[cayugabirds-l] FOY Brown Thrasher in Newfield

I got several good looks at my FOY Brown Thrasher this morning. This is the 
earliest arrival I've recorded in my neighborhood, by one day.

Merlin reported what would be a FOY Field Sparrow, but I was too busy watching 
the Brown Thrasher and the 2 Northern Mockingbirds to notice.

[cayugabirds-l] more blackbirds!

I just had a good 100 Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds in my Newfield back 
yard. They flew up into nearby trees after decimating the feeders. Then came a 
Red-tailed Hawk to perch in one of the trees, and then came 6 Crows to mob the 
hawk.

It's really starting to sound like spring with all that noisy activity.

The resident Ravens are becoming more active these days as well.

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebird sleeping quarters

Each night, there are 4 Eastern Bluebirds tucking themselves into crooks and 
crannies of a locust tree behind my house.  They gather on the tree in the 
afternoon and emerge at first light.  I can't tell them apart so I wonder if 
they each go to the same spot or if they vie for the choicest spots.

I've been watching two of them tuck in from my "office" (aka dining room table) 
while I'm working from home.  Two others stay in spots on the tree that I can't 
see, but they all gather for a few minutes in the morning.

It's been going on for at least two weeks, probably longer.  I doubt it's 
unusual but I have never seen it before, and it's so much fun to watch!

[cayugabirds-l] Redpolls in Newfield yesterday

A flock of around 50 Common Redpolls visited my Newfield back yard yesterday 
around noon.  It may have been more than 50, but I was indoors and they were 
very close to the house, so I could only count them in small groups.  They 
stayed for just a few minutes, but what a treat those few minutes were!
I didn't see which direction they came from or went.

There was flock of at least 150 blackbirds in Newfield ~7:00 this morning. I 
saw Grackles and Starlings, and maybe heard a few Red-Winged Blackbirds in the

We just had a large flock of Starlings come through just north of West Danby 
~8:50. It was like a scene from "The Birds." The lawn was black with birds.

Then about 09:00 a smaller group of several dozen came through.

Yesterday, Wed, was when we actually got 6 RWB instead of just one or two. The 
fields are alive with the sounds of RWB.

I’m seeing quite a lot of activity at my feeders in Newfield, but fewer 
American Goldfinches for some reason. Over 20 Mourning Doves, lots of House 
Finches, DE Juncos, Northern Cardinals, Blue Jays, Chickadees and Tufted 
Titmouse, several Downy, Hairy, and Red-bellied woodpeckers, 2 Pileated 
woodpeckers, one American Tree Sparrow and 2 White-throated Sparrows (my 
favorite). I also hear an Eastern Screech Owl once a week or so.

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park swan pen Baltimore Oriole nest

Being a semi-noob birder, I'm going to say I'm not 100% sure of what I saw, 
never having watched Orioles do this ...

I think I spotted a Baltimore Oriole nest under construction yesterday. With 
binoculars I was able to follow a male carrying nest material from the lake 
side of the path to the tall maple tree on the swan pen 'island'. He stayed up 
there a while and I was able to see the sack-shaped nest as leaves moved with 
the wind. I gather the female was nearby or busy building. It will likely be 
hidden once the tree finishes leafing out.

The nest is on the north-ish side (facing the lake) of the tallest maple on the 
island, a few feet from the top.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Yellowthroat in Cornell's Wee Stinky Glen

The one day I didn't carry my binoculars! I've never heard a Common 
Yellowthroat anywhere near there.

It was singing from the honeysuckle bushes along the creek south of the stone 
footbridge, at ~11:45 this morning. I didn't have time to stick around and get 
a look at it.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-bellied sapsucker

I believe I spotted a yellow-bellied sapsucker at my feeders in Newfield this 
afternoon. I could only see its back and head, and while I haven't seen many 
that close, I am very familiar with all of the year-round woodpeckers here, and 
it wasn't any of the usual visitors.

I heard them in the woods nearby this spring and summer, but is it possible 
that any stuck around?

