Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] 2 Questions from new Boom owner re wifi connect failure and community firmware

2022-03-03 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Is this true? Upgrading the Logitech Boom (not the Radio) to the
latest firmware makes it incompatible with LMS?

I know about the radio problem, I left my Radio the way it was.

I wish Logitech would bring back the Radio (original type) and the
other units, they were so far ahead of the competition that they're
still excellent.

Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] What to do with a Boom with sticky front panel?

2022-02-13 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
The English instructions mention:

Processing instructions:
First simply remove the old button. Then remove as much dirt as possible
with packet adhesive.
See picture 4. With Tesa it is also very easy to see where dust or dirt is
still sitting.
If everything is clean, start with the big sticker. It is best to put it on
the table and then remove the back.

I'm guessing "Tesa" is the sticker material.

What operating system are you using?

Send a PM to mherger on this forum with the details - in particular the
MAC address.
I expect he can see the IP address that you are posting to this forum
from ... and then check to see if the player with that MAC address is at
the same IP address and can then break the link to the original user.

You might have to post another message on the forum to gain the ability
to send a PM.

The problem is likely permissions - read that big thread on Mac Installations.

There are a bunch of permissions that have to be changed by the user

Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] Resetting my problem. LMS won't install

2020-07-25 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Allen,

Search for LMS will not start, MAC. Your LMS is installing but it's
file permissions (I believe) that prevent it from starting.

Also it may be "ownership" of the files and if your username has
authority in that group where the executable of the LMS server
belongs to.

Linux which I'm running is very similar, be sure also to be using the
latest LMS for your particular operating system.

Can you see logitech media server from the web page:

Where 192.168.1.3 is the IP address of the computer with the LMS on it.

Instructions for finding IP address of your Windows computer:
https://www.groovypost.com/howto/find-windows-10-device-ip-address/

In Linux you use.
ifconfig from the computer with LMS on it.

Substitute the address it gives you for the above then add colon 9000/

Open in web browser you should see LMS.

It was a product slightly ahead of its time with bi-amp audio, low
distortion, streaming, add on apps.

I personally think it's a product for right now.

AM broadcasts are more difficult to receive because of compact fluorescent
lighting and some LED lighting and switching power supplies.

FM is still good, but many have extra streams which my FM radio won't
receive. But I can get them with my Boom.

Shortwave is mostly gone, but I can still listen to BBC, Swiss
International and others. Radio Havana Cuba is still on Shortwave but
something is always going wrong with RHC transmissions like low and
distorted audio.

Phileas asked this question "I’m currently wondering about other options
for a bedside radio with good sound quality but more functionality" and I'd
like to know too.

Put a battery, cellphone connectivity, and a handle of your Boom and you'd
have a boom box that would be amazing!

David

Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] Can my Boom be saved?

2019-11-23 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
I searched the forums for you, try this.

HARD RESET:
Unplug power, press and hold down the add (+) button on the remote, plug
power back in (whilst continuing to hold down add button)

If that doesn't work, hold down the power button for 15 seconds.

podcasts.

Get the podcasts, or get an east coast station like WGBH

I sent you a Private Message through the forum asking if you wanted to sell
your troubled Boom.

I control my Boom with an Android tablet and Orange Squeeze app. It can
display as one line or as pictures, I use the one line display, it's
faster. Pictures display if provided when albums or songs play. I tried a
program to retrieve pictures from the Internet and delete duplicates from
my library and ended up losing many songs because I had ripped them myself
and the data didn't match the Internet's names exactly. I had given away
the CDs too!

I have one Boom that has a loose D.C. connector socket. Is this common?
If I wiggle the connector a bit, and don't disturb it, it continues to
connect. Annoying because if I move the Boom on my night table, I have to
fuss with it.

Is there an easy non surgical solution?

My experience is 40 years ago, but it was that foam was able to give better
high frequency response but that it deteriorated rather quickly and
loudspeakers needed to be re-coned more quickly.

So does rubber or foam deteriorate quicker today? I don't know.

Search for what you want long life span or better sound with your favorite
search engine.

Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] Boom language changed?

2018-06-12 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
install Logitech Media Server and you will be able to change the language
and display brightness settings as well as other settings and features not
available with just the Boom running alone.

Even if you don't have a music library, LMS adds many features not
available without it like transcoding which allows you to play streams not
supported by your Boom.

Also there are radio stations I want to listen to which aren't in the stand
alone Boom.

With LMS running, I can put them in a separate My Favorites which is
associated with my LMS. Without LMS, several of these streams wouldn't
work.

It's FREE, you know.

If your worried about the costs of running your computer, go buy a micro
PC. Mine is made by CompuLab and draws 7 watts maximum and has a 1TB hard
drive (only get the 5000 rpm type or SSD because of power consumption
limits.)

Here's the download: http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.9

The button for SETTINGS is on the lower bottom right. It has multiple
pages and there are drop down menus for sub menus.

Get it installed and fix your problem!

Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] Is Boom speaker deterioration inevitable ?

I don't think it's deteriorating glue that attaches the speakers but
rather deterioration of the speaker surrounds themselves - the material
that supports the cones themselves.

Joe does this work and he has low frequency files to test your speakers on

BPA,

I have never seen anyone answer a technical question with such lack of
technical understanding.

You cannot do what you wrote. The Boom PSU is 12 VDC, it will not put out
18 VDC ever.

Plugging in the Radio PSU which is 50% higher voltage the Boom requires
will likely destroy the Boom.

If the original poster did what you suggested, he would likely destroy his
Boom and you would be responsible.

Please do not answer technical questions when you don't even understand
fundamental DC voltage laws.

Go take a electronics course please.

Thank you,

Yes, you're right but what gets me is that you picked the better one.

How I wish that would happen to us all.

Maybe someone someday will buy the rights and responsibilities of Logitech
Boom - it was an awesome line, especially the Boom with it's bi-amplified
speaker system and robust sound.

I knew the "end was neigh" when the Boom Radio came out with new firmware.
I knew that was the wrong direction to go in.

And predictably, now it is also history.

I have one - with the battery pack - so I can go up to the attic and clean
house with nice sounds!

Life is good with LMS - all my old records are digitized now. I can play
thousands of songs!

Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] What happened to KCLU in Thousand Oaks?

2017-10-25 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
KCLU is https://kclustream.callutheran.edu:8090/kclump3

Go to http://mysqueezebox.com/settings/favorites and enter it there.

I have many stations in my favorites which aren't listed.

The best tool to use to find hidden music links is vlc.

https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

Under "stream" once the stream is playing, you will find the real location
of the stream.

Sometimes it takes an hour or two to find a non flash stream but the time
spent is well worth it.

One Classical station on Cape Cod refuses to use non flash streams but I
finally found one. That one took several months to get.

But it's on My Favorites @ mysqueezebox.com.

Note: Adding Favorites to the LMS is a good idea but make sure you add it
to your mysqueezebox.com favorites as well.

If you can play the stream it is easy to save but unlisted streams have to
be entered with a web browser either on the LMS server's IP Address for LMS
favorites or at mysqueezebox.com for non LMS favorites.

Best wishes

Joe,

You have done a fabulous job. I thought you were a professional, you say
you're a "hobbyist" but your work is truly professional.

Do you know of anyone who repairs LOGITECH BOOM Speakers? I don't listen
loudly only at a quiet level but I am starting to hear distortion at 500 Hz
and lower.

For the help of others, if you know anyone who repairs these in Europe, say
who does this, and for those of us on the other side of the salt water pond
that is West of Europe and North of South America, tell us who does this.
(Atlantic Ocean!)

Thanks,

Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] LMS Compatibility Other Radios?

2017-05-21 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
What I found interesting is that a few people said that this unit sounds
better than Logitech Boom.

Maybe someone will come out with a 100% comparable radio but with updated
features so we could replace the unrepairable Boom which suffers from
speaker and display failures.

I don't have one of the Grace units. I just saw that a few said it sounded
even better than Logitech Boom which is great prIs praise.

[SlimDevices: Boom] USA SBB Display, Power Supply & Speaker Repairs?

2017-05-15 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Is there any person in United States of America that specializes in
refurbishing Squeezebox Booms?

Eventually the display dims, the speakers start distorting at low
frequencies (even without boosting the bass frequencies.)

What's a fellow to do?

Suggestions?

Maybe we have enough people here to special order the displays.

Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] Boom suddenly died

2017-02-03 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Joe,

Short of providing a schematic with your voltage measurements on them, you
did an excellent job of documenting your Book's failure.

I started to read into your story, pieces of my own story, that e is an
obviously skilled person but us his vision still up to the surface mount
parts? Your story kept going and showed me that wasn't the problem, but
had it been, I can tell you how difficult to admit I could no longer see
well enough to do circuit board work because of retinal detachment suffered
because of weakness of my eyes because of retinopathy of prematurely which
I had at birth. I can't see scorch marks, cracked diodes, and other things.

Bottom line: I had to accept I could no longer do what I used to do.
Difficult, it really is.

I really wish someone would buy the Boom product from Logitech and expand
it. A automobile radio with wide bandwidth AM Stereo, and FM Stereo, with
excellent sensitivity on both bands, complete with WiFi, Bluetooth and a
Solid State Drive and suitable operating system to run Logitech Media
Server. Of course the unit would have bi-amp output bothline level and 8
ohm powered output of suitable power and various speakers configurations
available.

I can see a market for this unit if no one else can.

Now if I could only figure out how to sync the car server with the home
server with rsync.

Best wishes,

David

Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] Using Boom as speakers for TV

2016-03-03 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
I would turn the StereoXL completely off. Under audio settings, set bass
and treble to the center position to start with. When you have dialogue
that is difficult to understand, from a DVD which can be repeated, or from
an old 1940s movie, bring up the treble for clarity, and reduce bass to
reduce echoes in the program material.

You might find that leaving the TV's speakers on allows you to NOT
increase the treble signal of Boom which allows the Boom to retain a wider
response which is suitable for music reproduction while retaining the
increased highs needed in voice reproduction.

Re: [SlimDevices: Boom] Pandora no longer supported (on SB Boom)?

2016-01-01 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Pandora is working on all my Booms - at least when working through my
Squeezebox Server. Try accessing Pandora through mysqueezebox.com
directly. Also if you are using a LMS server, there is a setting that you
sign into mysqueezebox.com - your Pandora settings and user name and
password are stored on mysqueezebox.com both in direct (no LMS server) and
by using mysqueezebox.com directly.

Try logging into pandora.com with a web browser. I just did that and
Pandora resumed my last Squeezebox session by playing Brenda Lee for me!

Good luck with this and HNY to all,
