Fwd: [cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club May meeting

Reply-To: Colleen Richards

The next monthly meeting of the Cayuga Bird Club will be next Monday, May 13
at 7:30 at Foundation of Light, 391 Turkey Hill Rd., Ithaca, NY. Meetings start
with social time at 7:00pm, the reading of the bird list at 7:20pm, and club
business at 7:30pm, followed by the speaker's presentation starting around
8:00pm and ending by 9:00pm. Marie Read will present, "Return to Puffin
Paradise: Alaska’s Pribilof Islands". Ever since her first visit to Alaska’s
Pribilof Islands in 2015, Marie dreamed of returning to this remote island
group far out in the Bering Sea. The Pribilofs are often described as a bird
photographer’s paradise, home to millions of nesting seabirds. Three species of
auklet, murres, cormorants, and kittiwakes including the endemic Red-legged
species, pose photogenically on lichen-covered rocks or precipitous cliff
faces. The avian stars though are those adorable clowns of the sea: Horned and
Tufted Puffins. Marie hoped to photograph them carrying fish for their young in
early August, when the islands are at their most fog-shrouded. Getting to the
Pribilofs can be an adventure, fraught with flight cancellations, as Marie
would discover. After a failed attempt in 2022, in July 2023 she made it!
She’ll share her experiences and lots of great photos. About the speaker: Local
bird photographer Marie Read’s photos are published in magazines, books, and
calendars worldwide. She’s won numerous awards, including Highly Commended for
Birds in Flight in the 2023 Bird Photographer of the Year Contest. Her articles
and photo essays about bird behavior and bird photography have appeared in
Living Bird, Bird Watching, Nature’s Best, and Wild Planet, among others. She
also has authored or co-authored six books, including the best-selling title
Mastering Bird Photography: the Art, Craft and Technique of Photographing Birds
and Their Behavior. Colleen Richards Corresponding Secretary Cayuga Bird Club
Cayuga Bird Club meetings are held on the second Monday of each month,
September through June, and are free and open to the public. We will attempt to
make presentations available virtually as a recording posted a few days later,
on our YouTube channel @cayugabirdclub. Some meetings may shift to Zoom if
warranted by circumstances.

[cayugabirds-l] Jelly or no jelly - that is the question

2024-05-10 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all,
I have been feeding grape jelly to birds for years and find the recent
discussion about whether that is good or bad for birds very interesting, and at
the same time distressing. Can anyone who has been suggesting that feeding
jelly is bad point to any study that has shown this to be true (jelly which
does not have preservatives nor food coloring) ?

I have been looking at the scientific literature (using google scholar) for any
credible studies that suggest feeding sucrose-laden jelly (white sugar is
sucrose) is bad for the birds which we see coming to snack (orioles,
rose-breasted grosbeaks, catbirds, downy woodpeckers, house finch) and have
found nothing that supports this claim. While here are many studies looking at
digestion in wild birds, nutrition of fruits and seeds, affects of supplemental
feeding (seeds, not jelly) I have found nothing so far that suggests that
feeding jelly is harmful. Generally, it seems birds select foods from which
they derive nutrition and for which their digestive systems are able to
process. I have also not found any study that looks specifically at the
effects on birds of consuming jelly.

So, I have decided to feed more oranges and to cut back on the jelly, but not
to eliminate it entirely. Wild birds seem able to know what is good for them.

Any thoughts?
Laura

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club March 11 Monthly Meeting

2024-03-10 Thread Laura Stenzler
Tomorrow, Monday, March 11, will be the next monthly meeting of the Cayuga Bird
Club.

Linda Ziemba, MNWR Wildlife Biologist, will give her presentation, "Wetland
Management for Migratory Birds at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge" on
Monday, March 11, 2024, 7:30pm at Foundation of Light at 391 Turkey Hill Rd.;
social time starts at 7 pm, the reading of the bird list at 7:20, and club
business at 7:30 followed by the presentation.

Members are invited to join Linda for dinner at Sumo Restaurant in the Cayuga
Mall at 5:30 p.m. before the meeting. Please RSVP to Colleen Richards at
cl...@juno.com by noon Monday so reservations can be made.

