[cayugabirds-l] Wildlife Photo Ethics

2024-05-08 Thread Carl Steckler

I am going to really stick my neck out here, please don't chop it off.
I was recently asked by a new birder and photographer about "when is a
wildlife photo not a wildlife photo?"

She asked if a photo taken at a zoo of a bird was really a wildlife photo?
She also asked about post production. How much editing was too much
This reminded me of a photo that I submitted to the CBC annual photo
night. I was a photo of three woodpeckers
a Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied at a log feeder that I had set up. I
tried for hours to get a photo of all three together.
I finally gave up and created a photo of all three in Photoshop. I did
confess to this the evening of the program so I

wasn't trying to fool anybody, just show a photo of all three.
Now all three woodpeckers were wild birds and I did take the photos, but
would this be considered "wildlife photography?
I have recently seen some wonderful "photos" created by AI, but again
are they wildlife photos? So I am asking for your
opinion as to what is and what isn't a "real" wildlife photo? Where does
it begin and end?
you can PM me at c...@cornell.edu but I think this discussion should be
on the list.

thanks
Carl

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: [The Washington Post] Dozens of bird names honoring enslavers and racists will be changed

2023-11-04 Thread Carl Steckler
I agree Dave, but I feel it is the right decision for the wrong reasons.
Changing the names to better describe the bird, good.

Changing the name because of what someone did in the past is wrong.

you really have to look at the person in the context of their time,
their morals and their laws.

If the bird was named for someone other than the discoverer, then by all
means change it.

But if it is named after the person who discovered the bird you really
have to consider the contributions made by this person and ask do they
outweigh the faults?

And what about the Latin names. A lot of them are named for people. Are
we going to change those also?

Again while I am in favor of changing the names to better describe the
birds, let that be the reason for the change and not for any agenda
which may or may not have anything to do with ornithology.

It is a slippery slope we climb my friends.

Ornamythelogy. The belief that you will actully see the bird every one
else is reporting.

[cayugabirds-l] Tiny Wrens?

2023-07-31 Thread Carl Steckler
This morning at my feeders I saw two of the smallest birds I have ever
seen. They were scarcely larger than the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that I
have.
They were not hummingbirds but looked like miniature wrens, about half the
size of the Carolina Wrens that frequent the feeders.
My question is , are fledgling wrens really that small?

[cayugabirds-l] Conservation vs Ecology

2023-06-03 Thread Carl Steckler
Well, let me state right out front that I am about to ignite a fire storm.

Are we conservationists or are we ecologists? Hope to instruct things like
green energy and the impact on wildlife.

For the ecologists among you, you place a high value on green, renewable
energy, but at the same time you are ignoring the fact that green energy is
detrimental to wildlife and plant life

Wind, turbines, kill hundreds of birds and bats every year. Both of these
activities are illegal but the fact that it is green energy seems to
overlook the fact that we’re destroying what we seek to keep.

More and more grassland is disappearing under the covering of silicon,
solar panels not only are the wildlife dispossessed, but so too is the
flora. Wildlife can relocate, although it may not be to a suitable habitat,
but the plants cannot relocate and often end up dying, because the sun that
gives them nourishment is now blocked by solar panels

Unfortunately, the argument about green energy global warming has become
more political than environmental
The science of green energy global warming climate change whatever you want
to call it is flawed
Some like to say that global warming climate change is caused by humans.
Well, I’ve seen many studies that support that and many studies that
disprove that.
what I haven’t seen yet is a good scientific reason why the earth goes into
an Ice Age and why the earth comes out of an Ice Age
And yet again, there are many theories, but they are just that theories
Without knowing the causes of an ice age or the causes of an ice age
ending, we are missing a big chunk of cause-and-effect

Does anyone disagree that when an ice age ends it gets warmer? Conversely,
when an ice age starts, it gets colder and it has been doing that for a lot
longer time than humans have been on this earth.

So think about it do we want to be climate activist or do we want to be
conservationist preserving what we have on this planet preserving the
ecosystem that the animals and plants of this planet so desperately need

I am not arguing, one way or another I have my beliefs, and you probably
have yours. My purpose is to take a good look at the differences between
conservation and ecology.

