many minutes, allowing wonderful scope viewing.

Seen in next to Hopkins Rd, 7:30 AM today. Some made forays into the
adjacent soybean field. This is an unusual sighting for me. Are there
more of them around this year or was I just lucky to catch a group moving
through this area?
I also saw a pair of BROWN THRASHERS in my back yard at 6:30
I didn't get any last year.

Today a fox sparrow and a field sparrow joined the local juncos and
whitethroats dining on the millet I spread. I guess there is a mixed flock
of sparrows migrating south.

A pair seen about 9 AM today under our backyard feeder. This is about 3
days after our daily flock of 15 white-throated sparrows stopped coming.

About 9:30 AM today while walking from Cass Park to Hog Hole, we saw what
we thought were loons swimming near the red buoy/lighthouse past the jetty
at the south end of Cayuga Lake. There were about 35. I wanted to report
them to Ebird but was advised they are rare for this date and location,
Here is a screen shot of the eggs (6!). I will add more screenshots from
time to time.

I go out to fill our bird feeders after dark every day. Sometimes I
hear the call of a great horned owl, barred owl, or screech owl.
Wednesday night I think I heard a barn owl scream--a very even trill
lasting 2-4 seconds, repeated every minute or so about 6 times. I
never heard this call before.
On Jan 3 I tried to attach a link to the photos on the listserv but
failed. I have entered a checklist for the "Wegmans canal area" hotspot on
Ebird. If you click "view details' you will see my listing of "duck sp."
with photos as the 11th entry.

was with 2 male mallards and 1 female mallard.

We get many red-winged blackbirds at our feeder. On May 6 we saw a
juvenile/immature one, which we have never seen before. Is this a 2020
hatchling which hasn't molted yet?

Today I checked all 4 of my nestboxes. There are two groups of two each.
The two groups are about 350 ft apart. The group where I saw a male house
sparrow 2 days ago had a male house sparrow sitting on top of it again.
There was the same nest in the box but no eggs. The other box was empty.

I have 2 nest boxes, about 20-30 feet apart, intended for bluebirds and
tree swallows. Today I saw a male house sparrow sitting on top of one
box--inside was a nest but no eggs. The other box had a dead tree swallow
in it, no nest materials. Does anyone know what happened?
Thanks,
Fred Kardon
I have a large field and have put up some bluebird/tree swallow nesting
boxes. I am considering putting up some more, but would like to know how
many acres is needed to support one bluebird or one tree swallow nest box?
I have searched the internet and gotten conflicting answers.
Thanks,
Fred
I have a busy feeder. About 2 weeks ago I found a dead goldfinch,
completely intact, in my backyard, too far away from the house to be a bird
strike. Today I found a dead purple finch, also completely intact and far
from windows. I put the purple finch in a box in my garage. Can it be
tested
I counted 14 purple finches at my feeder, only 2 males. Are some of the
"females" actually first-winter males?
