For about $40, you can pick up a USB external adapter that will allow you to connect an IDE or SATA drive to a computer via the USB ports. This would allow you to transfer data from the old hard drive to the new drive. While it is more cash initially, these devices are well worth the expense

When shutting down my computer last night I forgot to close the CD door. The computer shutdown but left the door open. When I tried to reboot it wouldn't start up. By pushing the door I managed to get the door closed. At this point (or before when the computer shut down) there was a sound

Are you sure it is the CD/DVD making the noise not the PS fan or CPU fan? Are you booting from a HDD or from the CD/DVD? If you normally boot from the HDD, try disconnecting the CD/DVD drive and rebooting. That will at least isolate that issue. New CD/DVD drives are cheap. Cheers, J.J. On
