[Chat] Dentist recommendations

2019-07-13 Thread Lauren Redmond
Hi, neighbors!

We have a new health plan with EHP and a new dental plan with Delta Dental
through JHU. Can anyone else who uses those plans recommend a pediatrician,
adult primary, and a dentist in the area for our whole family? My kids are
13 and 10 so we aren’t needing specifically a pediatric dentist. I have
looked at the list of names on the websites, but would prefer to have some
specific recommendations.

Thanks for your help,
Lauren Redmond

[Chat] furniture for sale

2019-07-03 Thread Lauren Redmond
Hi, neighbors.

We have a bunch of furniture and stuff for sale.

Check out our Craigslist ads and be in touch.
We’d love to sell by tomorrow, ideally. Some price flexibility on certain
items. Some have already been lowered. Discounts for multiple items.

If transporting it is a problem, we may be able to assist with that for a
small fee depending on distance and timing.

Reply to this email instead of through the CL ad. Please send a response to
me directly and not to the whole listserve. It may default that way.

[Chat] Looking to buy furniture

2019-06-26 Thread Lauren Redmond
Hi, neighbors.

We are looking to buy furniture as we are making some room changes. I have
been doing a lot of looking on CL and FB marketplace, but I figure it might
be fruitful to put it out to this community, which would mean that we don’t
have to travel very far to pick things up. Perhaps some of you might have
things that you haven’t even listed, but you are ready to get rid of, or
know someone who is.

We are looking for:

- a twin bed frame (just a plain frame, we have a headboard)
-a twin boxspring
- a trundle frame
-a trundle mattress
- a full bed frame (again, just a plain frame because we have a headboard
and food board to attach)
-full size boxspring & mattress in good/excellent condition from a
non-smoking home.
-solid wood bookshelf (less than 44” wide with adjustable shelves
- 2nd solid wood bookshelf
-solid wood desk for adolescent (maybe painted white)
- solid wood dresser for adolescent (maybe painted white). Interested in
more of a low wide dresser than a tall narrow one.
-secondarily, but interested: solid color sectional sofa (not pleather or
leather) in very good condition from a smoke-free home and no pet damage.
Large will fit.

Thanks!

[Chat] Air mattresses

2019-05-31 Thread Lauren Redmond
Hi, neighbors.

We have family coming to visit next weekend into next week (6/6-6/12) and
we need two full or queen size air mattresses. Our pumps aren’t working
anymore and at least one of the pumps is not replaceable. Before we buy
new, I am wondering if anyone had any that we could borrow for the week.
They are for adult use so we prefer that it be a little thicker than the
ones that are only a couple of inches. They might both have 2 people
sleeping on each of them. I am happy to test myself if you are not sure how
well it/they are working anymore. I’d be happy to buy them as well if they
are working well.

Thanks for considering.

[Chat] Confectionary tools

2016-02-12 Thread Lauren Redmond
Hi, helpful neighbors!

It always is amazing how helpful and resourceful this group is for any
request I have made so I figure I would try again to see if you can fill
our need.

My nearly 10yo son has been in a confectionary after-school club (cool,
huh?!) and has a cake decorating contest this Saturday. Unfortunately, he
can't find his tools, which is a crazy mystery and very bad timing. Does
anyone have a icing piping bag and tips, and maybe even rolling cutters
(for fondant), that we can borrow until this weekend? They will be washed
and returned in the same condition. If someone wants to sell theirs that
goes unused, we would love that as well.

Thanks for considering.

To: charles-village-pare...@googlegroups.com

Hi All,

This sweet kitty, who we've affectionately nicknames Ms. Gray, has been
living underneath our porch on E. 31st street for over two months now. She
has a collar with a bell and is one of the sweetest kitties you will ever
meet. Her owner apparently got sick and no longer lives in her old place,
effectively abandoning her. My roommates and I, as well as several
neighbors, have been helping to make sure she's fed and has water, but she
deserves a real home and a family. We are looking into no-kill shelters
but would love to find her someone in the neighborhood since many families
and individuals have met her while walking by over the last few months. If
you are interested in adopting her or know someone who may be, or have
tips/contacts at a no-kill shelter that has space to take her, please let
me know. We already have a few cats in our house and can't add any more
but want to make sure she finds somewhere.

