Happy New Year everyone!
It's worthwhile noting that Short-eared Owls seem rather abundant this year and
it may be beneficial scouting large fallow fields during evening Civil
Twilight—when the birds begin to forage.
January 1st, shortly after 5pm, there was a single foraging SHORT-EARED OWL
Reported in field below/west of Long Pt Winery, just off NY Rt 90, south of
Aurora. Yesterday 1/1/23.

Should have reported this earlier but on 10/23 at around 6:30pm I saw
a bird consistent with SHORT-EARED OWL on Townsendville Rd. near Fox

so I couldn't see coloration but it was the right size, lithe and
bulky. I think worth

At dusk I ended up well east of Aurora
We saw three, maybe four on Lake Road near the Long Point Winery this evening

This evening I went searching for SHORT-EARED OWLS in an area where I thought
had potentially good habitat. I did see one at sunset (which was awesome this
evening) in the field across from this address:

Interlaken. This is the same area where I frequently saw a

Never Stop
Walking back from the mailbox this morning, I had a Short-eared Owl fly low
across the field in front of me. It landed briefly in a hedgerow until chased
back up by crows. The crows proceeded to escort it higher and higher until it
finally disappeared into the overhanging clouds to the south.
Marshall Iliff, Ken Rosenberg, and I had a Short-eared Owl again this
evening over the field of tall switchgrass on Bluegrass Lane. This is the
first report from Bluegrass (that I know of) since Ken had a SEOW here last
Friday, but I don't know how many times it's been looked for since then.
Went to see the SE Owl show at Long Point Winery this evening. There were at
least six birds active. One had a run-in with a female Northern Harrier in the
air--perhaps a vole ownership dispute.
This was my second time seeing this particular show in my life and I recommend
it highly. The birds
We were surprised to see the shirt-eared owl hunting again but this time even
earlier--at 2:00 in the afternoon. Beautifully underlit from the snow against
the bright blue sky. Nice thanksgiving treat!

Based on intelligence I received from Mark Chao, I stopped by the DEC

sunset) but was
