Yes, that’s a yearling male, one hatched in 2020. They molt out of the
female-looking plumage in body feathers, but they keep their juvenal primaries,
which are more brown than black.

[cayugabirds-l] Rose-breasted grosbeak/indigo bunting behavior

2018-05-16 Thread Michele Emerick Brown
I live in Caroline. A friend was helping me with some gardening a few days ago
and she observed what appeared to be an altercation between a rose-breasted
grosbeak and an indigo bunting near some lilacs. Then, we found what looks to
be a dead female indigo bunting on the ground.

Any ideas about what might have been going on? Would they be competing for
territory? I'm guessing the death occurred from a window strike.

Thanks,
Michele

I really like hearing what birds have arrived so I can start watching for them.
I figure that in about a week, it might show up in Auburn. Thanks for the
notice.

2017-04-03 Thread Asher Hockett
Hi Matt,

Yes, I think that is very likely, and I probably mis-id'ed this bird. I did
not note the bold markings typical of the female R-b Grosbeak. In my haste
to pin it down I eliminated the House FInch and completely lapsed on the
Purple Finch.

2017-04-02 Thread Matthew Medler
Asher,
Is there any chance that the bird you saw this morning might have been a
similar-looking female Purple Finch? Purple Finch is a classic early April
migrant here in the Ithaca area, whereas Rose-breasted Grosbeaks typically
arrive back here in late April or early May. This eBird map for Rose-breasted
Grosbeak for Mar-Apr 2017 shows that the vast majority of records are from
Central America:
http://ebird.org/ebird/map/robgro?neg=true=-141.8379045924362=8.949898346376457=-29.33790459243619=52.11981561533453=true=true=Z=3-5=3=5=cur=2017=2017

Here's the corresponding Purple Finch map:

2017-04-02 Thread Geo Kloppel
That's right: Miller Creek joins Michigan Creek 1/2 mile south of the Spencer
Lake dam. The combined waters are afterwards named Catatonk Creek on USGS maps.
It flows south and east, gathering other waters, until it joins with Owego
Creek and empties into the Susquehanna.

Very cool bird! As far as I can tell, Miller Creek drains south, and South

[cayugabirds-l] Rose-breasted Grosbeak

2015-05-01 Thread Geo Kloppel
I've been working with the door open this afternoon, hoping that some of my
missing migrants would reveal themselves. I was just preparing a hank of
chestnut bow hair (crin bronze marron clair) to go on a baroque bass bow of
snakewood (Piratinera guianensis), when a Rose-breasted Grosbeak (Pheucticus
ludovicianus) began singing. As I type this, the bird has moved over to the
feeder, like a native returned.

[cayugabirds-l] Rose-breasted Grosbeak, etc

2015-04-30 Thread Dave Nutter
I had time for a brief walk in Cass Park and along the railroad grade behind it
(is it officially the Black Diamond Trail yet?) and met another part of the
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK wave, first heard singing, then a male seen. Also a
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH sang a couple times from a wetland, and BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHERS chased and wheezed in the treetops.

Yesterday as I was driving up Gun Shop Hill (Lake St, Ithaca) and reflexively
checking out the top of the smokestack. I saw a black bird about Red-winged
Blackbird sized but lacking epaulettes flying up to perch on one of the
antenna-like metal lightning rods or ineffective bird deterrents, and then I
glimpsed white on the belly. If I hadn't had a taxi customer in the car I would
have stopped and used binoculars to confirm. As it is I think it was an Eastern
Kingbird, but that I shouldn't count it because the view was too brief,
distant, and awkward. I returned within a few minutes but it was gone.

Yesterday's (4/29) new basin birds of which I'm aware were
NASHVILLE WARBLER by Steve Kelling at the Lab of O, Sapsucker Woods, Lansing
PRAIRIE WARBLER by Steve Fast at Baldwin Tract of Park Preserve, Dryden

Today so far I've heard reports of new:
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER by Jeff Gerbracht at his place in Caroline
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER by Mark Chao et al in Sapsucker Woods, Dryden
OVENBIRD by Geo Kloppel at Lindsay-Parsons, Newfield/Danby
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK by Mark Chao at Sapsucker Woods Lansing/Dryden;
Stephanie Greenwood at Eco-Village, Ithaca; myself at Cass Park, Ithaca

Enough email, back to reality.

[cayugabirds-l] Rose-breasted Grosbeak

2011-05-01 Thread Nari Mistry

This morning the first male Rose-breasted Grosbeak appeared at our feeders.
Looking at some past records, I noted that last year on 5/2/10, there
was a crowd of SEVEN male RBGrosbeaks feeding peacefully at our feeders!
We have usually had two pairs breeding in our yard or somewhere close,
although at the feeders they never quarrel.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, Brooktondale

2011-04-24 Thread Dave Nutter
There are a lot of great birds in Shindagin Hollow, but it's outside the Cayuga Lake Basin, so I'm still seeking a 2011 first basin record for Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Of course I'm also interested in any neat bird observations in the region!--Dave NutterOn Apr 24, 2011, at 05:47 AM, Melissa Groo melg...@hotmail.com wrote:
