Enjoyed watching a male yellow-bellied sapsucker work his way around some trees in our back woodlot in Danby this morning. FOY in my yard this morning- Magnolia Warbler, foraging in pear tree blossoms; Then, later, as I was searching on high for the singing foy-yard Scarlet Tanager, a foy-yard Black-billed Cuckoo ‘coo-coo-ed’ from opposite end of yard! It flew before I got on it; then I saw it zoom past again over RR track! Meanwhile, the now regular ‘feeder/singing’ birds Orioles (B) , Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, & Gray Catbirds abound. West Danby enjoyed a bright sunrise. There was hardly a cloud in the sky for a short period this morning. I had Fox Sparrows singing from all directions, a couple of Hermit Thrushes drinking or bathing or foraging at the pond outlet, Wood Ducks on the pond, a Brown Thrasher rummaging under the shrubs, c. 50 Juncos at the feeders, a lone Pine Siskin, a few Golden-crowned Kinglets, a Phoebe, etcetera. -Geo Tupper Road West Danby -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Even tho I have cut back on the volume of bird seeds provided, I still have interesting birds here. I have seen both female & male HUMMINGBIRDS at their feeder, as well as a DOWNY WOODPECKER mother feeding a baby at the bark butter log. Regular customers are the many A GOLDFINCHES eating nyjer seed. I think the WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCH is feeding a baby both suet & sunflower seeds. CATBIRDS enjoy suet too. Also saw 2 BLUE JAY babies w/short tails interacting with parent birds in tree outside my porch. BROWN THRASHERS active across road & a small hawk (Sharpie or Coopers) zoomed thru the yard after a bird that it missed catching. Most mornings I hear 1 or 2 OSPREYS chirping down near the water! Lotsa GRACKLES both in yard & on beach. Baby ducks include 6 COMMON MERGS & 4 MALLARDS. & I still hear the 2 WOOD THRUSHES singing in woods along w/ the occasional A. REDSTART! Hi Alll, This morning I was visited by two quite special, to me, yard birds. First a Brown Creeper appeared in a the tree near my feeders. it stayed in the yard for about 10 minutes. An hour or so later a Carolina Wren showed up. It only stayed for a minute or so and didn't visit the suet feeders which were in use by E. Starlings. I'm hopeful it will return soon. Have had some interesting birds at our feeders recently. We've had a CHIPPING SPARROW every day since Thursday. Yesterday a first-winter male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK stopped by briefly. This morning there was a juvenile male RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD feeding on the ground with the other birds. It disappeared when a COOPER'S HAWK flew in and took one of the mourning doves. It hasn't returned. Larry -- W. I made the most of being grounded today. When I went outside for gardening instructions, the first thing I heard was a vague warbler song from the mature spruce tree in the neighbors' yard. Forty-five minutes of procrastination yielded one second of view of a new bird for the cumulative yard list: a male CAPE MAY WARBLER, which was also new for this year for me in the Cayuga Lake Basin. Maybe I'll recognize its song now, though I still consider it vague. From time-to-time throughout the day I heard the singing again, and I stared at the tree for signs of movement. Five hours later (during which I was also somewhat productive) I was rewarded with an extended view of the bird. It crawls around the interior of the tree, neither at the very top, nor on the tips of branches, and it doesn't fly much or far, but it sure is beautiful. As a bonus in the meantime I also heard a SCARLET TANAGER singing from the trees atop the cliff across the street. After supper on the back porch, I suggested watching the spruce tree again in case the Cape May or some other warbler was still there. Laurie was only indoors briefly to get a jacket against the chill, but during that time, 7:30pm to be precise, a COMMON NIGHTHAWK flew over going somewhat erratically north east. It was high enough to be out of the shadow of West Hill, and it looked tan in the sunshine, with the white stripes near the wingtips easily visible through binoculars. --Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Reviewing records for my yard I realized that in early years I'd been lax about including dates, that this year I'd made far too little effort there, and that there were some good candidates missing altogether. Hi all, Today I worked with Ngampit in the garden a whole lot. Early morning, we had a Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak "chinking" away and a Blackpoll warbler, along with a group of Cedar waxwings which have spent most of the morning eating Yew berries (so hopefully they are cured of any cancer). Also an Eastern Wood Peewee had been calling incessantly whole day from one of my Norway Spruces! In between we went to farmer's Market for some lunch, where I saw an Osprey flying overhead and a Northern Mockingbird in the area. When the weather cleared I forgot to look up in the sky for the hawks as we were so engrossed with trimming plants and did not even check e-mails whole day until recently so missed any Broad-winged hawks that were flying overhead! [cayugabirds-l] Yard birds and Dryden