The 10,000-acre Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in the Finger Lakes Region
of New York is located in what was historically called the Montezuma Marshes.
The marshes were drained as a result of dam and canal construction in the early
1900s, and area wildlife virtually went the way of the water—gone. Establishing
the Montezuma NWR in 1938 was the first step of many to restore the area back
to its historic expanse of marshes—an area thriving with wildlife. Linda Ziemba
will discuss how staff at Montezuma continue to restore historic marshes and
manage wetlands for migratory birds.

About the Speaker: Linda Ziemba has been the wildlife biologist at the
Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge since 2006. She is passionate about
providing habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife and providing
opportunities for people to connect with nature as land stewards. She began her
career in wildlife biology as a volunteer at E.B. Forsythe National Wildlife
Refuge in New Jersey in 1994 and has also worked at Izembek, Cape May, and
Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuges.
Members are invited to join Linda for dinner at Sumo Restaurant in the Cayuga
Mall at 5:30 p.m. before the meeting. Please RSVP to Colleen Richards at

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club February 2024 meeting

2024-02-12 Thread Laura Stenzler
TONIGHT!!!

The February meeting of the Cayuga Bird Club will be a Zoom meeting on Monday,
Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Register (for free) at http://tinyurl.com/cbc-2024-02

We hope you will join us for the presentation, "Bird-window collisions: a
clear and present danger". Luke DeGroote, Carnegie Museum of Natural History,
will be our speaker.

Smack! That's the sound of a bird hitting a window-and you've probably heard it
often.
Collisions with windows cause millions of bird fatalities every year. Luke
DeGroote will discuss how Carnegie Museum of Natural History is addressing the
issue by elucidating where collisions are more likely to occur, testing
collision reducing markers at Powdermill Nature Reserve's experimental flight
tunnel, tracking post-collision survival using new technologies, and reducing
collisions through community engagement.
About the Speaker: Luke DeGroote received his MSc. in Natural Resources from
Ohio State and B.S. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Since 2012, DeGroote has overseen Carnegie Museum of
Natural History's avian research programs including the operation of
Powdermill's Avian Research Center (PARC) where he studies songbird migration,
avian disease, breeding phenology, and avian perception of glass. DeGroote
aims to promote avian conservation through research, partnerships, and outreach.

Hope many of you will be onscreen with us.

Corresponding Secretary

[cayugabirds-l] Don’t forget!!! Cayuga Bird Club December 11 meeting and speaker dinner -Madagascar!

2023-12-09 Thread Laura Stenzler
The December meeting of the Cayuga Bird Club Monday will be held December 11 at
7:30pm at Foundation of Light, 391 Turkey Hill Rd.
In-person meetings start with social time at 7:00pm, the reading of the bird
list at 7:20pm, and club business at 7:30pm, followed by the speaker's
presentation starting around 8:00pm

Our speaker, Ton Schat, Cayuga Bird Club member, traveler, and photographer
will be presenting - "Madagascar: Birds, Lemurs, Chameleons, and Other Amazing
Critters

In November 2022, Ton joined the tour group Birding Africa on their “Madagascar
Endemic Birds and Lemur Tour,” which had been postponed twice due to the Covid
pandemic. During the 22 days, they started in the capital Antananarivo (“Tana”)
followed by visits to the northeast (Masoala) and the northwest (Betsiboka
Delta and Ankarafantsika). In the second part of the tour, many of the National
Parks on the east side of Madagascar were explored and they ended in the
Southwest (Ifaty and Toliara). The program will start with a short introduction
to Madagascar, followed by many photos and a discussion of some of the endemic
bird families such as the Vangas. Ton will also give us a look at lemurs and
other critters observed during the trip.

About the Speaker: Ton Schat has been a member of the Cayuga Bird Club for over
40 years and has presented several programs to the club in the past. He retired
from the faculty of the Cornell Veterinary College in 2011 where he studied and
researched avian viruses and immunology. Ton has traveled extensively for work
and for pleasure and, especially since retirement, has become an avid bird and
wildlife photographer.

There will be a speaker dinner before the meeting at 5:30 at the Sumo
Restaurant at the Cayuga Mall. Please rsvp by noon on Mon., Dec. 11 to
cl...@juno.com for reservations.

Hope to see you there.