[cayugabirds-l] Mobility Impaired Birding

2022-09-25 Thread Carl Steckler
For those who are mobility impaired birding has few choices and even fewer
acceptable choices. I sincerely doubt that few of us (birders) would object
to a birder in a wheelchair, either pushed or electric. But what if you
could walk, just not very far or very long?
Would an electric scooter or some other evehicle be acceptable?
As technology improves evehicles, whether two, three or four wheels, become
more available and eco friendly.
The question is as a birder is how acceptable are you in allowing those
with mobility issues to take advantage of the emerging technology that is
available?
Simply put, how much are you willing to accommodate your fellow birders
with disabilities?
And hopefully a lively discussion ensues.

First it was statues, then military bases.
Now the target of the woke crowd are birds.
The American Ornithological Society is thinking about changing the names of

Common people there is no room for political correctness in bird watching,

Or did I just miss the memo?

Please don’t let this hysteria ruin our hobby.

There may be scientific reasons to change the name but unit for political
reasons.

Birding is and should be open and available to every person, period.

[cayugabirds-l] CBC Conowingo Field Trip

2020-02-17 Thread Carl Steckler
Once again I am cancelling the CBC field  trip to Conowingo Dam. Not
because of weather this time but due to lack of Bald Eagles. According
to eBird the highest count this month was four. Most days only one or
two. Not sure where they all went but not enough to warrant a trip there.

Maybe next winter

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles at Conowingo Dam

2017-11-23 Thread Carl Steckler

First , Happy thanksgiving to every one.

I am thinking of taking a trip to Conowingo MD to see the Bald Eagles
who come by the hundreds to fish at the dam there, also there are
thousands of Gulls.
It is a 4 1/2 hour trip one way and will be a long day, leaving at 6:00
AM and returning that evening.   We will stop for lunch on the way and
again on the way back.
I am thinking that Sat. Dec. 1st would be a good day. The weather is
forecast to be clear and in the mid 50s.

If you are interested please PM me at c...@cornell.edu

Re:[cayugabirds-l] eNews: An App That Can ID Your Bird Photos

2016-12-13 Thread Carl Steckler
The new version of Merlin is fantastic. Not only will it identify photos
of birds taken with your phone, you can take a photo from the LCD screen
of your Digital camera. It should work with digiscoping as well. I gave
it a workout on the recent CBC field trip to Niagara Falls and it was
near 100% correct on identification. At worst it gave you the correct
bird on the second or third choice. It even identified Charley Harper
birds. We even went so far as to take selfies to see what bird Merlin
identified us as, great fun. No I won't say which bird Merlin identified
my selfie as.
I can say that the Merlin team has brought this app a long way and it
will be a great addition to both beginners and advanced birders. Good
work Team Merlin.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl - Not

2016-10-27 Thread Carl Steckler
Having seen this bird yesterday I can well understand why the
misdentification. When looking through a 600mm camera lens from a
distance it did seem to have the markings of a Snowy. It was only after
seeing it through a scope did I see the red tail and head. Without
these two positive identifiers I can well understand someone, even an
experienced birder, making the wrong identification. I do not think this
hawk is an albino though as it did not completely lack pigmentation.
Leucism seems to be more likely as there was not a total lack of
colorization, it plainly had the markings of a Red-tail, just with
mostly white feathers.

Thanks to all who responded. They are indeed Honeybees as identified by

The swarm has doubled since earlier this morning and now the birds are
staying away, except for the woodpeckers.
I think that when it gets dark and the bees are gone I will remove my
seed feeders for a few days. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Thanks

[cayugabirds-l] Reporting Locations

2016-02-22 Thread Carl Steckler
First thanks to all who report on this list. This is not meant to
criticize anyone but to ask for further refinement?
I would like to ask that if we can we be a little more accurate in
reporting locations. If a report is at Myers Park could you be a little
more specific? Is it in the marina, the spit or 1000 yards off shore?
Likewise such locations as the Aurora Boathouse. Again is the report by
the dock at the boathouse or 1000 yards off shore? I know that some
might think this is a bit picayune but to many like myself who not only
wish to see the bird but photograph it as well it does make a
difference. And think of the poor beginning birder who ends up
disappointed in only seeing that speck on the lake.

