[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owls on west side of Cayuga Lake

The Snowy Owl seen at the Finger Lakes Regional airport was still there today.  
I saw it about 2:30 pm.   There is second owl, which I got a better view of 
south of the airport near the corner of Seybolt and Reese Roads.   I reported 
both owls on eBird with digiscoped photos using my phone.

second Owl being harassed by crows on Hoster Rd just South of Martin. It was 
chased South.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owls in Varick/Romulus

Yale Farm Rd. in Varick/Romulus (east of junction with Rt. 96a)
continues to be a good bet for SNOWY OWLS. On Monday around sunset,
the heavy streaked owl was in the middle of the farm field east of the
McGrane Rd. intersection (google tells me this is in Romulus). Being
so dark overall, the bird was quite conspicuous on the snow (it even
appears to be wearing a wool cap!).

This morning around 8am, an almost all-white individual was on a power
line right on Yale Farm Rd. about 1/4 mile east of 96a.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owls, Meadowlarks in Seneca County.

Had a pair of Snowy Owls along Rte 96A between Woodworth & Kime Rds. They were 
hanging out together, female(?) was much more heavily barred than male(?). Also 
found 3 E. Meadowlarks along Stacy Rd. (off 96A by Kime/Yellow Tavern Rd 
intersection). Seneca Lake St Park was almost void of geese - no Snows, very 
few Canada (most of those were leaving by 8 AM). Lots of ducks, Hooded Mer., 
Common Mer., C. Goldeneye, Bufflehead, RN Ducks, Redhead, Lesser Scaup, A. 
Wigeon, etc.

other on a gas well, very white bird, at 96A and Woodworth.

The Snowy Owl on Indian Field road is still present as of right now. It is
out in the corn field on the west side of the road just south of the second
group of barns north of 90. Groups of Horned Larks with Snow Buntings and
longspurs along the road to the north as well.

Go on NY Rt. 366 to the center of Freeville where NY Rt. 366 ends at the 
intersection with NY Rt. 38.
Stop. Go straight across on the continuation of the road that was Rt. 366 
towards McLean.

in no more than a mile, the next crossroad past that Rt. 38 intersection is 
where we all saw the F'ville Snowy Owl recently. that is the Cornell Vegetable 
Crops farm, both sides of road, past the intersection there.

I turned left and went just past the muted green-colored barn (rather new 
construction). The owl was out in the field to the right, near two orange posts 
the day I saw it.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owls?

Hi, I have friends visiting today. Where should I take them to hopefully
find a Snowy to see? Are they still present at Hancock? The Freeville Owl
location confuses me...there are Cornell barns on 366, also in Dryden. I
dont know of any in Freeville. Can anyone give a street crossing that would

[cayugabirds-l] snowy owls- Indian Field Rd-1 & Potato building-2 more

3 snowy owls today:

1 on Indian Field Road at the intersection with Poplar Ridge-many thanks to 
Anne Marie and Tim Johnson for the scope, along with Meena.  I don't think I 
would have found the owl tucked into the grasses without their help.

After the Indian Field snowy I had all good intentions of going home but the 
car has a mind of it's own and I headed to the Potato building.
One snowy on a pole to the west side of the building at 4:15.  That one stayed 
put and as I left going east I saw another snowy to the east of the building at 
4:50.

Well worth the extra drive.

Large flock of approximately 200 snow buntings behind the potato building and 8 
horned larks to the south.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owls & other raptors around Montezuma

3 Snowy Owls are in the fields near the potato barn on the south side of Rte 
31. Also found a single owl on a fence post in a pasture 2.0 miles south of 
Waterloo on the west side of Rte 96 (north side of the Aunkst Rd intersection - 
Peter Whitmer farm turn) (watch out for the electric fence!)

 

Montezuma drive offered up at least 10 eagles (2 mature), several Red -tailed & 
Rough-legged Hawks, Canada Geese, Ring-necked Ducks, & a few Mallards & Black 
Ducks. Several Hooded Mergansers are also around the area. Tundra Swans are 
also all around.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owls still around Montezuma

I found the lone Snowy about 3:45 p.m. right where Gary saw it, confirmed 
by Kathy Strickland & my daughter, Becky. I saw it first from the first 
driveway to the dike next to the muck on the east end. I drove to the potato 
bldg. where we still saw it but lighting was poor & it was too far away to 
see well. We saw the sandhills, well camo'd unless they flew, as they did 
several times. Swans were a delight. Lots of hunters everywhere. Lots of 
waterfowl, too, as Gary has mentioned. No snow geese.


At Knox-Marcellus we had a rough-leg hawk hovering right out in front of us. 
Never had such a close, clear view with the back-lighting giving us bold 
coloring as it faced us.


Brush-hog crew has cut most of the brush & trees along River (?) Rd. between 
the curve & Mud Lock. We saw both adult bald eagles in a tree north of the 
nest tree. They were still there when we came back through 2 hrs. later. 
Much better viewing with the trees gone along the lake side. Saw hooded 
mergs at the lock & more down the river swimming alongside a big tree that 
was floating northward!


At Kathy's we saw a couple brilliantly colored, male bluebirds & on West 
Genesee, west of Half Acre, saw lots of robins.

I went up the lake today as I missed the Snowy Owl cocktail party 
Friday afternoon in the mucklands, but held out hope they would still be there. 
After much scanning I did find one Snowy Owl sitting in the corn at the far 
north side of the fields about center. It was partially hidden and hard to see 
so it's possible others were still there although I couldn't find another one. 
With constant shooting most of the waterfowl were bunched up at the east and 
west sides of the fields. I could see nine Sandhill Cranes, but again they were 
partially hidden in the grass and tough to see. I didn't find any unusual Gulls 
or Geese. The Tundra Swan and Mallard numbers very were impressive. 
Scanning the fields north to Carncross Rd. didn't produce any Snowy 
Owls until my last stop at Morgan Rd. where I was hoping to see Short-eared 
Owls. There was a young Northern Harrier hunting the fields, a few Gulls, 
Canadas, one Tundra Swan and Hooded Mergansers. Just before dusk another white 
bird flew in that I thought was a Herring Gull, but the flight didn't look 
right and as I picked it up in my scope it transformed into a Snowy Owl. She 
landed on a grass hummock to wait until dark to hunt. It's possible this one 
was one of the mucklands 4. I never did see any Short-eared Owls.

While perusing USA Today in Wegman's Cafe, I read a brief article about a
surprising abundance of eight Snowy Owls counted in Kansas.  The phenomenon
was linked to a normal, cyclical low in the number of arctic rodents,
driving the owls south.  If so, perhaps we too shall be lucky.
