A Merlin pair has been noticeable around the upper village during April
(single bird first noted on March 16), but it appears that they have not
yet begun to nest. For the last several days, they have been doing a lot of
vocalizing in the immediate vicinity of my house, on the block bounded by

On a walk last evening (April 2) I had a male and female Merlin on treetops
within about 200’ in the upper village of Trumansburg close to the conservatory
on McLallen St. The female was calling steadily. But sheesh, I just passed my
neighbor Marc Devokaitis who reported seeing copulatory behavi

Hi All,
The Merlin nest at Treman is in tact with at least two young. Both parents
were extremely noisy this afternoon when I visited. More so than any other nest
I have observed. I don't know why.

Yesterday evening around 7, while biking up Buffalo St, I heard some strange

bird flew over to a tree at the corner with Schuyler Place. No binoculars so
did not see the noisemakers, but the unusualness could be a fled
About 6:15pm in Cass Park near the Children’s Garden I saw a Merlin flying east
toward the general direction of GIAC. It was coming off West Hill somewhere and
was well above treetop level when it went over me, but appeared to be

I’m right now listening to and watching two Merlins calling to each other from
deciduous trees in the block north of GIAC (Albany and Court) around the

I sure wish you could export some of those Merlins to me up in Auburn. I have
tons of House Sparrows for them to eat.

Nestlings may have fledged, but Merlins still have to eat and hunt. Yesterday (Monday 27 July) at 9:32am I was on Meadow Street waiting to turn left onto Buffalo Street by the FastRack gas station when I heard a short succession of unidentified agitated call notes to my left. Immediately afterward

Well I'm hopeless looking for raptor nests. I went by Christopher Lane
between 6:30 and 7:00 when I thought would be the best times, and didn't
see the Merlin once. Nice that Mark saw it though. I would like to know
of other Merlin sightings, please. (Not that I'm going to see it.)

Hi all,
I have heard the East Ithaca Cemetery merlins several times in morning when I
walk to work, so they must have continued there and may have been successful
in nesting. I mean to stop by at the cemetery and check it out but have had no
chance to do so far.
Also, today I noticed most
This was yesterday evening between 5:15-5:30pm, from the front porch of our
apartment. We were observing the birds across our street, in the backyards
of houses bordered by Hudson, Pleasant, and Prospect St.
We heard a very fast, high pitched "Ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-" (thought woodpecker

A couple of years ago, a merlin took a bluebird on the wing just east of T'Burg
on Cayuga View Rd.
Also a couple of years ago, we had Rock Doves in our barn (squatting squabs?)
and along came a Cooper's hawk and wiped them out over the length of a week.