Again thanks to all who report, and thanks for understanding.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] guns at Stewart Park

2015-11-13 Thread Carl Steckler
Yet another good reason to buy a Duck Stamp. That way you can show your
support for conservation and that you are not against their activity per
say, just the location. I am willing to bet that if you showed that you
too had a duck stamp and explained your concern that this is a city park
things would have been a lot more pleasant and might have made an
impression that we birders are not just a bunch of anti-hunting
treehuggers . IMHO

[cayugabirds-l] CBC Trip Sat. To Find Gray Jays

2015-10-22 Thread Carl Steckler
Just a reminder, I will be leading a CBC trip to Ferd's Bog and Sabattis
Bog in the Adirondacks this Saturday.

We will meet in the parking lot closest to the Lab of O at 7:00 AM
I have room for one more person in my Jeep so if you can drive let me
know how many passengers you can take.
This will be a full day trip with stops for lunch and dinner, but bring
along a snack and drinks.
The weather is forecast to be in the low 50s, but that can change so
bring warm clothing and be prepared for snow.
We will be looking foe boreal species like the Gray Jay, Boreal
Chickadee and Black-backed Woodpecker.
There were some recent sightings of Spruce Grouse by DEC Park Rangers,
so cross your fingers.
This trip is open to all birders, not just CBC members, so I am hopping
to see a lot of you join us.

You can contact me at c...@cornell.edu or (607) 592-8798

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Sabattis Bog Trip 10/24

2015-10-17 Thread Carl Steckler
I plan on stopping at Ferd's Bog, but I thought that a dinner in Old
Forge would be a good place to stop and take a break. There are also
some good motels in Tupper Lake and closer to Bloomingdale.
I guess we could see how many might want to stay overnight I have stayed
at Shaheen's Motel and it is quite nice.
I guess the question is how many would like to make it an overnight
trip? All in favor of an overnight contact me.

[cayugabirds-l] Gray Jay Trip = CBC Field Trip

2015-10-16 Thread Carl Steckler
Well it looks like the Gray Jay trip has morphed into a Cayuga Bird Club
field trip.

We will be leaving at 7:00 AM Sat. Oct 24^th .from the parking lot at
the Lab of O and caravanning to Sabattis Bog in the Adirondacks. This
will be a full day trip so bring snacks and drinks. We will stop for
lunch and dinner along the way.

We will explore the region around Sabattis Bog for northern bird
species. We may take some short side trips in some of the access (read
dirt) roads nearby.Leaving the area around 5:00 PM for the return trip home.

Depending on the number of people we will need enough vehicles to
accommodate. I can fit two into my Wrangler. If you can take passengers
please let me know. This trip is open to all birders, not just club
members, but please contact me so I know how many are going.(607) 592

With the weather forecast not looking good I have decided to push the
trip back to Sat the 24th. Also the response was greater than the
seating capacity of my Wrangler so if there is someone else that can
provide a vehicle it looks like it should be a good trip.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] and thank you, Dave Nutter!

2015-07-12 Thread Carl Steckler
I would like to chime in here. Dave your info and perspective are right
on. The problem I have is having everyone relying so heavily on a petition.

Having given comment , all be it about Wolves, to both DEC and FWS on
several occasions concerning de-listing or changing status of wildlife I
have learned that petitions do not carry as much weight as you would think.
After talking to several FWS agents and hearing their comments
concerning petitions I have come to the conclusion that a letter
directly to the agency, clearly marked as comment about the change of
protection to the Golden-cheeked Warbler will do much more than a
petition. Both the people from DEC and FWS have told me that petitions
do not carry much weight because there is little thought and effort to
sign a petition, it is too easy and anyone can do it without really
knowing the issues. I have also heard this statement from several
prominent wildlife biologists.

Even a short letter outlining why you believe that a change is either
warranted or not warranted with sound biological reasons, and certainly
loss of habitat certainly qualifies as a sound biological reason, means
a lot more to those reviewing the issue. If FWS suddenly started
receiving dozens of letters commenting about this issue they will be
more motivated to look at the situation a lot closer before making a
decision.

Is it worth you buying a stamp and spending a few minutes writing a
letter? You bet it is. In these days of electronic mail and web based
petitions a letter still carries a lot more weight. So sit down and
wright please.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] rare bird rant

2015-02-27 Thread Carl Steckler
OK, here is the problem I have with eBiird. I just checked for sightings
in New York State and the only sighting listed was from Dave Nutter on
Feb 22. Nothing since then. I get eBird alerts for Seneca and Cayuga
county. What I get are Chipping Sparrow, no Gyrfalcon. Granted eBird is
great for collecting data, but for alerting birders to rare birds it is,
pardon the expression, for the birds.
Maybe I am doing something wrong in my eBird settings, but it is not
clear to me, and if it not clear it is not useful.

