You've got some good ideas here. The reason for the flat side of the dowel is to allow a nut to fit between the dowel and the pvc. The small bolt I use for a set screw goes through a hold in the pvc, and threads into the nut. When I keep tightening the bolt, it threads through the nut and clamps