Thanks,

Bethany

[Chat] Charles Village 5K Run and 1K Kids' Fun Run

2013-05-22 Thread Lauren Redmond
Did you know that one of the reasons we can keep the Charles Village Rec
league prices so affordable for families is the Charles Village Festival 5k
run? This run is coming up June 1, 2013 and we hope you, family and
friends can register. It is a great run around the Hopkins campus. Please
sign-up on-line ASAP and help get others to sign up as well.

http://www.charlesvillagefestival.com/5k-run-and-1k-kids-fun-run.html

If you are not a runner and would like to assist, we need:

1. Two- three people to take care of the water table at the run, which
means filling the paper cups and handing them to runners.

2. Two- three people to assist with the free, kids' 1K run. Basically we
need volunteers to help sign kids up and hand out medals at the end.
Sign-up starts at 8:45 and run is 9:15, so you would be done by 9:30.

If you can assist in either, email charlesvillage...@gmail.com

My best friend is a dental hygienist who has filled-in as needed in Dr.
Shepley's office, but she mostly works in a Bel Air office. She says that
Dr. Shepley is one of the most competent and conscientious dentists she has
worked with. She highly respects his practice and she has high standards
for who she will work with! He uses epoxy, if that is the main ingredient
of the white non-metallic fillings.

2012-01-06 Thread Lauren Redmond
My husband has had to deal with a few of these closet bump-outs. They
often do leak and cause mold issues if not addressed in a timely fashion,
as well as the heat/energy loss. He just insulated and resurfaced some
from the outside by using insulation board, plenty of foam insulation
around the edges, and caulk.

He has also removed and concrete blocked some which were rusted out boxes
and causing water problems. He then used the original trim and doors on
new cabinets he made in front of where they used to be (bump-ins). ;)
These should be very familiar to Maya. ;)

Hi all: In my never ending attempt to de-clutter my house, I need to get
 rid of the following items:

2 rubbermaid footlockers (great for storing offseason clothes). One of
them is missing one of two latches, but otherwise they are in excellent
 condition.
Fun paper, glitter and other art supplies kids might like
An Ikea lamp with a red slender shade and black base
A pair of glass door knobs without the stem (easy to find in hardware
 stores)
A box of used three ring binders
 Several jigsaw puzzles
Various necklaces (nothing is valuable, this is stuff I don't wear any
 more)

I will be home most of the weekend so let me know when you would be free to
pick up what you like. First come first served!

Where in the city is evacuated? Didn't most people just go outside,
realize that nothing much was going on, then go back inside? Dirt bikers
have been disrupting traffic in Baltimore for years, earthquake or no.

From what I am reading, the largest earthquake centered when this one was
centered was a 4.8 in 1875. This one was a 5.9, i.e. about 12 times as large
(the Richter scale is logarithmic based on common i.e. base 10 logarithms,
for anyone who wants to know how I made the calculation). So I take
seriously the advice that a bigger shock may occur later, although probably
that will not happen. Be prepared!

Residents asked to secure trash receptacles
To: lauren1redm...@gmail.com

Hi Lauren Redmond,

Advisory Message has been issued by the Baltimore City Department of Public
Works - Solid Waste.

Thursday February 24, 2011 3:39 PM EST

High Winds Expected Tomorrow - Baltimore Residents asked to secure trash
receptacles
Since a high wind watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through the
evening, Public Works Director Alfred H. Foxx has asked citizens to secure
their trash receptacles to prevent debris from being blown into streets,
alleys and yards. “Last Saturday, windy conditions led to trash and debris
being blown against fence lines, into median strips, across streets and
alleys, and throughout our parks. We are asking residents to secure their
trash receptacles and report any piles of trash bags on streets, at the ends
of alleys or on corners by calling those locations into 311.”

Winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are possible. These winds can
blow trash from loosely tied or ripped bags and create airborne hazards and
get into streams and eventually the harbor. Baltimore City law requires the
use of trashcans. Trash and recycling needs to be stored until the next
regularly scheduled collection day. Residents should make sure all loose
objects on their property are secured or brought inside.

This is a neighborhood restaurant on Greenmount and I have heard great
things about it. Unfortunately there is nothing on the menu for vegetarians
except for the house salad (highly unusual these days) so I will not be
going, but I thought some of you might be interested. You only have until
midnight to buy it.

with innovative interpretations of classic Southern dishes. The
stuffed shrimp starter places portly jumbo shrimp under the stronghold of
meaty crab and lemon-butter sauce ($11.95), and the low country catfish
fingers ($10.25) comprise cornmeal-dusted fish fried to crispy resistance,
ready for mealtime martyrdom. Stomachs will cease grumbling as they submit
to the chicken and waffle entree ($19.95), while sautéed spinach and jasmine
rice sing backup for the blackened Louisiana tilapia in a
salmon-and-shrimp-dotted cream sauce ($19.95).

Chef Jenkins developed Darker Than Blue as a space to enjoy Southern
specialties in a cool, casual setting without having to molecularly manifest
on the bayou by the power of frozen-juice-like concentration. Live music is
featured regularly to fill the ears and the soulful, brooding holes of the
heart. Call to make a reservation.

I have a peach tree. If I do not get to the peaches than the squirrels
will. One year I tried freezing them but it did not work out well. Even
if the markets buy local won't the fruit still sit in the warehouses?
 Thanks

You would need to freeze the fruit using something like liquid
nitrogen or a dry ice and ethanol before you store it in your home
freezer. Your home freezer doesn't freeze the fruit fast enough and
the cell membranes usually explode (which turns the fruit into a pile
of mush when you defrost it).

 Hi,

[Chat] (no subject)

2010-06-19 Thread Lauren Redmond

We love One World Cafe for brunch.

I stopped by Moxie's and found out that they have mostly all the same hair
cutters/stylists (if you can call them that) as they did when it was Tempachi.
Honestly, that is good for the stylists who kept their jobs with the change in
ownership, but it is also disappointing because my hair and Eric's hair has
been butchered every time we had gone there, and we don't require anything
fancy. Unfortunately, Eric kept trying it multiple times, but the results were
always the same---BAD. I really don't understand why it is so challenging for
people to cut a man's hair in an even, tapered when they do it all day long
every day. If anyone has a recommendation for a good barber/men's hair stylist
in the area (not too expensive), we would love to hear about one.

Thanks.

[Chat] Heart's Place

2010-03-13 Thread Lauren Redmond

Emil, thanks for the info about the fundraiser. I don't think that we will be
able to go at this late notice because of our 2 kids, but hopefully others on
this Chat listserve may be able to. I will definitely be giving what we can.

Greg et al, I don't know whether they did not respond because they are
overwhelmed with their financial problems right now, but I did contact someone
there in December and dropped off bags of toys left over from our Village
Parents Toy Swap. I had called two numbers-- the church number and then I
found the number for Heart's Place directly (410-235-9269) . I didn't hear
back from the church until weeks later, but I had gotten an immediate call back
from Heart's Place Shelter. They were very grateful to have something to give
to kids who were there during the holiday season. I hope that they are able to
make it over this financial hump and that the Charles Village community will be
able to contribute now and in the future.

2010-03-12 Thread Lauren Redmond

I just came across this article accidentally when I was doing a search for
something else. Did anyone know that Heart's Place was facing early closure
due to lack of funding? Does anyone know the latest on this? Heart's Place
Homeless Shelter is located in the basement of St. John's Church at 2640 St.
Paul St. Their closing would really be a travesty.

What is supposed to be the distinction between Charles Village Discussion
listserve and the Chat listserve? I find that I post things I that I want to
announce or discuss to both listserves and I have noticed that other people do
that same. That just means that I get the same topics in my e-mail box twice.
I don't think that this is the purpose of having two listserves so I wanted to
clarify for myself and others.

Thanks.

The 8th Annual Ric Pfeffer Lecture and Baltimore Tikkun Present
Medea Benjamin,
Cofounder of Code Pink and Global Exchange

Sunday, January 31st, 7-9 p.m.
2640 St. Paul Street, Baltimore

Medea Benjamin is a cofounder of both CODEPINK and the international human
rights organization Global Exchange. She has been a tireless advocate for
social justice for more than 20 years. Described as one of America’s most
committed -- and most effective -- fighters for human rights by N.Y. Newsday,
and called one of the high profile leaders of the peace movement by the
L.A.Times, Medea has distinguished herself as an eloquent and energetic figure
in the progressive movement. In June of 2005, she was one of 1,000 exemplary
women from 140 countries nominated to receive the Nobel Peace Prize
collectively. Since September 11, 2001, Medea has been working to promote a
U.S. foreign policy that would respect human rights and gain us allies instead
of contributing to violence and undermining our international reputation. She
has recently led human rights delegations to Gaza and at the time of her talk
will have just returned from an international peace march there.

