[cayugabirds-l] Western tanager remains
I trekked to campus this afternoon, along with Rueben Stoltzfus and his family, to see the Western Tanager. We found it (life bird for Reuben) in the same location, moving from behind the yews to the alcove at the store entrance eating where someone had placed a handful of sunflower seeds on the ground near a wall of ivy. It is quite tolerant of people, and stayed in one location for a good five minutes or so, and provides excellent close views. At one point we were no more than a few feet away looking over the wall into the yews. We were able to make out some orange showing around the eyes, on the forehead, and around the beak. [cayugabirds-l] Yale farm road today
While searching for the snowy owls at 11:45 in the blowing snow today on Yale Farm Road (no luck) I was lucky to get really good views of 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS - a male and a female-- and a ROUGHLEGGED HAWK all hunting the same field east and south of Mcgrane. Several times they were all within my binocular view at the same time and easily seen with out the bins. It got even more interesting when a raven joined the party and started mobbing the female harrier for a short spell. New feeder addition: one tufted titmouse and several more red-winged blackbirds. [cayugabirds-l] Pheasants and other August birds
Some interesting sightings over the last couple of days-- seems like months since I have been birdwatching! After some absence, I hear white breasted nuthatches and a baltimore oriole singing in my front yard. I wonder have they been around but silent or have they been on the move and back again? I found a cedar waxwing sitting on a nest in a small maple tree, and both she and her mate have been very vocal. On Wycoff road I flushed from the side ditch a female ring-necked pheasant with at least 4 chicks. Our dozen Barn swallows are still here and feeding their second batch of fledglings. I have seen large gatherings of bank swallows on the telephone wires. Northern mockingbirds also feeding their second round. And thanks to everyone who posted about the Gallinule families at MNWR- I was finally able to add them on my life list. I did not expect them to be so beautiful. Be well and keep moving! Strange as it may seem (at least it does to me) we have been regularly hearing a black-billed cuckoo here in farm country. Just this evening we saw the elusive bird fly from the telephone wire into the willow and then I lost it in the maple tree. I figured it to be more of a woodland bird, but there it was surrounded by barns and uncut, wet hay fields. I am so happy to have finally seen it, thanks to my husband who noticed a bird whose tail was not flicking up and down like our resident mockingbird. [cayugabirds-l] SNOWY OWL interlaken
Around 4:00 I spotted a SNOWY OWL perched atop a telephone pole on Rt 96 between Powell Rd and Kellys Corners Road in Interlaken. By the time I drove to pick up a friend to see it and returned it was gone. These owls are sure making winter driving exciting and hazardous--You just never know where they will turn up! Along the way we had one beautiful MALE HARRIER hunting on Tunison road, one KESTREL, about a dozen HORNED LARKS. My drive ended with a very close encounter with a COOPERS HAWK in my backyard. He shot out in front of the truck, did a few aerial moves, circled back into the car port (flushing the sparrows in the dead bushy vines that I swear I could hear scream "watch out he's coming back") and then he was gone. This guy has been hanging around for a couple of days and it was fun to see him stirring things up a bit. Quite an exciting 1/2 hour on a cold winter day. Be well and keep moving! [cayugabirds-l] Short eared owl-ovid
At 3:25 this afternoon while sitting at the kitchen table, a movement outside caught my eye. It was a SHORT EARED OWL hunting in the pasture next to my house (hall road) on the south side. We got great views of it hunting (tho a little blurry thru my husbands bins since mine are on their way to nikon for repair- ugh!) . It would hover in one place four 4 or 5 seconds then either dive or move to another vantage point often sitting on a roadside fence post. We had great views from the second floor and watched until he flew west at around 3:40. I was just getting ready to go for a drive to look for owls and this one came to me! The ORCHARD ORIOLE (I assume the same one) that nested in our yard was back this morning singing loudly from a large maple. In May he was actively defending a nest then all went quiet. I've been seeing, very regularly, 3 short-eared owls on Wycoff Road in Ovid. This evening, however, there were 4. These owls are quite vocal and it is a real treat to see them and hear them. The owls rise up from behind the Beardsley farm on Rock River cross back and forth across Wycoff, often perching on a fence post.
