  John just called from Montezuma to say that he watched a Hudsonian
Godwit land in the pool that is just inside the entrance.  Several other
cars have stopped to see it, too.

[cayugabirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit

There was a Hudsonian Godwit seen today by a few people and missed by many more 
of us at La Salle's Landing Park after it was apparently flushed by a Peregrine 
Falcon. Up to three hours of searching for it by some failed to re-locate it. 
It was reported to have an injured leg so may still be around. And there were 
several other newly arrived godwits today elsewhere in the state, so they are 
apparently on the move. So head to your favorite shorebird site this weekend, 
and hope to get lucky!

yesterday, early afternoon. Good looks from the balcony. About 15 minutes after 
being first seen it took off and flew NNE until we lost sight of it. It 
appeared to be heading towards K-M. We checked there an hour later and were 
unable to spot it. 
The visitor’s center pool held an ever-changing set of shorebirds: Long-billed 
Dowitchers, Stilt Sandpiper, and Dunlin.

[cayugabirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit at Eaton Marsh on Saturday

I had a good trip up to Montezuma yesterday, and got to see the Hudsonian
Godwit for a couple of minutes at about noon before it took off flying to
the north.

The bird was at the beginning of Eaton Marsh on Wildlife Drive, and I took
a few photos of it before it flew.  Because this is only my second
Hudsonian Godwit ever, I was feeling rather insecure about the ID; I
realize how much more fun it is to have Ken (my husband and usual birding
partner) along for joint confirmation and celebration of new birds.  Alas,
he is out of town and missed this bird.
The long, upturned, bicolored bill of the godwit was very distinctive, and
when the bird flew it had a striking white stripe across the tail. It
looked to be a Juvenile Hudsonian Godwit, when I compare to Sibley's
illustrations. I later shared the photo with Jay who confirmed the ID,
making me feel much more confident about posting about it here. I included
two photos of the godwit with my ebird list for Wildlife Drive yesterday.

I had stopped earlier at East Road to look out on Knox-Marcellus after
receiving Jay's RBA about a Hudsonian Godwit there.  But the few shorebirds
were so distant from that vantage point, that I headed over to Wildlife
Drive.  However, Gary K stayed at East Rd and texted that he had found the
Hudsonian Godwit at Knox-Marcellus-- about 20 minutes before I came upon
the one at Wildlife Drive. Two birds?

There were Black-bellied Plovers both at the visitor's center and at Eaton
Marsh.  I was also pleased to see a greater variety of ducks along Wildlife
Drive.  Where we had seen only Wood Ducks on the left side of the drive
last week, yesterday there were Gadwall, American Wigeon and one Pintail.

On my way up to Montezuma, I stopped at Myers Point.  There the most
surprising bird was a female RING-NECKED PHEASANT, on the gravel shore with
the Gulls!  This was on the curved portion of the shore.  The pheasant saw
me moving for my camera and ducked out of sight. A few minutes later I went
near the flagpole for a different angle on the cove area, but I did not see
the pheasant again.

It was a good day to be out birding!

Here are a few more details of my fine morning at Montezuma -- surprisingly 
cool and clear during the time I was there (until 11 AM).

On the drive up in the early morning I stopped to listen for Jay's GRASSHOPPER 
SPARROW on Rt. 90 near Lake Rd., having missed them at several stops nearby 
last weekend. I was rewarded by 2 singing GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS (one very close 
to the road, one further back) exactly where Jay described -- then a third one 
singing in the large field just to the north of Lake Rd. on the west side of 
Rt. 90. Lots of good habitat around there.

As I entered Montezuma Refuge at 6:30, I was greeted by a calling VIRGINIA RAIL 
at the beginning of the entrance rd. Along the Wildlife Drive, lots of song (I 
counted 14 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 3 CERULEAN WARBLERS, 1 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO on 
the drive), and a few shorebirds at the Flats including LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and SANDPIPERS. The highlight, though, was the only 
shorebird at Benning Marsh -- a beautiful male HUDSONIAN GODWIT, which fed, 
preened, and slept fairly close to the road.