Ric Pfeffer, in whose honor this lecture series was established, worked as a
lawyer with OSHA at the Department of Labor, where he made notable
contributions to worker safety. At the time of his retirement due to illness,
he was developing a standard that would have established a single universal
process for managing and monitoring worker health and safety in all of the
nation's workplaces—a project long supported by the labor movement.

The Ric Pfeffer Lecture is a program of Research Associates Foundation. To
make a tax deductible contribution to the Ric Pfeffer Lecture, send a check
payable to Research Associates Foundation and mail to Research Associates
Foundation, PO Box 26152, Baltimore, MD 21210-0052.

Baltimore Tikkun is committed to a just and durable peace in the Middle East
and has sponsored many films and speakers, participated in demonstrations, and
lobbied for an end to all US aid to Israel until settlements have been
dismantled in the occupied territories and a viable Palestinian state is
established.

J Street, the political arm of the pro-Israel, pro-peace movement, invites you
to the official launch of J Street Baltimore on Thursday, February 4, 7-9 PM at
Temple Oheb Shalom, 7310 Park Heights Avenue. The event is part of J Street's
new national grassroots field program, which will broaden and deepen the
presence of this movement in communities across the country.

J Street Baltimore integrates the local Brit Tzedek v'Shalom chapter, and draws
new supporters from J Street's substantial netroots base.

We seek to engage and mobilize Baltimoreans like you to advocate effectively
for American support for a negotiated, two-state solution to the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for true peace and security for Israel as a
democratic homeland for the Jewish people.

But we need your help and your participation.

The February 4 event will be a great opportunity to hear more about J Street,
meet other J Street supporters, and find out how you can get directly involved
in this extraordinary cause right here in Baltimore. In addition, J Street's
Executive Director, Jeremy Ben-Ami, will be appearing via live video feed to
simultaneous kick-off events all around the country. Refreshments will be
available, too.

We look forward to seeing you there. Please go here to RSVP.

normally have rear collection for their trash and recycling are asked to place
contianers in the front of their residences.
Director Scott explained that, Due to the heavy snowfall over the weekend,
alleys with snow and ice present unsafe conditions for our drivers. Until we
can safely resume rear collections, we are asking citizens to place their trash

[Chat] Alley cats

2009-12-10 Thread Lauren Redmond

Hi. There have been lots of interesting discussions about cats recently since
the dog attacked our neighbor Greg and his dog, Herschel. I am glad that both
of them are on the mend and have gotten some support from the city because of
the community's efforts.

Now on to other CV animalsCATS.

Our neighbor went to a workshop offered by Alley Cat Allies and this is the
info she reported:

Basically the way ACA works is that if you have a stray cat or a
colony, you schedule spay/neuter appointments with a vet ahead of time
(2 weeks-a month ahead to get into the $20 clinics). Then, starting several
days before the
appointment, you start putting out some food for the cat/cats you are
trying to catch, so they'll get used to you and come around your
yard/porch/wherever on a regular basis.

You need to get a trap ahead of time (big wire cage with a trip
plate), which you either buy at Ace or somewhere like that, or you can
try to borrow one, which you may be able to get by getting in touch
with someone from Alley Cat Allies. I think they're a bit big and
expensive to buy if you're not planning on using it a lot.

So, you put out the normal plate of food inside the trap the day
before you have the vet appt. and hopefully, the cat will come by, go
for the food, and the trap door will snap shut behind them. They'll
probably freak out, so the woman who was giving the talk said to bring
the trap inside your house (a bathroom may be a good idea), put
newspaper under the trap, and cover it with a towel (this calms the cat
down I believe). The next day, you take them to the vet for the
appointment, and then, the important thing is to keep them inside
somewhere warm the night afterward because anesthesia keeps them from
properly regulating their body temps. The next day, take 'em outside,
open the hatch, and you're all done.

