[cayugabirds-l] OOB/Chimney Swifts

2010-05-13 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
While this is out of the basin I think it may be of interest to some who might
want to add them to their list.

We arrived in Skaneateles Tues. evening about 6:30 to join friends at the Blue
Water Grill for a delicious meal. For 1/2 hr. before we went inside I had been
watching many Chimney Swifts flying over the business district buildings. After
we went inside my window view allowed me to continue to watch them, a sight
I've always loved.

Many yrs. have passed since I've seen so many swifts. In my early teens, & even
before, on the family farm near Wellsboro, PA I often climbed the tall, wall
ladder to get to the peak of the hay mow where the swifts had their beautifully
made, shiny, varnished-looking, "stick & spit" nests stuck to the side of the
barn. Many times I would hold & pet the birds, marveling at their pointed tails
& their soft feathers. None ever seemed alarmed that I was there. A treasured
memory!

Here in Union Springs I saw only 2 swifts last night. Last yr. I discovered
that swifts are nesting in an unused chimney of people we know. Previously, I
had been unable to discover where they were going to roost.

I might also add, that we had dozens of bats around the barns at night. They
slept in the barn near the swifts in the daytime & oh, horror of horrors, I
often petted them & stretched out their velvety wings!! How much the simple,
wonderful things of life have changed! The innocence of youth . ! Thanks
for the memories!

Fritzie

[cayugabirds-l] Catbird!

2010-05-13 Thread Meena Haribal
Last few days I have been anxiously waiting for the Catbird to come home. One
day I heard some soft catbirds sounds but it turned out he was not from my area.

Today as I walked into my backyard, I was thrilled to hear him, he is back! He
is hiding in the rose bushes and singing with gusto. I will have to start
competing with him for moths early mornings. I have to scare them off before he
wakes up to have a hearty breakfast.

I was seeing catbirds all around and mine had not returned, so i was wondering
if he lost his way in the hurricanes and tornados.

What a reliefe!

I look forward to his songs, hopefully he has added a few more phrases to his
vocabulary!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] id help and Spanish bird names

2010-05-13 Thread Ray Zimmerman
Thanks, several others suggested Palm Warbler ... after looking at some more
photos, I'm convinced that's what it was.

Thanks everyone ... for the ID help and the suggestions about Spanish names.
For others interested in an on-line resource for the Spanish names, Alberto
Lopez mentioned the following site:

Happy birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds nesting

2010-05-13 Thread Kathy Strickland

It's official: the first time ever that I have Bluebirds nesting in my yard!
Out on the closeline pole where John Blizzard put a couple of Doug Carlter's
bluebird boxes. House Wrens usually stake a claim on the one on the tree just
outside the dining rm window, sometimes another pair on the clothesline pole
box, but there was a male Bluebird claiming it this time, and the female nearby
in the redbuds. A Tree Swallow may be in the second one on the pole, but with
my mowing today I think they've all had enough tension so will check it out
more closely another day.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] id help and Spanish bird names

2010-05-13 Thread Matthew Medler
Hi Ray,

Your mystery bird sounds like a western Palm Warbler. Your plumage description
is good, and Palm Warblers are well-known for their tail wagging.

Regarding your question about Spanish bird names, Kenn Kaufman put out a
Spanish-language version to his North American field guide a few years ago. I
don't know if it is readily available or not, but I'm sure you could find out
easily on Amazon.com or some other bookselling site.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods, Th 5/13

2010-05-13 Thread Mark Chao
Most of the migrants in Sapsucker Woods on Thursday morning seemed to be in
the woods, especially on the northeastern stretch of the Hoyt-Pileated
Trail. A prodigious mixed flock here included at least a half-dozen
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, a BAY-BREASTED WARBLER (probable -- heard only),
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, two or more BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS,
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, many YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER, two AMERICAN REDSTARTS (clearly migrants), two NORTHERN PARULAS, a
couple of NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES, and OVENBIRDS, as well as a couple of
non-territorial male SCARLET TANAGERS foraging low in close proximity with
each other. As excellent as this flock was, I got most fired up by a WINTER
WREN singing repeatedly by the egg cairn.

I happened upon this flock at the beginning of my visit. I therefore had
very high hopes when the sun came out and I arrived at the Wilson Trail
North with Tom Hoebbel. Alas, we found very few birds at the wooded edge,
except for a long-tailed bird in the treetops that I am pretty sure was a
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, and singing CANADA WARBLER and Black-throated Blue
Warbler between the Sherwood Platform and the lone bench. Back in the
woods, now with Alicia Plotkin, we found a few more migrants -- another
parula, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, more
Yellow-rumped Warblers, and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH.

Alicia and I headed back to the Lab via the Podell Boardwalk as Tom went to
the East Trail to look for that warbler flock. Right after we parted, we
heard four full series of hoots from a BARRED OWL somewhere in the direction
of the road. Maybe Tom can confirm whether this was a real bird or a person
making mischief. If it was a person, he or she really does a great
impression of the species.

[cayugabirds-l] Two minutes birding

2010-05-13 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,
As I was just walking into the office building, I watched an Eastern Kingbird
in O parking lot trees (near BTI). As I was booting up the computer, I saw a
couple of birds land in the oaks and they turned out to be Yellow-rumped
Warblers! Hope there is more to come! Weather seems perfect for dripping
warblers.