In my yard this morning after the heaviest rain ended, there was a flurry of activity. The highlight was two male Scarlet Tanagers and a juvenile being fed by one of the males, Other birds included Baltimore Oriole, Northern Flicker, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, American Robins, American Goldfinches, a bunch of Red-eyed Vireos, and more things I didn't know were there until all the birds suddenly flushed and flew off. I couldn't find what flushed them. This afternoon on the rail trail in Dryden from East Lake Rd to the lake, we found 3 Green Herons foraging in the open, 2 kingfishers, two female/juvenile Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Song Sparrows, and a large group of Cedar Waxwings flycatching. (There have been Green Herons foraging in the open on the pond in Sapsucker Woods this week too.) The lake itself, viewed from the south end, only held a group of Canada Geese. The water level of the little pool across the trail from the lake was too high for shorebirds. On Schutt Rd., a Common Raven flew up from a farm field. In the wetland along Rt. 38 between Keith Lane and the center of Dryden, we saw three Wood Ducks on a log. I was hoping the water level here might be low enough for shorebirds, but it's not. My neighborhood 'rain crows' - both Black-billed and Yellow-billed Cuckoos - have really been living up to their nickname! Along with all the rain, hailstones have rattled the roof for several days running. And they're likely to do it again today, if the Cuckoos are to be believed. It's amazing to sit under shelter and think of all the birds out in these storms, like the female Hooded Warbler sitting tight on on her knee-high nest, which now contains 4 little eggs of ivory wreathed in red, while all around her lightning flashes and the ground is pelted by hailstones as big as hickory nuts! -Geo Geo Kloppel Bowmaker & Restorer 227 Tupper Road Spencer NY 14883 607 564 7026 g...@cornell.edu geoklop...@gmail.com -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

My warbler list looks about the same as a couple of days ago, but there are certainly more TENNESSEE WARBLERS in the mix now! I met with half a dozen HOODED WARBLERS, including two females who flashed their white tail spots and gave warning notes from their skulking places in the low undergrowth. I came upon one flowering apple tree in which about eight INDIGO BUNTINGS (males and females together) were quietly foraging. There were lots of noisy Orioles about, and Black-billed Cuckoos called almost simultaneously from several directions. When I was wet enough I retreated. There are no Collegetown Bagel outlets here, but I'd found a couple of morels in the orchard, so when I got home I sauteed them in butter and put them between rye with just a thin slice of Lorraine cheese. [cayugabirds-l] Yard birds: Swainson's Thrush, S.Tanager, Magnolia Warbler
This evening, a Swainson's Thrush made a surprise appearance foraging on the ground outside our dining room window during dinner. On Friday a Scarlet Tanager showed up and added its song to that of our resident B.Orioles (two males) RBGrosbeaks (2 males +2 females) C.Yellowthroat, H.Wrens, Finches, etc. Have not seen YRumped warblers for a few days. Late afternoon yesterday a Magnolia Warbler was foraging behind the shed, giving us good looks. Nari -- Nari B. Just before sunset I added a MAGNOLIA WARBLER. Hoping for more warblers ahead, as many of the fruit trees are just now coming into flower. Expecting Cuckoos any day now! Might get one tonight for the price of going outside to listen (if only the toads would shut up! - their annual pool party has been roaring for days) -Geo On May 11, 2011, at 9:15 PM, Kenneth Victor Rosenberg wrote: Wow. Around my yard this morning: lots of gobbling tom Turkeys, Ruffed Grouse thumping from various directions, several Hermit Thrushes, numerous Ruby-crowned Kinglets, one Blue-headed Vireo, one Black and White Warbler, one Louisiana Waterthrush, several Field Sparrows, at least six Fox Sparrows (peaking here now!), numerous Eastern Towhees, a few Purple Finches... Several days ago all my feeder birds vanished for a few minutes while an immature Cooper's Hawk ambushed the deserted feeders. For five minutes I watched a pair (!) of Cowbirds attend very purposefully to the movements of the Phoebes nesting under my eaves. I thought this kind of scouting was just the responsibility of the female Cowbird, but apparently not. Maybe female scouting just looks irresistibly attractive to the male? A Red-bellied Woodpecker threesome made quite a commotion in the big maple tree over my porch. -Geo Geo Kloppel Bowmaker & Restorer 227 Tupper Road Spencer NY 14883 607 564 7026 g...@cornell.edu geoklop...@gmail.com -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Yard Birds: Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, Ruffed Grouse
I have had some fun new yard birds this week. About a half an hour ago, I heard a Louisianna Waterthrush in the creek across the road. I believe I heard it a few days ago as well, but was able to hear it better and confirm it this morning. There has also been a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker drumming in the woods in my back yard for the past 4 days. I have seen a Ruffed Grouse on two occasions and just heard it again this morning. On Saturday, Susie & I had brief yard visits from our first-of-year YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and NORTHERN SHRIKE. The latter was a bit surprising as I had thought they had all gone north.