While I was watching the godwit a commotion of Red-winged Blackbirds across the 
road alerted me to 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS, which flushed from the marsh like brown 
owls and flew off across the Main Pool.

At Puddler's Marsh on Towpath Rd., the shorebird habitat was excellent and 
birds were much closer than last weekend. Among the closest birds were 2 
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, many DUNLIN and SEMIPALMATED 
SANDPIPERS, and 2-3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. Further out were many more DUNLIN, 
SEMI-SANDPIPERS, LEAST SANDPIPERS, 1 male WILSON'S PHALAROPE, 1 PECTORAL 
SANDPIPER, a few more WHITE-RUMPS,  and a few SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and both 
YELLOWLEGS. 12 species of shorebirds for the morning.

Also heard 2 more CERULEAN WARBLERS and a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO along Towpath. 3 
TRUMPETER SWANS very close, lots of calling COMMON GALLINULE, MARSH WRENS, and 
SWAMP SPARROWS.


An EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE is singing in my backyard at 7:45 PM -- a new migrant for 
the year.

A beautiful female HUDSONIAN GODWIT is foraging out with Dunlin and
Black-bellied Plovers at Puddlers Marsh from Towpath Road. Also WILSON'S
PHALAROPE and 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS at Shorebird Flats on the Wildlife
Drive.

[cayugabirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit with a very straight bill

Among the snipe, pipits and many shorebirds at Montezuma yesterday was a godwit 
in
adult winter plumage. We had excellent looks and took a raft of photos that we 
can
share with anyone interested. We had an ID problem with this bird as the bill
appeared absolutely straight much as one would see on a Black-tailed Godwit 
(limosa
limosa).

The bi-color bill pattern was closer to Hudsonian (darker). While the bird was 
very
actively moving and feeding, it took an age for it to show its underwing. At 
that
point we went with Hudsonian due the narrow wingstipe on dark wing. The upper 
tail
coverts were closer to the notch present on a Black-tailed and the bird seemed
overall larger than expected but the two are only a bit different in size.
Interesting drill but made for bleary eyes.

Does anyone know if the two have interbred?

Sorry Chris, not a single swallow at MNWR yesterday.

[cayugabirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit

This morning 8:30 the Godwit was feeding close to the Visitors Center. I was 
able to watch it from the balcony after two other birders saw it from the 
Observation Tower. It was still there when I left around 9. For a double treat 
I watched a Red-headed Woodpecker in the swampy area before you get to the pond 
on the path from South Spring Pool. The lighting was perfect it was perched on 
the side of a snag. The all  red head caught my attention and then I saw the 
rest of it. It was close enough to ID without binocs. I watched it for a few 
minutes before it flew off showing the white rump and secondaries. Janet Akin

departed at 13:15 with the bird feeding about 50 m to the south. Very nice.

[cayugabirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit present Sunday AM - Montezuma NWR

For a morning update - the godwit is still present at the Montezuma
NWR visitor center as of 7:24, reported by Gary Kohlenberg.  Last
night a Wilson's Phalarope dropped in next to the godwit briefly
before both birds took off.  It sounds like at least the godwit came
back; perhaps the phalarope is also still in the area.

This morning, 7:15, Ann Mitchell and I were at Montezuma to finally find the 
Hudsonian Godwit in the same area as has been reported. Unfortunately for Dave 
and Susan it also was able to pull the disappearing act that frustrated Susan 
and I twice yesterday. The torrential rain made for damp viewing but we were 
rewarded with stellar views eventually.

We also saw two Terns flying resolutely north from Frontenac Park in Union 
Springs. The great distance, western shore,  made it to difficult to call as to 
what species. I thought Common Tern and when Chris Wood and Jessie Berry said 
they just observed two Commons at Miliken Station it seemed to fit the bill.