I just looked on the Alley Cat Allies website, I found this helpful info:
What is Targeted Trapping?Targeted
trapping is a method of trapping, spaying or neutering, and vaccinating
an entire colony at a time before moving on to the next surrounding
colonies in a specific geographic location. Newcomers entering
completed colonies are immediately trapped, spayed or neutered, and
vaccinated.
Conducting Trap-Neuter-Return
indiscriminately by spaying and neutering only a few cats in a colony
and then moving on to another colony has limited effects. It certainly
helps those individual cats, but does not address the overall goal of
helping all of the identified members of a colony and preventing new
litters of kittens in that colony. Cats who are not trapped and vetted
will continue to breed and exhibit behaviors such as yowling, spraying,
and roaming for mates.
Targeted trapping brings
about total positive results. When caregivers employ targeted trapping,
they work “smarter, not harder.” This focused process improves the
lives of all cats in the colony.

For more info, see: http://www.alleycat.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=285

Do you all find that there are enough alley cats in the neighborhood that this
would be a good idea to control their breeding? It seems like this would be a
good time of year to spay and neuter the cats since March - September is often
breeding season.

Is anyone interested in leading or participating in a targeted trapping
initiative in Charles Village?

attack and the on-lookers who incited the incident. I am willing to offer any
assistance that may be necessary to alleviate this situation. I understand that
the Northern District has a very full plate and their hands are tied to a

If at anytime the residents within the block where the attack occurred were to
see the dog and or persons involved in this matter to call 911 as well as my
office ASAP, my office is approx 4 minutes away from the location in question.
I am willing to provide any assistance necessary to control this matter. I have

I received this on the Village Parents listserve, but I haven't (yet) received
it on the chat and discussion listserves so I wanted to make sure the follow-up
got to you all as well. Multiple e-mails in change below:

As of 6 PM, Major Buzzuro of the Northern District noted the incident is being
actively reviewed by the evening shift's supervisors to determine the
appropriateness of it's response, as well as to ensure that any enforcement
action that may be applicable is properly exercised.

The CVCA's Safety committee chair has requested we be kept in the loop as to
any developments.

CVCA's grave concern about the issue. She also followed up personally early
the next morning copying Hon MaryPat Clarke, Hon Bernard Yound, the CVCABD's ED

Please also note that as of an hour ago there was a police care with Officer

All - I have asked Officer Doug Gibson and Officer Jon Walter to look in to
this situation. It is frightening that the fog's owner appears to have
encouraged the attack.

Officers Gibson and Walter are assigned to the Northern District and do a
marvelous job in assisting C V with matters just like this.

2009-11-18 Thread Lauren Redmond

I have experienced an annoying delay as well. I have set my personal settings
to have a daily digest of e-mails instead of one at a time, but it still sends
me multiple messages a day. Also, if everyone can please commit to deleting
all of the e-mails below the one they are writing, prior to sending their own
e-mail message, we can avoid receiving the same repeated message over and over
again.

Thanks.

2009-04-26 Thread Lauren Redmond

Judy,

There were 14 different households selling wares independently so I think it is
interesting that you found all of the prices high. I guess it is always the
choice of the buyer to try to negotiate down at a yard/sidewalk sale and the
choice of the seller to sell their items for a price that is acceptable and
fair to them.

Re: [Chat] Chat Digest, Vol 66, Issue 3

2008-12-05 Thread Lauren Redmond

I am so sad to hear about the robbery of Ms. Sue's store (I forget her
husband's name-- I think it is Mr. Lee). With all of the robberies in this
area, I was just wondering the other day if they were safe and hoping that they
wouldn't get held up. I hope my worrying didn't contribute to this on some
level! I am glad to hear they caught the guy (or at least someone they think
is the guy). I really hope a buzzer will help. I am not sure how they would
know when someone comes to the door if they are a customer or a thief, but at
least someone can't be hiding his face with a mask before coming in. Does
anyone know how much was stolen? I would love to do something to let them know
that they are valued and cared for by us. Maybe each of us going in and giving
them some money- a couple of dollars to 5 dollars or so. I could take up a
collection and give it to them in a card signed by anyone contributing, or we
could each just go in and hand them some money directly as a show of support.
What do you think?Lauren