[cayugabirds-l] new spring birds

2023-03-22 Thread Laura Stenzler
Lots of activity under the feeders this nice spring day. Our first of the year
red-breasted nuthatch, fox sparrow (singing as well as foraging under the
feeders) and female red-winged blackbirds. In addition, a flock of 25 grackles
has descended this afternoon. The Carolina wren that has been around all
winter is visiting today and a female pileated woodpecker joined the numerous
downy and hairy woodpeckers to work the suet feeders. 2 song sparrows showed
up yesterday and are singing away this afternoon. Oh, and yesterday we had a
visit from 8 turkeys - a species that has been absent from our yard for the
last 2-3 years, whereas they were reliable visitors before that.
  Happy Spring!

removal of dead or diseased birds and subsequent testing needs to be done by

[cayugabirds-l] REMINDER: Cayuga Bird Club December 2022 meeting

2022-12-11 Thread Laura Stenzler
The December meeting of the Cayuga Bird Club will be on Monday, December 12 at
7:30 pm at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Our speaker will be Professor Ian Owens, Executive Director of the Cornell Lab
of Ornithology. All are invited to join us as he presents,"The Revolution is
Here: Technology and the Future of Bird Watching and Citizen Science

Birds play a unique role in our understanding of how the planet works because,
through the efforts of bird watchers and citizen scientists, we know more about
large-scale patterns of occurrence, abundance, movement and population trends
in birds than any other comparable group. Professor Owens will explore how new
technologies promise to further accelerate the opportunities for birdwatchers
and citizen scientists to make a difference, making it possible to gather even
more useful data to inform conservation efforts, and engage even more people in
natural history and conservation. Starting by highlighting the power of
applying artificial intelligence models to large-scale databases of
‘unstructured’ observations, and what this reveals about long-term population
trends at a continental scale. He will then look at how automatic-recognition
of songs and calls is already changing how we find and identify birds, and the
impact of this ‘bioacoustic revolution’ on birding, monitoring and public
engagement. Finally, he will review how new technologies is empowering bird
watchers and citizen scientist communities around the world, and how to address
the challenges that exist in making these new technologies available at a
global scale.

About the Speaker: Professor Ian Owens, Executive Director of the Cornell Lab
of Ornithology, is an ornithologist interested in the ecology, evolution and
conservation of birds, and using the power of birds to engage the public with
big questions in science and global sustainability. The central question of his
research is, what are the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms that drive
biological diversification? He tackles this question at both macro- and
microevolutionary scales using a combination of field experiments, genetic
analyses and phylogenetic and spatial analyses. Almost all of his work is based
on birds because of the unrivaled depth of information on the ecology,
behavior, systematics and geographical distribution of bird species, and the
ability to manipulate genetic pedigrees, observe behavior and monitor
individual reproduction and mortality in free-living bird populations.

In-person meetings at the Lab of Ornithology start with cookies at 7:00pm and
club business at 7:30pm, followed by the speaker's presentation which ends by
9:00pm. We will attempt to make presentations available virtually, either as a
recording posted a few days later.

There will be a speaker dinner before the meeting with Professor Owens at 5:30
at Sumo restaurant on Triphammer Road. Please rsvp as soon as possible to
cl...@juno.com since reservations may be limited.

Enjoy this week and any birding opportunities it may bring.

[cayugabirds-l] Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Montezuma Snow Geese confirmed

2022-03-28 Thread Laura Stenzler
Here is information from Dr. Jarra Jagne of the Avian Health Program at the
Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University.

On 3/18/22, the Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell received
notification of illness and death in mostly juvenile snow geese and other wild
waterfowl at the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge in Seneca County, NY. Six birds
consisting of four snow geese, one ring-necked duck and an unspecified duck
were submitted by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)
for preliminary testing. On March 28, 2022, The New York State Department of
Agriculture and Markets, received notice from USDA Wildlife Services
confirming highly pathogenic Eurasian H5 Avian Influenza (Avian Flu) in five
of the birds except the ring-necked duck. The preliminary findings were
confirmed by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) at
the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL).

On the day we had 81 species, which was low. We made up some lost ground in the

The total for the week is now 94, which is only 4 below the 10-year average.

