[cayugabirds-l] Hairy woodpecker question

2015-12-13 Thread Judith Jones
There was lots of activity at my downtown backyard feeders this am including a pair of hairy woodpeckers, so I looked more closely than usual and saw a large white puffy tuft at the rear of the female's beak. Sibley calls this out for the female downy - "conspicuous tuft of nasal bristles"

I was called to 419 Geneva to identify this bird found dead on their sidewalk. It is in good condition, no visible wound. This was bird count territory for me, and had the largest mixed flock of the day. I hazard a guess that it was hit by a car when in pursuit of a bird at the feeder across

I have had what I think is a gold finch (pink bill and feet) sleeping or resting all around my downtown back yard all day. The feathers are fluffed out, lots of white down both sides of yellow breast. Minimal response to noises, just resettles with head tucked into back. Is the bird molting ,