[cayugabirds-l] Red-tailed hawk and Crow at Sage Hall, Cornell campus

Twice today I've watched a crow dive-bombing a Red-tailed Hawk as it sits 
perched atop one or another of the Sage Hall spires.  The hawk seems

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Carolina Wrens nesting in hanging baskets

I had my first ever Carolina Wren nest in a hanging basket of tuberous begonias 
this summer.  One person I told said, Of course you do! They successfully 
raised and fledged five chicks. They're nesting all over my property in 
Newfield. I hear the buzzy I'm bringing food sound all day long every day. 
They now visit a basket of fuschias but I don't think they have a nest there. I 
thought they would but they just hang out there. They've put a serious dent in 
the bug population this year. I'll definitely encourage their return.

pointed-top nest baskets that one hangs up somewhere - mine are under the roof 
of my front porch. Now one (or more?) of the wrens sleeps at night in another 
one of those baskets on the other side under the porch roof (I have 3 of those 
hung up under there).

I leave my big, browned not-so-evergreen Xmas wreath up on my front door long 
after winter because I like the way it smells and it is always nicely decorated 
with natural plants (by me). One year a Carolina Wren built a beautiful nest in 
the center of the wreath against the door. It lined the whole thing with soft 
green moss and laid its eggs.
As soon as  discovered the nest, I stopped using the front door and put ladders 
in front of the step to the porch to keep people from approaching the door. We 
all had to use the door from the garage. Sometimes I stood nearby to observe 
the babies in the nest and take a few photos and later they successfully 
fledged, I think.
Sometimes I put the old wreath on the side wall of my recessed front porch and 
now and then the wrens build a nest in the center of it over there.

This year I heard that monotonous vocalization (that Lindsay described) from 
the parent around the time the young were about to fledge. For a while one baby 
stood on top of the nest basket, as the parent chattered away, then baby went

I live by Cayuga Lake (so a little warmer here in winter), and I have Carolina 
Wrens here all winter visiting my many bird feeders, and have had for at least 
a decade. I think there are as many wrens here as ever and that they survived 
this last real winter OK, perhaps due to bird feeders -- although I think I 
am one of the only residents on Lansing Station Road that keeps feeders full in 
winter ( all year round).

   I was interested in Dave Nutter’s recent reports on a pair of Carolina wrens 
that successfully nested in a hanging planter on his back porch. It was just a 
few days after his first report (7/18) that we noticed Carolina wrens carrying 
nesting material to a hanging basket of fuchsia suspended from a beam under the 
ceiling of our otherwise unenclosed back porch. By the weekend of 7/26-7/27, we 
suspected that they were incubating their clutch. August 10 was the first day 
we observed food being brought to the nest, but the eggs may have hatched a day 
or so earlier. My wife saw an adult bringing food to the nest early in the 
morning on 8/21, but the nest was empty by the afternoon, and so, to our great 
disappointment, we totally missed what we assume was the successful fledging of 
the young. We never peered into the nest (a domed structure with the entrance 
located on the side facing the backyard) to count babies, either. The nest 
location was about 10 feet from our back door and five feet from a kitchen 
window from which we could observe the activity. Since we spend very little 
time sitting on the porch, the birds took little or no notice of us and flew 
fairly directly to the nest when delivering food. We once heard them making 
nervous-sounding vocalizations when a seemingly oblivious chipmunk loitered for 
awhile on the ground under their nest location until we drove it away. My wife 
also once saw the wrens drive away a downy woodpecker that landed briefly on a 
post near the nest. Though we rarely heard the male giving its full song during 
the nesting period, at least one of the birds (the male?) spent an amazing

[cayugabirds-l] Carolina Wrens

Hi all,

There are 2 Carolina Wrens attempting to build nests in hanging baskets on my 
porch. Is that normal behavior? Should I discourage them? I'm not sure how I'll 
be able to water the plants without damaging the nests. What will happen to 
them over the winter?

[cayugabirds-l] Another nesting Carolina Wren question

They really went to town today. The hollowed out parts of both baskets are 
stuffed with moss and all kinds of other material.

One basket is accessible by chipmunks, which I know is disastrous for the 
wrens. It's hanging on a shepherd's hook attached to the porch railing. I can 
remove the hook and hang the basket directly from the roof, foiling the 
chipmunks. It would mean moving the basket about a foot. Do I dare move it at 
this point?

I moved it this afternoon. Also redirected some vines that could serve as 
launch points for the chipmunks. That kind of sucks because the vines also 
serve as shelter and perches. I think they'll be fine. I'll send photos as 
things progress. This is very exciting.
