[cayugabirds-l] K33 and A21
My Christmas day tour of some recent snowy owl spots - Ovid, Aunkst, Martin, Potatoes - found none, though there was a nice gathering of birders at the Potatoes building braving the cold together. In the Union Springs Mill Pond were two swans with yellow wing tags (K33, A21) as has been reported earlier in the month, and at risk of becoming the boy who cries trumpeter, I think that's what these are: http://m.flickr.com/photos/50094151@N03/sets/72157639067923424/ Have the Union Springs regulars been seeing these, and has anyone reported the tags to figure out where they may have come from? Thanks. Suan P.S. For those keeping track, the conclusion from my last possible trumpeter photos from Stewart Park is a tundra (thanks Lee Ann and Kevin). I failed to mention then that that bird did not look noticeably bigger than the other, FWIW. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

When I saw them, I reported them as tundra, but my first thought had been trumpeter. The heads were stained yellowish, and I second-guessed myself – George Fearon photographed K33 clearly and reported it as a trumpeter. Re: [cayugabirds-l] K33 and A21
Follow up on Trumpeter Restoration Project mentioned by Kevin--all yellow wing tags appear to come from Ontario banding. What isn't immediately clear is their numbering system since 2008 (when lots of these were apparently put on). http://honeyharbour.net/reporting-trumpeter-swan-sightings/ has a downloadable info/reporting sheet for tagged swans from the Ontario restoration project as of May 2013. http://www.trumpeterswansociety.org/csp-trumpeter-watch.html has lots more trumpeter watch info and places to report any trumpeter sightings, but especially those well south of us. Also there are some associated pictures, but these look like a brood that must have been banded close to when K33 was banded...assuming banding in alpha-numeric order. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3tlM1p0n_Cs/Up5rsblkCtI/DI8/UqJ8rvPmdOA/s1600/IMG_1761.JPG If the two are sticking together and adults, perhaps they are a pair? anne On Dec 27, 2013, at 9:40 AM, Kevin J. Re: [cayugabirds-l] K33 and A21
Yes, dau. Becky I have been watching the tagged trumpeter swans on Mill pond for 2 wks. or longer. Larue St. Clair was by there on the 20th commented in a C'mas note to us that they were trumpeters. I haven't had time to check my records but I think those wing tag nos. may be the same as on a pr. last yr. that we saw at Mud Lock. Last wk. I counted 71 tundra swans off Frontenac Park. Canadas are flying over the house all around us in greater nos. than in past 3 yrs.. Snows go away for a while but return when fields have less snow. Also on Mill pond have been increasing nos. of redheads (fun watching them doing their water ballet.) Not as many buffles as in the past. We've seen more gadwall on both ponds than for several yrs. down north of Aurora along the shore across from the cemetery are the most black ducks we've seen in 5 yrs.. Re: [cayugabirds-l] K33 and A21
In reply to: Anne Clark who asked: If the two are sticking together and adults, perhaps they are a pair? Larue St. Clair mentioned that he felt the trumpeters they were a pair. I might mention that the first time he, we met, was down towards Long Point the winter after his wife died in Oct. 1993 when he pointed out a swan to us. He was just out looking at birds to give 'him' peace of mind. Such a wonderful man! We love him. [cayugabirds-l] Short Notice CBC Field Trip
I will lead a Cayuga Bird Club trip this coming Sunday. Meet at the Lab at 8 am. We'll spend most of our time checking the lake for waterfowl, plus a few roadsides for larks/buntings/longspurs. I hope to make it as far as Union Springs. Back around 2 pm. The general public is welcome. Bring lunch, binoculars ( scopes). [cayugabirds-l] CBC Owling company?
There are many good potential owl sites in the Cayuga Bird Club Christmas Bird Count, the CBC CBC. I don't want to poach on anyone's intended location for pre-dawn playing of owl calls. I usually try along southern end of Hammond Hill, Flatiron Rd., Rt., 79 near Slaterville, Six Hundred Rd., along Midline including the Park Preserve, Star Stanton Rd., and Thomas Rd for only saw-whets very early in the morning. If no one is doing it, Genung Rd., Ellis Hollow near Pine Tree Rd., and then the walkway near the game farm which usually has a Screech. It is a rush to try to do all of this, and I wouldn't mind someone else doing part of it. I've said that misery loves company, and if anyone wants to join me at anytime between 3:15 and 5:00, we can correspond offline or by phone about where I will be. Good Birding, John Confer 539-6308 PS. So far, all I have heard about means that Area 3 has just me doing the area. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] tundra swans
This evening, at dusk, I saw six tundra swans, one clearly a first year bird, just off the east shore of Cayuga Lake at (little) Gully Road. After having seen the trumpeters closely so recently in Union Springs, these were obviously tundras. Associated ducks, but it was getting too dark for me to see them clearly. [cayugabirds-l] Potato building
Hi Therese, Follow rt. 89 north off US Rt. 20, west of Montezuma Wildlife Refuge, to NY Rt. 31. Turn right. You'll be in the low-lying agricultural mucklands. 0.7 mi. down rt. 31 on the left, the potato building is an old, seemingly unused, cement block building with faint old letters painted on the top: they spell POTATO. You can park your car there ( nowhere else around there) and get out to scan the large, flat fields for birds. This area is north of the Knox Marcellus Marsh. See #57. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy owl
On NYS-31 west of the hamlet/village of Montezuma, there is a long straightaway across the mucklands (dark-soiled, low, seasonally wet farmland) from the bridge over the Seneca River to the fork where NYS-89 comes in. About halfway across on the north side of the road is an abandoned building where one can pull off, park, and look around. If you look closely you may still be able to read the word POTATOES in large block letters across the top of the side facing the road. --Dave NutterOn Dec 27, 2013, at 08:39 PM, Therese O'Connor therese2...@gmail.com wrote:Not sure what everyone means by "potato building".could you give location? On Fri, Dec 27, 2013 at 4:36 PM, Marsha Kardon mkmd...@yahoo.com wrote:Seen on the roof of barn west of the potato building on the opposite side of rt 31 at 4 pm Sent from my iPhone -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ -- --Cayugabirds-L List Info:Welcome and BasicsRules and InformationSubscribe, Configuration and LeaveArchives:The Mail ArchiveSurfbirdsBirdingOnThe.NetPlease submit your observations to eBird!-- -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --
