and IIRC UNIX (ie all upper-case) is still a trademark of
 ATT/Bell Labs, no?

no, it belongs to The Open Group (http://www.opengroup.org/)

In this page: http://blackboxwm.sourceforge.net/ you write:
 M$ Windows (all varieties)
I do not know the problem you might have with Microsoft sir, but this is
down right unprofessional and filthy to reffer to Microsoft as M$,
ESPECIALLY when the project you are developing is actually running on
 that platform.

While I can see their point, they strike me as a bith of a zealot with the
request. Anyway, doesn't Blackbox require Cygwin in order to operate on
MS OSes? If so, why not just change the reference to Cygwin?

I'll stop being a linux zealot, just as soon as _M$_ stops it's antitrust
practices. Sure, I'm stooping to their level, maybe, but alas, zealotry
isn't breaking the law (and getting away with it)!!!

I love it when people are contradictory... this chick comes across as a
zealot more than using an altered abreviation does.

I don't know what the big deal is. I'd just leave it, who cares, not worth the
time/thought/effort. If people are going to get all freaked out over something like
this, let 'em.

That first reply was supposed to be sent back to [EMAIL PROTECTED], but I forgot to
change the To:, :/, then I wrote back to Jan to apologize. :P

Figured I better not Cc everyone on the blackbox list for my whole day's
correspondence. ;)

true, I should just say Cygwin.

I always thought referring to the company as M$ was like referring to Un*x, it
just avoided the explicit name and the need to pay someone (-:

Cygwin is a more accurate depiction anyway so that is what the webpage now says.

The difference is that M$ contains a judgement. Un*x or it's
variants are neutral. It's intended to summarize the various flavors of
UNIX-like operating systems with one word.

I agree that M$, Micro$loth and all the other variations are not
suitable for a projects website.

how is it you received this? You happen to be the first address on
the screen shots page so if she chose that link that shows a certain
 lack of understanding.

*shrug* Maybe I was the first for who she could find an email address.

You might want to add a short mailto-link at the bottom of the

I've started using Nix because it seems more inclusive. Originally I
understood the use of Un*x was to protect against lawsuits from ATT
during the great BSD Freedom wars. After we won, it became an inclusive
use which lead me to my first sentence.

2002-07-22 Thread astralflight6

In mho..

People are simply way too sensitive. I like to think of the internet as the Wild West
in a way. People say whatever they want, and it's up to us to realize that we have
every right to disagree, but *no* right to censor the views of others.

In fact, I actually enjoy this freewheeling kind of environment. There's bravado,
arrogance, and insensitivity. But if you dig deep there's also a lot of intelligence.
Take my own experiences for example: I've learned more from this website about BB
and related software because of the matter-of-fact, direct and unadulterated
information available. Not because it caters to the whims or feelings of any
particular individual.

Besides, every KNOWS that many people just think Microsoft technology sucks. Gates'
is a genius as a businessman. But not as an OS developer.

Since this isn't a list for philosophical argument, I'll leave it at that. And thanks
again for making the window manager learning process a valuable and interesting one.

This has nothing to do with censorship, but with how you would like to
portray yourself or your project. If you want to be taken seriously and
do not want to look childish or foolish, don't do childish or foolish
things, that's all.

And that was my last post on this topic.