Now if only someone could help me get on the local alert net I would be
grateful.

The great part of using eBird as Bob does is that rare bird sightings

The RBA system still has the advantage of immediacy reaching flip
phones, but can detract from the personal experience just a little. I
don't feel the same loss when using BirdLog and will advocate that
others try it and judge for themselves.
This comes from a dedicated notebook user.

[cayugabirds-l] RBA text aleart system

2014-08-15 Thread Carl Steckler
A number of birders have commented about re instituting a text based RBA
system like the one we once had that was managed by Dave Nutter. As I
understand that the old system went away because there was going to be
charge for the service. I am wondering if a similar system could be set
up with a small fee for subscription to cover the costs would readers of
this list be interested?

Right now I either get alerts from this list via e-mail or Ebird RBA
alerts ( which are a day old). I would like to know if there is enough
interest in having an instant RBA text system again?

If there are enough people interested I would be willing to manage the
system, but I would need the help of someone who understands this kind
of system better than I do to help get it set up.

If you are interested please let me know by PM at c...@cornell.edu and
use RBA Text as the subject.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Foot Traffic on the Wildlife Drive at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge

2014-08-14 Thread Carl Steckler
I have to respectively disagree with your conclusion and decision to
curtail people getting out of their cars on the wildlife drive.
First viewing is severely restricted by the vegetation that has been
allowed to grow along the drive necessitating that one get out of the
car to see anything that is not flying.

Second the traffic of the personnel working on the terraforming causes
much more disruption. I realize that this is necessary, but it does
cause more disruption than foot traffic. This would be compounded by
providing and maintaining additional stops along the drive.

Third the complaints you have received have come from a very few people.
If you were to conduct a survey you would find that most people have no
problem with others getting out of the car and in fact end up seeing
much more of the wildlife they come to see. If you want a pristine
refuge with a severely restricted viewing public either close the gates
or have everyone ride on buses to view wildlife.

Fourth what you will create is a situation where your inforcement
officers will have to spend much more of their limited time herding the
viewing public back into their cars instead of their much more important
jobs.

Fifth in reality the problem is very much self regulating. Most people
who get out of their cars do so for short periods and if they see
someone going toff the road will say something. You would have a much
better use of your limited funds by allowing people to be out of their
cars on the drive and posting signs to stay on the drive.

Sixth your proposal would severely limit the use of the wildlife drive
to educational groups where there are several vehicles in a group.
Those in the front will see something while those further back will not.
Also this will curtail the use of using a spotting scope to view
wildlife that is not close to the drive.

In conclusion please rethink your decision to restrict the drive and
make it more friendly to the viewing public who in reality own and pay
for the refuge. I do believe that the intended purpose in allowing the
viewing public is part of your mandate. Perhaps you should invite some
of your users to meet with and comment to your policy makers.

Thank you

Re: [cayugabirds-l] House Finch question

While we have at least 2 pairs of Purple Finches and more Goldfinches than
I can easily count, as well as usual numbers of other common species, from

numbers?

I have just the opposite, except for the Goldfinches, lots of House
Finches, no Purple Finches here in Dryden.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Royal Terns at Myer's Spit

2014-04-24 Thread Carl Steckler

 Hi everyone,

I believe these are Caspian Terns. There is quite a bit of variation
in bill color of Caspians and they can puff up the rear of their crown
to make them appear a bit more like Royal Tern. Royal would have a
thinner bill that is more orange in color (sometimes at this time of
year they can appear quite red) and pale underside of the wings in
flight. Perhaps the easiest way to tell the two apart here, is that
 Royal isn't here.

Royals occasionally stray north, but inland birds are exceptional with
almost all showing up during a hurricane. One would not find a flock
(or probably even a lone bird) on Cayuga Lake without a hurricane or
 other exceptional weather.

Meg and I just came from Myers. Based on my photos I would have to agree
with Chris that these are Caspian Terns, not Royal. The bill has a dark
tip with a little bit of yellow at the very tip.