Hi everyone,

The conditions are really nice on the lake today with calm water, little wind,
and warm sun to view a number of different species of ducks. From Hog Hole a
large Aythya raft is viewable (bring your scope), with many hundred redhead,
greater and lesser scaup, ring-necked ducks, common and hooded mergansers,
coots, mallards, black duck, bufflehead, two pintail drakes, and one
canvasback. There's also a continuing blue-headed vireo that was quite out in
the open in the boxelders on the west edge of the Hog Hole woods seen along the
path ( 42.6098, -76.5187). All in all, it makes for rather nice birding.

 Cheers,

[cayugabirds-l] Ithaca Area IV Xmas bird count challenge

2021-12-19 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all,
I am writing to ask if you would be interested in counting birds for the Jan
1 Ithaca area Audubon Christmas Bird Count, which is coordinated by the Cayuga
Bird Club. Specifically, there is a challenging route that John Fitzpatrick
has covered for the past 20 years, which he cannot cover this year. He has
been asking around and has written up the following detailed description of the
route, which is in Area IV in the town of Dryden. It follows Cascadilla Creek
as it parallels Thomas Road, between Rte 79 and Ellis Hollow Creek Road.

Here is Fitz's description:
"For a couple decades I’ve been doing a really fun, productive, largely walking
route on the Ithaca CBC every January 1. Now that I’ve joined the migratory
flocks, I’ll be doing a CBC in Florida on that same day instead, for the second
year in a row. Last year Eliot Miller did the route, but he’s tied up this year
on New Year’s Day and can’t participate. I’m worried that this route will go
begging. Warning, it’s pretty “physical.”

Basically, it’s a walk from Caroline School area up the headwater riffles of
6-mile Creek, through those marshes and beaver ponds near the divide (below the
Thomas Rd. B&B) and continuing down the first several miles of Cascadilla
Creek. I typically get all the way down to Genung Road, then break off and do a
couple other things (see below) before dark. Not coincidentally, my house is
about a mile upstream from Genung Rd., and I get there right around noon for
lunch and working the bird feeders, scanning for hawks over the valley, etc.

This route provides the Ithaca CBC most (occasionally all) of its Song Sparrows
(I aim for >30) and often its only Swamp Sparrows (I aim for 5). It has also
provided its share of “bonus” birds, including Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Gray
Catbird, Hermit Thrush, Field Sparrow (one year I had 3), Snow Bunting (fields
by Caroline School), plus “rare but regular” spp. such as E Bluebird, Ruffed
Grouse, Winter Wren, N Flicker, etc. All three owls are on the route, and one
year I had an unexpected Long-eared Owl calling its low hoot above Thomas Road
just before dawn while trolling for Screech Owls."

IF you think you might be up for this, or know anyone else who might be, please
let me know! This falls in "area IV" of the count circle, and I am the
coordinator for this area. Also, I am sure Fitz would be more than happy to
answer any questions.

Here is a link to the Cayuga Bird Club's webpage describing the count.
https://www.cayugabirdclub.org/resources/christmas-bird-count
And here is a link to an interactive map of the count circle. You can zoom in
to Thomas Road and see the path of Cascadilla Creek.

Let me know if you have any questions, or any suggestions for others who may be
able to do this if you cannot. Thanks,
Laura

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Meeting - TONIGHT! 7:30

2021-11-08 Thread Laura Stenzler
Listening to Nature’s Divas: what female songsters have to tell us
Speaker: Dr. Karan Odom

Monday, November 8, 2021, 7:30pm EDT
Free and open to the public!
Register for this Zoom Webinar at: https://tinyurl.com/cbc2021-11

(Or go to www.cayugabirdclub.org/webinars to register for the zoom link).

Most bird enthusiasts are familiar with the intricate, beautiful songs of male
songbirds. However, it is less well known that females of many bird species
also sing. While male songbirds sing to attract mates or defend territories,
the reasons that females sing can be much broader, including competing for
year-round resources for herself and her young. However, there is still a lot
to learn about the extent of differences between male and female songs, the
reasons that female songbirds sing, and the evolutionary pressures that led
female songbirds to sing in the first place. Dr. Karan Odom will provide a
glimpse of the world’s diversity of female bird songs and explain what these
natural divas have to tell us.

About the Speaker: Dr. Karan Odom is a behavioral ecologist interested in how
animals evolved their often complex behaviors. She is especially interested in
the evolution of elaborate bird songs in female as well as male songbirds. She
combines phylogenetic comparative methods with field studies in order to tease

Experts recommend taking down feeders until the source of the disease is
identified.

Reports of sick and dying birds with vision problems, eye swelling (often with
a crusty discharge), and neurological symptoms have been rippling across parts
of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States. This illness is different
from the conjunctivitis condition known as “finch eye disease,” but the exact
cause is currently unknown.

While many songbirds have been impacted, the illness seems to be most common in
juvenile Common Grackles, Blue Jays, European Starlings, and American Robins.

While the unknown disease affecting birds has not yet been reported in New
York, it has been reported in neighboring Pennsylvania. We are taking a cue
from wildlife agencies and suggesting the following five steps, for now:

1. Cease feeding birds and providing water in bird baths until this wildlife
mortality event has concluded. This may be infectious.
2. Remove all feeders and bird baths and clean with a 10% bleach solution.
3. Avoid handling dead or injured wild birds. Wear disposable gloves if it is
necessary to handle a bird.
4. Keep pets away from sick or dead birds as a standard precaution.
5. To dispose of dead birds, place them in a sealable plastic bag and discard
with household trash. This will prevent disease transmission to other birds and
wildlife.

Won’t it cause additional harm to remove birdfeeders that are familiar food
sources for backyard birds?
Many of you may have concerns about ensuring birds have access to familiar food
sources, including birdfeeders. We understand and want to provide a bit of
reassurance that the impacts of these temporary precautions will have minimal
impacts on the birds you love. Fortunately, it’s the summer breeding season and
most bird species are relying on caterpillars and other insects to feed their
young, natural food sources that are readily available in nature. Additionally,
birds are resilient and crafty creatures who will adapt to changes in food
supplies with relative ease, finding new opportunities when familiar options
are no longer available. We hope this issue is identified and resolved as soon
as possible and you can resume the use of feeders. In the meantime, for the
safety of the birds, we encourage everyone to work together and err on the side
of caution.

For NY specifically, residents should contact their Regional DEC Wildlife
office if they find any birds with eye lesions or exhibiting neurologic signs.

This morning at our feeders, in our flowerbeds, on our lawn is a flock of
perhaps 100 Redpolls! It's amazing! It's hard to get an accurate count because
they move around so much, and is probably conservative. AND, today is my
Project Feederwatch count day!

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese at the north end of Cayuga Lake

2021-03-10 Thread Laura Stenzler
Today (Wednesday), after spending the morning on our south facing deck watching
loads of Canada and snow geese fly over, Ton and I drove around Cayuga lake.
On the northwest side, at the south end of the ice (which is south of Cayuga
Lake State Park, where Lake Rd. rejoins 89) we found two huge flocks of snow
geese in the water and on the ice, as well as a really big mixed raft of
ducks. Mostly redheads, but also lots of scaup and smaller numbers of black
ducks, ring-necked ducks, wigeon, gadwall, pintails, canvasbacks, hooded
mergansers, red-breasted mergansers, bufflehead, mallards, swans, black-backed
gulls, a bald eagle (which got the snow geese up into the air)..it was
really amazing! We could pull off on Lake Road just before it rejoins 89 and
had great views - with and without a scope. They will probably be there
tomorrow as well. Highly recommended!

Would you like to learn more about birds and their lives? Consider taking the
Cayuga Bird Club?s Spring Ornithology with Steve Kress, held Tuesday evenings
March 30 to May 18 via Zoom. Even if you are a seasoned birder, your future
birding experiences will be enriched by this course, by exploring beyond
finding and identifying birds. Have a Tuesday night conflict? Classes are
recorded for viewing or reviewing at your convenience.

This course is perfectly timed to help people identify spring migrants and
better understand bird behavior. Each meeting features a group of migratory
birds that are at the peak of their spring migration, with discussions about
bird song, migration, courtship, family life, conservation, and how to create a
bird-friendly habitat on your own property.

Dr. Kress, well known for his entertaining and engaging teaching style,
illustrates each presentation with stunning photos and bird song recordings.
Although the course focuses on birds of the northeastern U.S, most of the
identification, behavior, and conservation tips are relevant to people
everywhere.

Dr. Kress served for many years as Director of the Audubon Seabird Restoration
Program and Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine, and has written numerous books,
articles, and online courses about birds and wildlife conservation. The course
fee is $125 per household. Details and registration at:
